Proposed Ohio law would allow international students at Gilmour to play sports
Kind of surprised this hasn't been brought up here. The OHSAA opposes: http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index..._internat.html
The gist of the law is that foreign students boarding at OHSAA member schools, basically Gilmour because other Ohio Prep schools with dorms like Western Reserve Academy are not OHSAA members, would be allowed to play sports all 4 years while traditional foreign exchange students living with a host family would still only have 1 year to participate in OHSAA sanctioned sports. Not a real big deal in football but could be a big deal in other sports like hockey if Gilmour shifts their Canadian born Prep team kids over to the OHSAA varsity program.

Typical Gilmour. Used it's high priced lawyers to cozy up to the legislators to force OHSAA to give in. If I was Gilmour I'd be careful not to make OHSAA mad. They have a good football team this year that should make the playoffs and potentially host a first round game. Unfortunately for Gilmour they have no lights so 7:00 Friday night games at home are out. OHSAA could move the game or force Gilmour to host the game at an off campus site. This is just one example of the games OHSAA can play if Gilmour angers them.

So basically, a kid living in Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, or Michigan can decide to go to an Ohio school in 9th grade but be ineligible under OHSAA rules at 100s of schools but our lovely legislature is going to step into a private organization at the behest of foreign students that attend one school.
If this happens, it's time to stop calling the OHSAA a private organization. They would simply be a government run entity.
Also got a kick out of this quote; "The current Ohio High School Athletic Association bylaw is designed to discriminate against private schools" from Gilmour's head of school Kathleen Kenny.

This seems legislation targeting schools, not private organization of schools. In what way is OHSAA required to count the wins or forced to permit schools using these students to be member?

I think this is a reasonable accommodation

I think that the Gilmour hockey program would be better off keeping their prep team in the Midwest Prep Hockey League and having their best players, regardless of where they're from, play on that team. And from the players' point of view, I'm not sure how why any Canadian would want to come all the way to Ohio to play in the OHSAA against lesser competition. The best hockey players aren't usually playing for their high school teams these days.

Gilmour though could prop up their soccer programs by this rule though. The girls are already very good, the boys are losing out in the "competition" against Hawken and U.S.

I'm not sure how you see it like that. I don't think Hawken and US are taking boys out of Gilmour's enrollment. All three schools have actually grown in enrollment in the last ten years. This is an interesting trend to me when you consider that the less expensive private schools in the area are actually seeing an enrollment decline.

Yet private schools winning a lot of the sports championships, and can recruit student-athletes out of county.

fbrox,
my commentary was SPORT SPECIFIC, not about the school as a whole.

To meet enrollment #s these schools are actively working the Catholic grade schools on the east side side and using their large endowments to match tuition to the Catholic High Schools.

If I read the OP correctly, the presence of Dorms makes all the difference. So all any school needs to do to get a license to recruit during open season on Internationals is build some Dorms. I expect to see a lot of Dorm construction at public and private schools alike. Plus lawsuits by Americans out of state and even distant Ohioans that they are being discriminated against. It will be like NCAA D1A in no time at all here.
The above ^ is a tongue in cheek post, but I do think the playing field should be the same for all schools in how they acquire their enrollments and who and how they are allowed to accept transfers and or recruit.
If Gilmour wants to play under the same rules as WRA and other prep schools they ought to leave OHSAA. Perhaps the old Interstate League for prep schools could (or should) be reformed and Gilmour should join up.

I understand your comment but think you missed a few things. First of all in football Gilmour beat both Hawken and US last fall. They also beat both in basketball and baseball. Seems to me the Lancers are doing just fine....

Understood and in total agreement. I don't think this is a good long term strategic plan as the endowment fund will drop, albeit potentially long term as opposed to short term. Gilmour has always had something of an identity crisis. Are they going to play the elite private independent card? Or are they going to be a small selective catholic school? The two labels or brands do not necessarily fit together. At $ 25,000 per year a better alternative is Ignatius and St. Eds. Both schools provide a strong educational system and unique campus activity options along with strong alumni network bases. I'm not sure Gilmour and Hawken can maintain their model 20 years down the road as the population and wealth bases leave northeast Ohio.
