NCAA Champs from the Big10 - TOO MANY

In 2015, 4/10 NCAA champs were from the Big10.

In 2016, 5/10 NCAA champs were from the Big10.

In 2017, 7/10 NCAA champions were from the Big10.
The three outliers were Cruz (Lehigh), Heil (OKst), and Cox (Mizz)

Based on this season’s performance, it’s looking like a whopping 8/10 NCAA champs this March may come from the Big10, with 133 and 141 being the two outliers with Gross (SDSU) and Meredith (Wyo) being the favorites at those weights.

This weekend will definitely be one of the better Big10 tournaments in recent years. Ohio state is back on their home turf and can hopefully avenge some of those toss-up losses they had on the road in February in MI and PA.

Have we ever seen an NCAA tournament with all 10 champions coming from one conference?

I think it very realistically COULD be 6/10 this year.

Based off of rankings, I’m going with a likely 8/10 champs from the Big10. I don’t see Cruz rising to the top over Lee, Tomasello, and Suriano. If anything, Valencia winning 174 over Hall + Jordan would bring that number to 7/10 champs unless we see a decent upset elsewhere.

125 - tOSU/PSU/IOWA
133 - SDSU
141 - Wyo/Corn/Okst
149 - PSU
157 - PSU/Iowa
165 - ILL/PSU/Iowa
174 - PSU/tOSU/ASU
184 - PSU/tOSU
197 - tOSU/PSU
285 - UM/tOSU

I don't recall the numbers, but I once looked at the number of AA's coming from the Big10. Even though the Big10 has (by far) the most qualifiers to the NCAA tournament, it could be argued that they are under-represented. The numbers are definitely more skewed as you look only at champs (the subject of this thread) and finalists.

It's one tough conference, that's for sure.

Okay, we're getting ahead of ourselves. 133 is Gross' weight, 141 has Yianni/Eierman/Meredith, 174 has Zahid, and the best wrestler at 197 is Ben Darmstadt. This doesn't include Cruz at 125 or any of those guys at 157 is Nolf is less than 100% (Hidlay/Lavallee).

This may be 3yr old baggage, but I remember seeing Moore tech-pin Darmstadt in the finals of Bill Dies in 2015. Moore has improved significantly since drilling with Snyder. Darmstadt has also, and he has an earlier win over Rasheed, and a win against one of the ACC studs, but I think his schedule and conference is far easier than Moore’s. I’d be surprised to see Darmstadt take 197 away from Moore.

174 is a tossup. I’d say 50-50 Zahid/Hall. Bo could also mean business his last NCAA tournament.

Really the only two weights that are a far reach for a Big10 champ are 133 and 141, looking like they’re going to Big12 guys.

I wouldn't count McKenna out at 141. He looked great vs Jack. The problem with this weight is that there about seven guys who could win it all with a good tournament.

The fact that Darmstadt is in this conversation speaks volumes for the kid.
