If it is about the same difference? Then how many freshman state champs have there been at 113? And, how many freshman state champs has there been above at 170 or above?

That's a fair question, but I think that the majority of upper weights are a bit hampered by football, and therefore not able to "master their craft" as well as lighter kids maybe not going out for football. Which would give them an advantage to lessen the gap? When you ask the age old question strength vs technique I believe the answer is the latter. But I'm merely sticking up for the light guys . I certianly could be wrong

[QUOTE=Lambeau Fields;6913307]But speed ("quickness" really) changes much less between age 15 and 18 than strength does. Athletes can easily double their strength in 4 years, they can't halve their speed. Most won't even improve their quickness by even 10%.

I think it has far more to do with body development. Larger bodies take longer to develop. That is why guys like Fickell or Vough are such rarities and why the upper weights are dominated by upper classman.[/QUOTE

i would have to disagree with your first paragraph because it seems like you are making speed quickness and I mean speed as mental speed. as in one move to another, chain wrestling, speed of the match. Not necessarily how fast a 113 can get to a leg, I mean Scrambling, endurance, Fast paced action. These things are in my opinion are harder to prepare for than someone being strong, at that rate I think every weight class has strong kids,

However your second paragraph makes a good argument in that the development time is longer. I will agree with that whole heartedly. But to go off on a diff tangent like I said in a post above. If these guys were focusing on just lifting for wrestling and training year round instead of playing other sports (football because of size) the difference wouldn't be that great imo. See for example the upperweoghts on the world team. They don't have the issues I think we're talking about as freshmen

Thank you for your contribution. Any sincere input is valid. If you have a genuine love for wrestling we are on the same side.

superplex21 gets an Aplus. Not only gave the answer I was looking for but sent a visual. If I knew him I would buy him lunch.

Not an Ohio kid, but Braxton Amos from WV is one of those bigger kids that could have won states as a freshman. Look what he did at Super32 as a sophmore.

Great point. There was also once an upper weight 4-timer from Kentucky. The name escapes me at the moment.

He was probably a true freshman in the 7th grade though....

Gable Steveson is gonna be a 4xer in Minnesota this year, with a runner up finish in his 8th grade year. That's about as good as it gets

Gable Stevenson is on another level. He is already beating quality college hvw's.. Minnesota is really loading up right now and should be powerful in a few years.

He just dismantles people. I've never seen him in a close match.
Same in FS. Dominating.

Maybe this is for a different / new thread ... How long will it be before Gable S. might compete for a spot on the Senior team (I mean the # 1 spot)? Could he go with large / strong / mature men like Gwiz and Medberry? Is he a Kyle Snyder in the making?

The talent is there, but I am not sure if the size is. I have not seen him in person in a year or two, but he was not the tallest, I think Gwiz is significantly bigger and just as a agile.

He's not going to be a huge monster cutting to make 285 like a Kole Conrad or Adam Coon, but he's already up to about 250 and has to be at least 6'1 or so. Size isn't going to hold him back imo, but maybe it isn't a plus.
