OHSAA survey sent out today

AD's were emailed a link to participate in a survey regarding the team dual state tournament.

Check with your AD if you have yet to see this come in your email. Below are the questions on the survey.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Dual Team Wrestling Tournament format was a major point of discussion at the annual meeting between the OHSAA Wrestling Administrators and the Wrestling Coaches Association. There were several proposed changes that came out of this meeting.

We propose to eliminate the two Wednesday Regional Qualifying rounds and have Regional tournaments at 24 sites on a weekend day.

This would require 24 sites that can accommodate 4 mats. Wrestling would begin at 10 am and conclude around 6 pm. There would be 16-20 teams at each site.

This format creates a better opportunity for financial success by having more teams at a site. This also eliminates late night mid-week travel. This is also less taxing on wrestlers who had to make weight twice in the middle of the week in the current format.

The biggest challenge is conducting this tournament in the middle of the wrestling season. We hope to gather some data to meet this challenge. Please answer the following questions.

1. OHSAA School ID

2. School Name

3. Your Name

4. Your Email Address

5. Your Title (Head Coach, Athletic Administrator)

6. Will you participate if the Regionals are held on Saturday, February 3?

Yes
No

7. Will you participate if the Regionals are held on Sunday, February 4?

Yes
No

8. Do you have a facility that can accommodate 4 mats?

Yes
No

9. Would you host if the Regionals were on Saturday, February 3?

Yes
No

10. Would you host if the Regionals were on Sunday, February 4?
Yes
No

The proposal reads that your entire Region would compete together for a 1-day dual tournament (bracket style).

The "24" refers to 8 regions per division for all 3 divisions.

Thoughts?

If it happens on that weekend, then there's no doubt. Could affect other conference tournaments (I know GMC is earlier than most) and will make scheduling even harder for some.

Yea, I think that is the only downfall of the proposal is how to make it work across the state with the various conference tournaments.

If this change were to happen, it shouldn't until the 2018-19 season, in my opinion. Most coaches have their schedules complete for next season. Likewise, tournament directors are planning a year out. Way too late to be discussing this for next season.

The D3 coaches that attend the LCC D3 tournament will definitely have an opinion.

A lot of tournaments that final weekend in January may have to move, I know of a few that are already considering it.

The OCC league in central Ohio has twice tried (mid 90's and mid 2000's) a dual meet format because coaches wanted to cut down on travel and thought more people would show up for a tournament. Both times it only lasted one year because the league loss money because attendance was higher with the duals.

I think the playoffs should consider different changes:
1) wrestling should advocate to get the dual meet playoffs scheduled for Friday nights.
2) consider scheduling a location in December rather than highest seed (I know people want the home advantage but even as a fan - the seeding, brackets, and host location can be difficult to follow because they occur quickly).
3) consider only top four in each sub-region (I know the 5 seed frequently beat the 4 seed and Sycamore had a great win over #1 but otherwise the others are not even in contention). Some will not like the loss of the possibilities of an upset but this is similar to Indiana refusing to split divisions because of Hoosiers occurring but the problem was the small school never again made a similar run to a championship. The sub-region quarterfinals and finals should be on one Friday night and then have the region Finals the next Friday night wit that being the only meet.

This eliminates travel during the week for students, parents, and fans that probably have school/work, the Friday night encourages more fans or students to show up, and the predetermined location allows fans to circle the date rather than check the weekend before the meet because many just lose track of the days.
