If they can't advance next year in football and basketball then they need to re- think joining the IVC as they will be loaded in both sports.
The IVC schedule needs to be looked at, need to be able to play more non conference games that would help get ready for the post season. Stop these cross over games. I sure would like to see Dover D2 in basketball, Bob V. would ALWAYS be a threat to make it to the regionals.

The crossover games serve two purposes, allow the AD's to have a simpler scheduling option & they are set to make sure (or attempt to make sure) that the "big school division" winners/leaders have a better record (& a head to head win) over the "small school division", pretty sad.

The other post, if IV can't advance in football or basketball next year they should leave, the schedule probably inflates their W/L record but I don't think they underachieved in the postseason in either sport.

Rebs if IV was D3, they'd have a pretty good shot at regionals as well. We could say that about a lot of schools. Unfortunately I don't see either school going down. If anything NP will probably join Dover and we'll continue to have less area schools make noise come tourney time. IMO no way should Dover or phila be D1 and IV shouldn't be D2.

100% agree. The divisions need to be eliminated and round-robin play needs to be instituted in all sports but football. In hoops that would mean 13 league games and 9 non-conferences games where teams could schedule up/down depending on the state of their program.

Unfortunately this league wasn't set up to benefit the kids and help make teams more successful. It was set up to make things easier for the ADs and for travel expenses. That's why you see so many crossovers. Look at Indian Valley's schedule.I think 18 of the 22 games were vs. IVC teams.

EDIT: Keeping divisions for middle school sports is reasonable. But varsity sports should not have divisions. Either you are in a league or you aren't and if you don't play ever you aren't really in the same league.

Five teams on Hiland schedule make it to the regionals,I guess in the long run beefing up your schedule, hopefully does help you in the long run

I just want to revisit the concept of round robin play in terms of travel. Let's take the most extreme case which is Buckeye Trail. Right now they have six IVC league road games in boys' hoops, girls' hoops, volleyball and baseball/sotball. Here is there travel for those six according to Mapqwest:

Ridgewood - 34.3 miles, 45 minutes
Garaway 53.1 miles, 56 minutes
Newcomerstown 30.4 miles, 36 minutes
Claymont 40.8 miles, 47 minutes
Indian Valley - 35.4 miles, 40 minutes
Hiland - 61.8 miles, 67 minutes

Total 255.8 miles - 291 minutes

So let's say the IVC eliminates divisions and institutes round robin play in those sports. You would have 13 league games (and a true league champion). One year Buckeye Trail would have six road trips and the next year seven. If you divide them up so the longest is one year and the second longest is the next you would get this:

Year One Home Games (adds 71.5 miles, 64 minutes)

East Canton- 71.7 miles, 71 minutes
Sandy Valley - 57.8 miles, 65 minutes
Tusky Valley - 54.4 miles, 60 minutes
Garaway - 53.1 miles, 56 minutes
Conotton Valley - 54.3 miles, 63 minutes
Indian Valley - 35.4 miles, 40 minutes

Total - 326.7 miles, 355 minutes

Year Two Home Games (adds 16.2 miles, 87 minutes)

Malvern - 70 miles, 85 minutes
Strasburg - 50.4 miles, 52 minutes
Hiland - 61.8 miles, 67 minutes
TCC - 45.1 miles, 46 minutes
Claymont - 40.8 miles, 47 minutes
Ridgewood - 34.3 miles, 45 minutes
Newcomerstown - 30.4 miles, 36 minutes

Total - 271 miles, 378 minutes

Indian Valley scheduled 2 cross over games against Tusky Valley this past year. TV won 4 games so that did not help IV prepare for D2 tournament.

"shouldn't" be D1 or D2?? If their enrollment has them in those divisions then that is where they belong, correct? The tournament isn't set up to help teams advance, it's set up to put schools of like-size competing against each other to get an eventual champion

Exactly! And it's not like you don't know Tusky Valley is going to be bad. When was the last time they were any good? Why would you schedule them other than the AD wants to do what is easiest?

"It's set up to put schools of like-size" IV is not like-size of phila and Dover is not like-size of Lake. But yes their enrollment falls into those categories. Doesn't mean those are divided up correctly. Competitive balance will help some, but I don't think it's the final answer.

But if Indian Valley goes to DIII they are nowhere near like-size to Hiland. Unless we create 50 divisions there are always going be schools that face larger schools in their division.

I wouldn't mind seeing 1-2 more divisions added. I agree someone is always going to be larger or smaller. Just would be nice to not see such a large gap in some divisions.

Definitely a great postseason for the IVC. Would be amazing to get two teams to Columbus.

Well, the IVC is only getting one to Columbus but Garaway and East Canton certainly represented the league really well in regional plays.

Says a lot about the league in terms of hoops that two teams who finished third in their division would be so competitive so deep into tourney play.

Hiland gets there based on a good draw in the Athens regional and the experience of the head coach in playing regional games. Remains to be seen how much that helps them at state, but Mark Schlabach has plenty of experience there as well. It would be a mistake to under-value that point. OTOH, talent and size are two things that are hard to coach against.
