Chaminade Julienne plans new $6 million athletic facility in downtown Dayton

Someone else may have posted this already, and I just missed it.

Chaminade Julienne plans new $6 million athletic facility in downtown Dayton

Updated Aug 19, 2015, 8:33pm EDT

In a surprise announcement, Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School told families and community leaders Wednesday night it will build a new $6 million athletic stadium downtown.

The downtown-based private school unveiled its plans for a multipurpose facility, to be called Roger Glass Stadium, to be developed at the corner of Longworth and Eaker streets, immediately west of the school's campus in the southwestern tip of the city's core.

"When we went through a master campus plan process in 2004, what we realized is we need to create more on-campus venues for student activity," Dan Meixner, president of CJ told me Wednesday. "We have a whole history of our students going to activities after school, but if it was outdoors, we had to find them a place in the broader Dayton region."

The new 2,150-seat stadium will have a 99,600-square-foot field which can host professional soccer games as well as football and lacrosse. Two ticket booth gateways will serve the stadium and the space will feature a plaza for community events. Additionally, an 80,600-square-foot practice field will be developed to the south of the stadium and along Franklin Street.

They should leave room for expansion. Getting it over 5000 seats could make it more likely to get used outside just school events

Looks like another place for the west-side thugs to destroy. CJ deserves a great atmosphere and facilities.
Good luck CJ on this development.

If they didn't upgrade their facilities, then I thought the school might close over the next decade. They have shrunk so much and are really hurting for money.

Seems like a great thing for them. Based on the $6 million price tag, I was hoping to see a larger capacity, but it is probably costly based on location.

What a waste. They had a top notch stadium they were playing at for pennies on the dollar at Wayne that seats over 7500. Travel? Hello, CJ is a private school so everyone still has to travel as they are from all over. No way will they be able to play the Alter/CJ game there.

Alter will triple the amount of CJ fans. When Alter is CJ, put Alter on the homeside because at least they'll fill the stands. The visitor side is like 3/4 rows. Marion Local will probably bring more than what those seats can hold. It's nice that CJ has their own field but the away side is pitiful

Looks like a nice stadium; 2000 on the home side and 400? for the visitors?

Great investment into the community that made them and into their school's history. Hope it goes well for them.

lol, well they're probably better at defending or agreeing with that remark than I am and I suppose we could get into semantics. From MY view, the community is the neighborhood. That hasn't moved. The money came from either people in that neighborhood or more impressively, those you say who "moved." Apparently, part of them "stayed."

We see all the time those people you refer to take their schools and businesses and churches with them. Here is one that decided to keep it where it was, where it made them who they are, where it is needed most so that it can help the next generation of that COMMUNITY be successful so I'm going to commend that.

I would expect for that price to see a much larger stadium.

I am looking forward to the opening football game at this new beautiful stadium. A soccer game on the 20th will be the first event in the stadium...it is a great investment in the future of CJ and for downtown Dayton...I live a few blocks away and have been amazed at CJ's transformation in the last few years. I also heard that this years freshman class is one of the largest in 10 years.

You would have to ask a CJ/Alter fan.... I would guess that Alter would bring over 2000 by themselves....

Alter didn't bring near 2,000 to McNick two years ago when both teams were 7-0. Now CJ is a lot closer so maybe thats the case.

That's because it's hard to drive an hour and 15 on an early saturday morning. Alter still had more fans at the game. One of my favorite games too with a 49-0 beating on McN.

The Alter/CJ game is always a big one. Problem has been both teams were playing games either at Wayne/Twood or Cville/Boro which adds another 20 minutes to the drive and the last 4 years the weather has been rainy and cold. I'm sure Alter/CJ will sell out but Alter will bring way more fans.

Its not that hard very little traffic. Leave at 11 am be there 45 minutes before KO. I knew someone would bring up the score...

True. I know for basketball games and soccer/baseball it would take a long drive down there but that's rush hour traffic though.

Right. Bad time of day for most sports. I've been frustrated many a time heading North on 75 for a soccer or baseball game @Alter, CJ and Fenwick in the late afternoon.
