I would say that the heavyweights will wrestle in opens to start the season and whoever does better at the opens will be the starter.

Doesn’t “redshirt” automatically apply if you don’t participate? If so coach controls who plays/wrestles. Now obviously athlete doesn’t have to stick around for 5th year but I think it is up to the coach.

The year Ohio State won the national title, Penn State did some "punting".

In an ideal world, Ohio State would "punt" this year and try to get Penn State next year when Nolf and Nickal are gone. However, you have human beings involved with feeling, emotions, and broad interests -- so it might not be realistic just to redshirt anyone who can this year.

Penn State is winning it all this year. Even with no Nevills at 285, Cassar has A-A potential in that weight class. Plus you have Nolf, Joseph, Hall, Rasheed, Nickal all in a row.

There is a massive difference between redshirting your freshman year as an 18-19 year old vs a college senior. As a freshman, the decision is driven by the coach as to whether you are ready or not. When you are a 22 year old senior all American, you decide whether you want to redshirt or not. The Coach is free to ask all he wants.

PSU punted in 2015 but not because of eventual NCAA champs tOSU. They didn't think they could beat IOWA, who was the consensus #1 throughout the season. Even after tOSU got "lucky" and tied IOWA in the B10s, nobody thought they had a chance in NCAAs. I'll never forget the team pictures of the B10s. IOWA looked like someone peed in their Wheaties and tOSU looked jubilant.

On this year, PSU starts as a strong favorite and would remain a favorite even w/o Nevills, but closer to the pack (tOSU, OKST and IOWA). Cassar could be a Kasper type of guy at 285 or he could be an also ran. The weight is weak, but Cassar is not strong on the mat. Not sure how he would do with 285 lbs on top of him. He is a good shooter, but shooting on a guy who weighs 285 is different than shooting on a guy who weighs 197.

PSU will probably win it all again this year, but I'm willing to let them and others wrestle a few matches before I crown them.

And I agree about tOSU punting this year. I would love to see it, but it doesn't seem to be in the cards for Ryan, other than perhaps Heinselman.

Realistically the Buckeyes only need two guys to redshirt to "take their best shot" during the opening where PSU loses their bonus point machines and Ohio State would still have an extremely competitive team. McKenna could redshirt while Hayes goes 141 and Martin could redshirt and Hoffman could go 184.

Sure but you don’t screw two kids by telling them to sit out a year. Neither will improve their shot at a national title by waiting until 2020 and you delay their aspirations at the next level. A coach would not last long doing that.

I must be way off because I thought Hayes was going to beat Micah. Pretty telling how much of a sacrifice he made to go up to 157 to make the team stronger and allow Hayes to stay at 149 with McKenna locking down 141. Could be a big year for Micah, but there are still some tough names that will be at 149 - but no Retherford or Sorensen.

also saw that Nickal is going up to 197. probably already reported here before, but I just saw that news. Gives Martin a legitimate shot at a 2nd national championship, but probably keeps Moore from getting his first. We'll know in about 6 months.
