Don Hertler Jr. Selected For Football Coaches Associationís Hall of Fame

This is from the Canton Repository -

Former Hoover High School football coach Don Hertler Jr. is part of the Ohio High School Football Coaches Associationís 50th Hall of Fame class, the organization announced Friday.

Hertler joins Bill Nees, Jerry Rutherford, Mike Fell, Dan Johnson and Dean Pees in the class, which will be inducted June 14 next year.

Known for his offensive mind, Hertler guided the Vikings to a 136-75 record in his 19 years as head coach in North Canton from 1996 to 2014. The Hoover alum and son of legendary head coach Don Hertler Sr. suffered one losing season in his first 14 years with the Vikings. Hoover won eight Federal League titles and qualified 12 times for the postseason under Hertler, highlighted by a state semifinal appearance in 2008.

Hertlerís 136 wins at Hoover represent the eighth most by a head coach in Stark County.

Hertler also spent eight years (1987-94) as head coach at Garaway, accumulating a 66-15 record and four Inter-Valley Conference titles. He owns a career record of 202-90 in his 27 seasons as a head coach.

Much deserved! Donnie had a great ability to put his players in the best possible position to succeed both individually and as a unit. Thought he was a heck of a play caller too!

The 136-75 doesn't do Hertler justice in terms of how dominant he was in the Fed. Half of those losses are from 2010-2014 when Hoover went down the tubes. Prior to that it was 8-2 or better year in and and year out. Truly some glory days over in North Canton. Congrats!

Donnie did a great job at Hoover. Raymo, you are correct about a great tutor. Don Hertler, Sr. was one of the finest high school coaches I ever saw. He built the Hoover program and his teams were always innovative and well-coached. Hoover always had a knack for winning close games and a lot of that can be attributed to the Hertlers and Ed Glass as well.

We were fortunate to have 3 HOF coaches lead the program over a 55 year period.
