Question Will attendance be better or worse this season at the state finals?

What say you?
Why do you think this?

Could be interesting .

Seems like all the talk about parking issues may hold down the attendance this year. I will go and put up with any difficulties parking to watch the team I support but will not attend any other games...but that has been true even when the game was played in Columbus. I still think that playing in a stadium that holds 100,000+ people when only 10-15,000 maximum fans show up for the big games takes away from the atmosphere. I don't really care where in the state the games are played....if the team I root for is playing I will be there. For the casual fan with no team affiliation it is a big issue. Centrally located, reasonable capacity, and available amenities seems to be the key to increase attendance.

Yeah parking will be the issue but I think the allure around new Benson Stadium will draw some of the fans that might not have attended otherwise.

Since STO no longer has the games, I'll continue to watch, tsun, Iowa, California, Texas, Colorado, Missouri, and other state high school play-offs.

Attendance will definitely be up over the last time it was at Stark County.

1. New stadium draws interest on its own.
2. Mostly new/infrequent teams combined with a couple that draw a big crowd (like Steubenville)

Parking can can a big downer. Individual ticket prices may deter some, but I think overall cost AND parking situation will deter some more seven-game fans from taking in the weekend. At least until how the club setup is handled.

Will attendance be more than last year in Columbus? That's the big question. It was trending downward already. I think it will be up a few thousand overall from the last year in Columbus.

The Thursday game will have the local bump thanks to Hoban, but exactly how many fans will Winton Woods bring? Plus, it looks like rain in the evening.

Up. Change of venue, good weather, good economy and most of all almost no private schools ( public community schools travel better).

My big concern for lower attendance going forward is video game streaming, I would rather watch at home.

I do not understand the concern over the attendance. What possible difference can it make? I mean the OHSAA is not going to go out of business. We will not stop having state tournaments if attendance drops to a certain level. The kids that win a title will not feel any less triumphant if a stadium is only partially full.

I'm not even sure what that means. What is unfriendly about it, and why does this keep people away? If you care enough about it you will go.

That and their biggest tournaments for financing is football and basketball. So, for a health standpoint, it is important to see how well the major tournaments do.

Eh... The OHSAA record book suggests otherwise. The nine highest attended state title games ever featured at least 1 private school...

OHSAA State Championship Game... Attendance Records
1. 1982 Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller 35, Massillon Washington 14
@ Ohio Stadium, Columbus... 31,409 (a.)
2. 1973 Youngstown Cardinal Mooney 14, Warren Western Reserve 3
@ Akron Rubber Bowl... 29,720
3. 1980 Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller 30, Massillon Washington 7
@ Nippert Stadium, Cincinnati... 22,751
4. 2002 Cincinnati Elder 21, Warren G. Harding 19
@ Canton Fawcett Stadium... 20,328
5. 1981 Canton McKinley 13, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller 0
@ Akron Rubber Bowl... 20,325
6. 2003 Cincinnati Elder 31, Lakewood St. Edward 7
@ Canton Fawcett Stadium... 19,816
7. 2005 Cincinnati St. Xavier 24, Massillon Washington 17
@ Canton Fawcett Stadium... 19,781
8. 2001 Cleveland St. Ignatius 37, Cincinnati St. Xavier 6
@ Canton Fawcett Stadium... 19,129
9. 1989 Cleveland St. Ignatius 34, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller 28
@ Ohio Stadium, Columbus... 17,667
10.1974 Warren Harding 41, Upper Arlington 8
@ Akron Rubber Bowl... 17,546

The '02 Elder-WGH game was played in a blizzard. In fact, it took us around 3 hours to get back to Warren, which is only about an hour trip in regular weather. I could only imagine how long it took to get back to Cincy. Unfortunately for me, Elder's trek back home was well worth it. They have great fans.

In the end I suspect tomorrow's numbers to be similar to their counterparts from last year. Tri-Valley will likely bring a huge crowd being their first trip ever I think and not a bad drive, but with osu playing and trotwood not bringing much it'll even out to about last years numvers. D4 probably a bit lower since Steuby is back for a 3rd year and CM got a long haul. D6 probably similar, maybe a bump for being a matchup between 2 schools that have collected championships recently

...all those people who showed up for the d5 game were treated to one hell of a game. Congrats to both schools for giving their very best!

the geographical location of the games themselves is not a factor in attendance. It never has been and never will be.

Is that true? Up about 6000 from last year even though tickets were 50% more? So ticket sales last year totaled about $555,000, this year $919,000? And here I thought Canton was a nuclear wasteland that no one could enter.

Looks like D4 Communities represented very well. I thought our crowd from Steubenville was amazing. For a little town of 17,000 they sure supported their Mighty Big Red in a Big Way. Community support....... one of the reasons for such great success.

If attendance is down, it's because of lack of public school support. It's time to put up or shut up publics.

I'm going and look forward to every year. Yes I like better when in canton since I live up this way. But, I went to cbus 2 years ago, and would have again last year if had been medically able.

I think it will be good with the weather. I really enjoyed our own experience with Loveland in the HOF stadium. I think the Stark county folks are proud to host and some locals attend. My wife and I hung out with locals at a bar and grill in Canton where everyone seemed to be planning to go and knew about the teams. I was impressed.
