Hilarious!

I can watch the games from home, so why buy a ticket, pay to park, and drive to Columbus?

IMO this is why attendance is down.

However, I do have a ticket for Game 6 and will make the trip tomorrow with a group from NEO.

I found some old programs:

In 1983 there were three classes, so nine games, with total attendance of 124,671. That's an average of 13,852. Official capacity was 13,276.

Total attendance in 1981 was 124,206, an average of 13,801.

Total attendance in 1976 was 122,914, an average of 13,657.

I went pretty much every year from the age of 9 or 10 until I left the state to go to grad school in '84, and I don't think I ever was able to buy a ticket from the box office. I learned to work the scalpers' market pretty young; it was the only way to get in if I couldn't get a ticket from one of the coaches at our school if they weren't there yet or had decided to take a game off and go get some pizza.

I can't speak for anyone but me, but I lost interest during the Mayo/Walker years and haven't been to a tournament since. Maybe it had always been going on and I didn't really have a sense of it until it was one neighborhood over from me, maybe it was something new, but the tournament now has no more meaning for me than an AAU tournament would. Deer Park's all-transfer squad against Harvest Prep or Africentric? Why would I drive to Columbus to watch that?

You sound like me in the mid 50s. I had almost forgotten about scalpers. Those were good times. $2 for a ticket. Check stubs on the floor so you had a leg up for the championship game. Not too clear at this late date on how it worked, but if I recall correctly a ticket stub from a winner in the semis got you first dibs for a finals ticket. Something of that nature.

Still does....if you have a ticket from the school that wins a semi, you can get a ticket right after the game in the school section. Not a big deal now, plenty of seats....but back in the day if you happened to find one of those stamped tickets it got you a ticket at face value for the final at least

Vast majority of people in Ohio do not have Time Warner cable, thus can not watch the games on TV at all. I don't think "TV" is much of a factor.

For me the quality of play has been declining in the state for the last 10 years or so and that is why I have lost some interest. In addition some of the decisions by OHSAA and/or the Schott on how they manage the game day experience (parking, tickets, etc...) has also been a factor in me not enjoying the experience as much.

Closed enrollment. They claim they all made bona-fide moves or are homeless, but all but three players (who seldom play) were elsewhere two years ago.

Check out the "CHL Basketball" thread sometime, if you're curious. I've never seen anything quite like it. (The situation, I mean...but now that I think about it, the thread too.) That it would happen at Deer Park, of all places, is a real headscratcher.

I have very fond memories of '86 when they did. Drove from Chicago Friday night and got to see all three championship games. Wasn't St. John's but the atmosphere was a lot better than Schottenstein.

Which may have as much to do with changing times as the venue.

Anyone able to find the attendance for the Trotwood/Meadowbrook game? The OHSAA does not have it listed yet for this game.

I hate to do this again, but does anyone have the attendance for the StV/Lexington game? I looked at both places and neither included the attendance yet.

Hiland's girls coach Dave Schlabach who is as good as they get, tweeted today that the OHSAA runs the best AAU tournament in the Country.

Very interesting to see high level coaches openly admit how terrible the product is.

So much for #RespectTheGame... guy has how many wins? How many state titles? And he's complaining that the event (state basketball tournament) he has great success in is "an AAU tournament?" That is an unbelievably tacky thing to write on a public platform. Be above it.

Don't think they have any beef with the product.

The beef is with the "recruiting schools." Now that most everybody has open enrollment (around cities) the publics (around cities) are as bad as the privates.

You either choose to get in that game...or accept that you'll likely never make a run. Deer Park chose to hire Gentry for a reason. And there is likely no chance they regret it.

I wouldn't say "didn't bother me" but it was NCH that pushed me over the edge. It's probably partly because LeBron was such a once-a-lifetime phenomenon that it didn't feel like a trend yet and partly because NCH was next door.
