Celina Fans

How will Jerry Harris be remembered by the Celina faithful. I played for Coach Harris during his first year at Steubenville.

With Coach Harris it is a mixed bag.

If he is introduced before a crowd when honoring him or a successful team of his at Celina, the ovation is pretty good. But ask individuals what they think of Jerry Harris and you will get responses all over the spectrum.

What is interesting is that among his former players you will hear things like "great football coach, but I really did not like him much". My brother played for Harris and that was his response. Same for a co-worker of mine.

So from a results standpoint - as a football coach - he gets respect. As a person, not so much.

I don't know him personally so I have no opinion but my sense is that he coaching style is why people tended not to like him much. My guess is that away from the field, he is probably as likeable as anyone. Having coached in Lima, Steubenville and Celina, he has retired in Celina. So he must be well enough liked here to stick around.

What do folks at Steubenville think of him?

They don't really say much. A .500 record over a three stretch doesn't endear you to anyone in Steubenville. He was rough on me but I really didn't mind. He was a tough hard nosed kind of guy and he was young he'll that was almost 40 years ago. I honestly don't think he was ready or prepared for the expectations that he faced. His 2 year. Of the 3 he had a pretty nice team. Bad first year, pretty good second year and bad third year. The coach right before Jerry also posted a .500 record and the natives were getting very restless. The feeling was we needed a a Steubenville guy and that turned out to be true. Coach Hedmond took over for two years, earned 2 playoff births, steubenvilles first, and then turned it over to Reno and here we are 34 years later closing in on 400 wins 9 championship game appearances including the last 2 and 3 titles. The Steubenville guy got the job done.

He did take Celina to their only championship game, a loss to Tom Tupa's brecksville bees.

He returned to coach Celina many years after that to little success. Not sure if they were desperate or what in bringing him back but he was respected enough to get the chance to beingmthe back to glory.

There was a controversial situation. Someone else can chime in but from what I redalll........he told the team they were not allowed to be an escort on homecoming ceremonies but one kid thought it would be cute to disobey him and did so anyways and he got benched or suspended for the game. His mommy made a huge deal avou It and attempted to bring hell down on Coach Harris. I think st that point he realized st that point that things had changed.I cannot recall exactly the rest but he resigned at some point

If memory serves; Harris second stint at CHS was due to loss of previous coach at a point too close to start of the season to hire someone else.

The controversial situation arose from a change in the dynamic of the players and their parents. They wanted a nice guy, not a hard nosed guy like Crimson and Black said. Players did not respect him because the parents didn't either and had no problem with their boys acting like a bunch of babies.

Wish that parents today would just let coaches coach and keep their opinions to themselves. But sadly, we are seeing the rise of the snowflake generation..

Want to say he was also at Lima Senior in the 70s? Not sure of the exact years.

He came to Steubenville from Lima Sr for 1978 season. His last season at Lima would have been 1977.

True. He had a number of other stops as well. A fantastic coach and was an even better man.
