Marc Pendleton from the Dayton Daily News has been releasing a top 7 all-time player list for various schools in the area, along with some honorable mentions. Interesting topic for the summer. Thoughts?

Are there any keys players on those lists that are surprising or someone they left out? I'm sure some guys from the 1970s and prior may be forgotten. Schools such as Centerville and Alter should be really fun to discuss because of the amount of talented DI studs they have produced over the years.

Tim McVay (Alter '74)/Indiana was a pretty glaring omission on Alter's Honorable Mention list, IMO, but overall Alter's Top 7 looked pretty solid. Another possible seventies-era omission was another Thuney (Mark, maybe? Class of '76?) that went to Illinois. A couple of Big Ten players.

How about Bob Vari? Played both football and basketball at Louisville. There were a lot of studs in the first 10 years of Alter football.

IMO the biggest omission on the ST. Henry list was Kevin ( believe that was his 1st name ) Niekamp nick name " Big Red " . If it wasn't for a knee injury might have been right up their with Hartings, Lachey, and Hoying as the top football players from St. Henry all-time. He was that good. Believe he had a football scholarship to OSU but could not play because of his knees.

Happy with 6 of the 7 on coldwater. Klenke, either Geier kid, Tony harlamert, Franzer, Lefeld, and if I think a little more....deserve it over one of those who made the coldwater top 7

Centerville

Just my opinion for what its worth. (which isn't much)

Top 7 isn't a bad list. But Nugent doesn't belong on it. He made his name at Ohio State and in the Pro's. He was a solid Centerville Elk but did not earn a top 7 of all time ranking. I would replace him with Bertram, Cravens, Repogle, Elcess, or Thomas.

Honorable mentions field has some issues. Harrison has no business being on the list. He put up some good stats but I consider him a rent-a-player and not an Elk. Odenigbo over-ran every snap. He may have been successful in college but wasn't that dominant while an Elk. Same goes for Johnson. Tons of talent but it never really panned out while he was an Elk. He obviously found greater success at the college and pro levels.

Haha... rent-a-player... Not a true Elk. Just a kid who transferred back to Centerville because CJ was awful and couldn't beat anyone in the GCL that mattered.

Ok does Marc Pendleton plan on doing this for every area school? If not why is Beavercreek's top 7 listed? They haven't done anything significant in athletics specifically in football. Great concept especially if he plans on having lists for every area school leading to the start of football season and it will help save the paper.

E83,

Agree with your points in general. Here's the thing with all of these players. Many guys who went on to star in college, or even the pros, weren't necessarily the greatest players in H.S. Most were, but not all. Andy Harmon and Dave Morrill got to the NFL, but neither were as good or dominant in H.S. as Dave Brown, Doug Bradley, Terry Bach, or Greg Miller. What happens is many great H.S. players are great because they matured earlier than others. Alot of college stars never quite hit their stride until college, or after.

Wayne is missing Alexander Lammers DL, Jerry Hurd OL and Eric Nauls RB from the 70's.
Alter is missing Craig Valentine DL and Dave Seamans RB, also from the 70's.
Centerville is missing Brad Gunlock OL, Greg Miller DL and Doug Bradley DL. Glad they threw in Dave Preston though. Best combination of speed, skill & power Centerville ever had at RB, at least while in H.S.
Great to see Marc Pendleton doing these lists...fun reading!

Let me give you Troy's before it's out.

Ryan Brewer
Bob Ferguson
Gordon Bell
Tommy Myers
Tommy Vaughn
Kris Dielman
7 could be a toss up. Probably someone from the 70s or 90s I'd assume.

Uh, Bob Ferguson was a once in a 40 year player. Definitely the best player ever at Troy.

If you were an 8th grader in Dayton in 1971...Gordon Bell was OJ Simpson...Kids used to line up after Troy games to get autographs!

Two obvious choices for Piqua have to be Quinn Pitcock and Brandon Saine.

They had some great teams in the late 90s/early 2000s

I played against Ryan Brewer's brother and thought he was a load to bring down.

Was waiting for Mike Delwiche. I seen him in the honorable mention. I just remember him and I'm going to murder this name but was his name Gian Julio. The other running back. That's all your heard being from Sidney was Delwiche and Julio.

Also, Troy fans or anyone was that the year Moeller beat Troy at welcome staduim in the playoffs. I maybe wrong because I was young but I remember Troy running up and down the field on Moeller only to get inside the 20 and then went away from what they were running and got shut down.

The biggest omission from the top seven for Beavercreek and probably should have been listed #1 is Cris Shale, the Beavers only College Division 1 AP All American. He also was a Ray Guy Award winner and 11th round draft pick for the Redskins in 1991. Being from Beavercreek and knowing that Pendleton graduated from there I wasn't surprised to see that he named a few of his buddy's in the top 7. There were a couple guys that got scholarships to James Madison and Penn State which is great but they rode the bench.... Tom Wroblewski(Vanderbilt) and Mark Rhea(Toledo) should have been top 7. Was surprised to see that Brian Byars who at one time held the WOL career rushing record and led the WOL in rushing 2 seasons in a row was not even an honorable mention.

Was also surprised that Mangold wasn't number 1 on Alter's list being that he was a 4 year starter at OSU and a 7 or 8 time all pro center, probably the best center since Mike Webster.

It seems to me that Pendleton is inconsistent about what he is basing these lists on. Is it what they achieved while they were in school or while they were in college or pros? To me it seems based on preference. He probably should have left the subject alone.
