Mentor Cardinals Football 2017
I'm liking the growing relationship with Massillon Jackson. Great public sports program in a nice community. Beautiful school too.
Scrimmaging them in football will be nice. Will visit that field for the first time after I saw the basketball team play there for the first time last year
I don't remember playing Erie Cathedral Prep in anything. Just Erie McDowell in football

Jackson has a nice football stadium, too. Even more so since they installed artificial turf a few years ago. The stadium is behind the middle school on Mudbrook Road, not by the high school. It's maybe a half-mile north of the high school. It's just off 241; in fact, if you're driving south on 241, you can see the stadium off to your right before you get there. There's a Swenson's drive-in at 241 and Mudbrook.

Here's what I'm hearing on offense. Of course it's early, subject to change, and most of this is based on returnees from last year. I'll try to find out more about the defense soon:
OL - Ryan Jacoby (Jr.)
OL - Tyler Churney (Sr.)
OL - Tyler Schonauer (Sr.)
OL - John Kidner (Sr.)
OL - Charlie Call (Sr.)
QB - Tadas Tatarunas (Sr.)
RB - Chris Edmonds (Sr.)
WR - Logan Shea (Sr.)
WR - Steve Baird (Sr.)
WR - Derek Kleinhenz (Sr.)
WR - Matt Hartman (Sr.)....if healthy, this is a great addition. Played as a Freshman (probably the 2nd/3rd best player on the team) and then battled injuries since. Didn't play his Soph. or Junior years. Word is he looks healthy so far.

I do hope the WRs continue to grow. There is a lot of potential there. Look forward to hearing about the defense

[QUOTE=EaglePride01;6773765]Your vitriolic responses give a different impression. And I'm completely satisfied with how my alma mater conducts its business these days. So is the OHSAA.
My friend at work had a nephew that went to St. Edward. He took a "college algebra" class with mostly football and basketball players. At St. Edward, the class was so watered-down for the athletes that he couldn't pass a basic algebra class at Ohio State. This doesn't seem to be a good way to "conduct business".

Really looking forward to opening up the season with welcoming the Cards to the friendly confines of PBTS. Hopefully we can muster a better performance, especially defensively and make this year's game a bit more interesting. Heck of a way to break in the new DC! Go Tigers!

I don't believe that for a second.
Can't believe this is first time I noticed this thread. Wow, MG2002 is off the chain.

Well, hold on a minute. My neighbor worked for a guy who used to live a couple doors down from the grandparents of a former Eagle...had a very similar story. But it was about a kid who transferred in from Mentor so that could explain the academic struggles.

Great and fun game to play. Hope it continues. Good for both schools to schedule it. There is respect between them

Simply not true. No evidence that suggests St. Edward runs a "dirty" program. Because they do not.

No complaints from St. Edward side about filling their schedule. It gets done and it's usually a pretty good one. No evidence Ignatius fills their schedule with any less effort.

I'm always amazed at the selective hearing fans have when they complain about other fans. You need to look in a mirror. Any why be so mean? Do you actually automatically dislike anyone who ever attended or rooted for St. Edward?

Great. You can leave the thread now. I'm not arguing points I already made
If you don't like it , tough ...but all the reasons I said have backup
Ps: On the schedule stuff you guys were 4-6 when Mentor beat you in the home and home. Hard fought game and 4 win team credit
And there are reasons Eds isn't scheduled. It isn't competition. Mentor had Ignatius and X last year. The 2 state finalists

Just a note on math at Ed's. My son's senior year 31 kids took AP BC Calc. They earned 28 5's ( highest score you can get on a AP test) and 3 4's. One of the kids got his undergraduate and masters in math from an Ivy League school in 4 years.
Math at Ed's is good and has always been good. Not everyone has the knack for it or likes it. A deeper dive into this topic is how prepared are the kids coming in from Jr. High. This is a point that all schools public and private have to contend with today.
See we reached common ground.

Can't recruit youth camps and up and draw from 5-7 counties like you guys. So gotta plug the one school district talent in somewhere and often have a few holes elsewhere
So whenever you come on mentorftball, it will be interesting to see

Just saw Kade McClure with the 4th overall pick from Louisville. He's been the top starter after McKay for Louisville.
They just got to the college World Series (final 8) and McClure won the first game of the Kentucky series to get there
Best of luck to them unless they play Florida State in the finals
Kade should be drafted tomorrow so that will be exciting following Trubisky to the Bears in April

I'm a little thin on the D, my guess is you may see more underclassmen than on the O.....kids stepping up from last year's JV team. Here's who I'm fairly certain on at this point:
DE - Noah Potter (Jr. 6'6" 240)
LB - James Pedley (Jr....returning starter)
CB - Will LaGanke (Sr.)
CB/S - Mike Warren (Sr.)
S - Mike Brey (Sr.)
DL/LB - Dominic Shelley (Sr.)

Last year was a rarity - a non-playoff season. The program is unfortunately in a down cycle. I hope this year snaps them out of a little funk. Defense will need to wake up. Offense needs to be reminiscent of year's past. I'm not looking for a 2011 or 2012 offense, but at least be close to the level of 2014.
Tatarunas will be a three-year starter. Good for him that he has hopes to have his college education paid for at the next level (DII, FCS, or maybe mid-major if he really shines). He has the size, strength, and potential to be crafted into some kind of a college QB. But with the way Mentor runs their offense, it is hard to ignore that he is a square peg trying to fit in a round hole. It's strange to me that Tatarunas can look pretty athletic and mobile on the basketball court playing against great athletes from Solon, Shaker, St Eds, Cornerstone, etc. On the football field, he has trouble standing out athletically as he runs away from 270-pound defensive lineman.
The key is to get the 7 wins necessary to make the playoffs. Going 2-1 in non-conference will take some of the pressure off during the GCC. But that won't be an easy task. Ignatius is a juggernaut. Massillon and Glenville are more winnable, but not if Mentor plays like they did in big games last year.
The player I'm most excited to see growth this year is Potter. He is on OSU's radar. His summer camp schedule and his fall season will be a great place for him to show his skills, size, and athletic ability.

I agree math isn't for everyone and it's usually more on the Jr. high than the high school. However, Ed's just pulled a kid 45 minutes east of the school. If there's an entrance exam this kid didn't take it. He also struggled with grades so much so that he could not play certain sports in middle school. Outstanding talent no doubt.
Is this a case of the Jr. high school's not getting him ready? Or Ed's just grabbing an athlete? How many kids like him are there compared to the Ivy league kid? Which is the outlier? I guess we find out in 4 years.

I see that Massillon Perry move up to Division I Region 1 this year because of the competitive balance rule. Should Mentor make the playoffs, it would be cool to play teams other than our local ones.

Tanski was the most accurate QB I ever saw in high school. There were a couple games where Mentor really whipped St. Ignatius because of Bart's accuracy on the deep pass.
