Interesting. 68 wins last year. Subtract Cozart and his very good year. Add Pennington and 2 journeyman middle relievers. Add 1 season's worth of experience to the young players.

Does that all add up to 73.5? Maybe, if the extra seasoning of the pitchers really pays off, and Bailey is back to his pre-injury self, and Senzel is who we think he is. I'll sign up for 74...

Now, if Senzel is in fact the next Mike Trout, as many of you claim, then the Reds may win 90.

Zach Buchanan leaving the Enquirer

So in the past month or so the Enquirer has lost its top three sports beat reporters

Reds beat the Indians today 6-4. No surprise there.

Reds sign Ben Revere, for some reason. He's only going to make $1.5M so this makes Billy Hamilton totally expendable.

Looks like he's the 5th outfielder at best. No risk signing, since it's a minor league deal. Pretty decent insurance for injuries, pinchrunning, etc.

Yeah, it'd be great to get out from that contract.

Unusual - no 14Red posts in a while. Either you guys scared him off, or he is working on his resume to apply for a baseball reporter job at the Enquirer.

I'm back, was on vaca, so in essence you guys had a vacation from me.
I've been following the boys as much as possible and it seems like most of the young / veteran pitchers we are counting on have had good outings so far. Another positive is it does not appear there are any major injuries either. I'm anxious to get the season started!

Nobody has pitched more than 4 innings. In fact, nobody but Mahle and Stephens has pitched more than 2 innings. I'll wait for more than 1/3 of a game played to make any judgements on the pitching.

Sounds like the pitching will be a major strength this year. Thanks for the update 14red!

Oh, you guys missed me, you just will never admit it...

No, don't get me wrong at all. The next 3+ weeks are meaningless. Spring training stats mean nothing. I just want them to build up their arms, and not be injured when the season starts at the end of March.

The last thing I wanted to see was Homer take the ball his first outing and get shut down. Or Sal Romano, or Tyler Mahle.

And EP, for this team to get anywhere we want it to this season, the starting pitching is going to at least have to be mid level. The Reds starting pitching has been awful the past few seasons, the bullpen held on for awhile last year, but the lack of getting deep into games wore the bullpen out.

There's the astute insight that we have been missing!
- spring training stats are meaningless
- injuries to pitchers = bad
- pitching needs to be better than last year

Quality observations. The Enquirer has to hire you!

wolves, dealing with some of you knuckleheads, I feel like i need to paint a picture most of the time.

But you see, there are reasons for this. First of all, many of you think the Reds are awful and have been awful, fire the manager, fire the pitching coach, etc. BECAUSE of "injuries to pitchers=bad". YES, you have injuries to pitcher you are counting on and you will more than likely be bad!!! Some feel we should just bring up quality major league starters from Louisville when the need arises, doesn't work that way.

I'm very excited that Homer Bailey hasn't gotten injured after pitching 2 innings this spring. Expect him to be a Cy Young winner this year after this kind of start.

In all seriousness, I agree. For the Mariners' ball boy for all I care. But I can't imagine he has any trade value due to his crap health and his salary. I'm guessing the Reds will have to eat a lot of his salary. Hopefully, if they find a trade partner, it's only this season's salary they will have to eat.

Believe me, if Dick Williams could trade him for anything, he'd do it. It's not unprecidented. They gave Phillips to the Braves last year and paid 90% of his salary.

But he did make 17-18 starts last season and if you take out the worst 2-3 starts, he wasn't awful, and he finished fairly decent once he got his legs under him.
Look, the bar isn't high for Homer. If he can give us 170-200 innings, that's a major win for the club. Not worth $20 mill, but at least half of that.

There's nobody in baseball who's going to take on more than about 20% of Homer's contract when so many quality starters are still unsigned.

Phillips made $14M last year. Braves and Angels paid $1M of that, so about 7 percent and Reds paid 93%. Off to a good start

Bailey did in fact make 18 starts. He had seven starts where he gave up more than 5 runs and lasted more than 6 innings twice. Averaged 5IP/game and ERA+ of 68. But he did get better later in the year and is making $21M this season. That is definitely poor, but all in all a fairly accurate post by 14Red.

Perhaps he has finally discovered things like google and baseball reference. That, or Lance read those stats out over the air and 14Red copied them down real quick.
