Western Buckeye League 2018

I haven't seen a thread for the Western Buckeye League 2018 football season, not sure if there are many WBL folks around but thought I would create one to discuss each week of play this season.

How do folks think the WBL will shake out this year? Anything stand out from scrimmages?

For reference, last year's WBL standings:

1. St Marys Memorial - 10-2 (9-0)
2. Elida - 8-3 (7-2)
2. Celina - 7-3 (7-2)
4. Wapakoneta - 6-4 (6-3)
5. Kenton - 5-5 (5-4)
6. Van Wert - 5-5 (4-5)
7. Shawnee - 4-6 (3-6)
7. Ottawa-Glandorf - 3-7 (3-6)
9. Defiance - 1-9 (1-8)
10. Bath - 1-9 (0-9)

I believe your right not many at all w.b.l posters. I think st.marys celina and o.g should be at the top of the league, but kenton and shawnee should be right there as well. Especially shawnee with Jerry cooper at the helm. I don't believe anyone will be undefeated in league play. I'm going to say st.marys is the favorite until someone beats them. Excited for the season to start.

Week 1 is the only out of league game for the WBL. Could be a good indicator for some team's playoff runs. The WBL usually doesn't do too hot in Week 1, but i'm curious to see what will come of these match-ups.

Bath @ Allen East
Celina vs. Versailles
Defiance @ Napoleon
Elida @ Tiffin Columbian
Kenton vs. Coldwater
Ottawa-Glandorf vs. Eastwood
Shawnee @ Delphos Jefferson
St. Marys Memorial vs. Sidney
Van Wert vs. Bryan
Wapak @ Bellefontaine

I doubt we ever go 2 non conference games. St.marys and wapakoneta have to find openers next season, as sidney dropping st.marys and bellefontaine dropping wapak for there new league.

Pretty good Week 1 for the WBL going 7-3 overall. Biggest surprises, for me, are probably the Celina and Shawnee blowout scores in their wins. Also surprised how lopsided the Elida loss was. Otherwise, looks like O-G is back and business as usual for St. Marys and Wapak.

Week 1 Scores

Bath 14, Allen East 21
Celina 41, Versailles 12
Defiance 35, Napoleon 21
Elida 3, Tiffin Columbian 35
Kenton 27, Coldwater 52
Ottawa-Glandorf 21, Eastwood 19
Shawnee 49, Delphos Jefferson 0
St. Marys Memorial 35, Sidney 7
Van Wert 34, Bryan 7
Wapak 28, Bellefontaine 14

It will come down to the Battle of Grand Lake for the WBL title.
Kenton will be in third.....but could sneak up to second. They will be explosive on offense.

Shawnee...will take a little time for their new HOF potential coach gets a foothold on the program and takes them to an elite level.

It's still early in the season, but with a couple surprising halftime scores we might be seeing a clear top 2 in the WBL - and it's not the Battle of Grand Lake as a lot thought after week 1!

Week 2 Halftime Scores

St Marys Memorial 35
Ottawa-Glandorf 6

Kenton 35
Celina 0

Wapakoneta 28
Van Wert 12

Elida 25
Bath 7

Lima Shawnee 14
Defiance 7

Definitely surprised how lopsided the SM-OG and Kenton-Celina games were. OG isn't a team that really gets blown out like that it'll be interesting to see if they have another 3-7 type season ahead or if SM is really just that good. I suspect a bit of both, but probably more of the latter. After an opening week thrashing of Versailles, Celina struggled mightily as Kenton rebounded. SM and Kenton are the early favorites and clear top 2 at this point. Celina and OG certainly have enough time to get back in consideration as well. Far too early to count them out. Also, not sure what to make of Elida on this young season. They were routed in week 1 and then blew out a likely bad Bath team. Lastly, cool to see Defiance 2-0 as it's been a while.

Week 3 Games

Celina (1-1) @ Elida (1-1)
Kenton (1-1) @ Defiance (2-0)
Ottawa-Glandorf (1-1) @ Bath (0-2)
St Marys Memorial (2-0) @ Van Wert (1-1)
Wapak (2-0) @ Shawnee (1-1)

I wouldn’t say Kenton is clearly better than Wapak. I think they battle for 2nd place.

That offense is an absolute nightmare. Even more so since they've developed a passing game to compliment the Wing-T they run so well.

Agree with folks. SM is looking great. Kenton has been the next most impressive team to me, though, so I'm intrigued by the SM-Kenton matchup. Sure, Wapak is undefeated and a contender too. They just seem to have lost their magic post-Frye. One-dimensional team that can beat many WBL foes, but I don't know if they'll make playoff noise at that rate. I think they have 10 or 11 pass attempts on the entire season through 3 games? Not sure, might also be my bias, but I find SM, Kenton, and Celina to all have more dynamic offenses. I guess we'll find out more soon as Wapak will be traveling to Kenton on Friday for surely the game of the week in the WBL.

The SM/K will be for the league title. If it is played on a dry track then Kenton has a chance but if the weather doesn't cooperate SM will take it easily.

I was a bit disappointed in Celina vs Kenton in week 2 as I though the dawgs woulda put up a fight.

I too was a bit shocked at the week 2 result from Celina v Kenton. Then Celina turns around and blasts Elida last week. Peculiar. Yet, I believe the WBL is much stronger this year than in years past, overall. Even teams like Van Wert who seems to have a decent group of athletes, especially seniors, is getting beat up.

Very underrated conference here. A few upsets and teams battling every week. Well balanced and looks to be some fun football being played.

Watched the Wapak - Kenton replay. Wapak has a good defense but no passing attack on offense. Sharp for Kenton is a very good player, if Kenton had a decent o - line Sharp would be unstoppable.

I think Kenton beats St. Mary's this week. It'll be close, but I'm going with Kenton by a score.
