This is the team that St. Edward fans have been pointing to as state champs since their freshman year. The young Eagles defeated the young Wildcats 37-0. Interestingly, the two quarterbacks in that game were named Schurmur and Lerner, neither of whom is around anymore. Eagle fans will be disappointed if the game is not a rout.

Ignatius had a very difficult time stopping the run against St Xavier. I think we could see a healthy dose of Gest/Dowell.

I still think the Eagles are the most talented team in the state. Ignatius is pretty banged up right now so hopefully we can get healthy.

Should be a good game.

Iggy was supposed to be rebuilding last year - who won ? If Kyle is still coaching Iggy then I'm picking Wildcats.

This Ignatius senior class deserves a lot of credit for hanging in there. I wonder if anyone can post the scores (or at least the records) from their freshman and JV years? Going into this season, many of the "experts" that I knew were predicting 4-5 wins. Well, they've exceeded that and coulda/woulda/shoulda had 8 wins already (50-50 game with Mentor; Paramus debacle). And, lest people think this is primarily due to a strong junior class...well, they're getting help from the juniors (and sophomores), no doubt, but more than half the starters are seniors; pretty similar to most years.

Bottom line...these kids are playing important, meaningful games at the end of their senior year. Hats off to them. Many predicted they wouldn't get the chance.

Absolutely. They have played with heart and have been an excellent example to all of the following classes. Very few thought that this class would have a winning record, so kudos to the seniors!

I suspect this game will follow the recent trend of a close, low scoring affair with the winner scoring in the 20's. Kyle is 22-10-1 against the Eagles. St. Edward has only beaten the Wildcats by more than 10 points once during his tenure. The strength of the Ignatius fronts on both sides will keep the Cats more than in this game. St. Edward is rather easy to figure out offensively, unless they have been holding back the playbook all year for this game. If the Cats defense can keep the game within striking distance (which I believe they can), we may see their superior kicking game prove to be the deciding factor once again.

I expect to see Ignatius dial up the blitzes from all sides, although they may not need to go overboard if they can generate pressure with that front three. Kean has struggled without Stump as his safety valve, and none of the other receivers have really stepped up on a consistent basis. It's been boom or bust for this offense which relies on the big play. Eagles will need to give Gest or Dowell a lead blocker out of backfield if we want to spring them loose. On the other side, the St. Edward secondary has become very difficult to pass on deep. But they can be had on the short, underneath stuff as Elder showed. To date, that is the only offense to sustain multiple long drives on this defense. Ignatius' offense has a pretty complex route tree, and if that massive line can keep Grosel's shirt clean against an undersized Eagle front, they can dink and dunk their way down the field, perhaps hitting a few big plays if they catch the Eagle secondary start to cheat up.

Nicely done. Field position and special teams will have much to say about who is the victor on Saturday night.

Go Eagles!

Weather could be as low as 28 degrees Saturday night.

The 'Cats need to put pressure on Kean and force him to make quick decisions.

FYI: Per the Ignatius website, the Ignatius/Eds JV game has been moved from Saturday to Monday (at 6) due to Mr. Skerl's funeral mass.

I am glad St. Ignatius made this request and St. Edward agreed to the reschedule date... Mr. Skerl was a terrific educator and better human being.

I agree, its always nice to both schools help each other out when possible. I've always thought this is what makes the rivalry special is as much as both want to win in whatever competition they are in, mutual respect for the other side is always present. One example, at the soccer game last Saturday the Ignatius faithful sang their alma mater after a 3-0 victory. Their student section had crowded around the fence to be near the team and the field as many of the Ed's fans were trying to leave. The Eagle student section walked right by them without any incident, not many rivalries would be able to do that.

See you guys at Byers Saturday night. Be sure to wear your long-johns. Is Antonio's Pizza at Parmatown still open before/after the game?

Before the game, go to the "Tailcats" area - the tents are in the adjacent parking area to the southeast of Byers. The Alumni Association and parents have food and beverages available.

After the game, go to Antonio's for the pizza.

Every game, I've run across a bunch of the '69 guys at both

Based on the projections in the 'Region 1 - week 9' thread, it appears that the 2nd round is most likely.
First round is unlikely as the winner probably moves up to 3 and the loser could be in the 8-9-10 area.

First round rematch is statistically impossible. The winner will be no worse than top 5 seed. The loser will no lower than 8-11 seed.

The Holy War was originally scheduled for 7pm and most sites still show that time. St. Eds website says game has been rescheduled for 2pm. Yet, their webcast site has a 3:40pm broadcast starting time, which implies game will start at 4pm. Anyone know definitively what time Saturday's game is now scheduled to start?

Not sure where you're looking, but when I go to this page:
http://www.sehs.net/?page=SEHS_FBall_Home
it says the start time is 7 pm in three different places.

SIHS website, including Eddie Dwyer's Corner, give no indication of a time change.

My goof. Somehow, I was looking at a 2009 post on St. Eds website, that said the game was changed from 7pm to 2pm. But, the site still shows the broadcast is set to begin at 3:40pm.

https://sehs.site-ym.com/?sehs_football_broad

I'm assuming that is in error and that the game will begin at 7pm, as originally scheduled.

Per an email blast from Ignatius today:

SIBN will begin a LIVE audio-only broadcast for OH residents at 6:30 p.m.

Out-of-state visitors can see full audio and video on the SIBN. Ohio residents can watch the game LIVE on Time Warner Cable on channels 311 or 1311

Wonder if the sehs.net site will have to do the same, I assume due to the Time Warner broadcast?

I think it's hard to tell how a freshman class will perform in a couple of years, but this one is not a weak class at the very least. They went 10-0, beating Ed's and Moe, bested a 9th grade Mentor class that was highly regarded and gave Erie Prep it's only loss.
