Stieber vs McKenna - The Buckeye Battle

Who wins in the Buckeye Battle at Final X this week, Stieber vs McKenna? Before the Open I thought Stieber would TF his way to the Open finals and then beat McKenna in the finals, although in a close match. And I only thought it'd be close because they were practice partners and familiarity often closes the gap. Then Eierman happened. He takes out Stieber and then loses to McKenna in the finals. McKenna beat Eierman in the NCAAs, so this wasn't a shock. Stieber losing to Eierman was a shock. This did, however, raise my level of respect for McKenna as a world level competitor. He did win a U23 Bronze last year, so he was pretty accomplished. But not to the extent of Stieber, with a World Gold in his back pocket and many impressive wins on the international scene. Stieber got his revenge on Eierman in the WTTs to set up the Buckeye Battle. Who wins this one?

Stieber looks to be well passed his prime at this point, but I believe he will "big brother" McKenna 2 matches to none.

I'm not sure if Stieber is past his prime or not. He hasn't been consistently dominant, even shortly after winning his World Gold. The year he won his Gold was in an Olympic Year. This makes a difference, although not a huge difference. The World's best try to squeeze into Olympic weights. Guys that don't win that spot for their country will then go to the non Olympic weights. So, in many cases you aren't getting the best guy at that weight for many countries. Likely he was 2nd best at an Olympic weight and went up or down a weight as a consolation prize. Stieber met that criteria as he lost his bid for the Olympic weight 65kg and went down to 61kg. For countries with great depth that may not make a great deal of difference.

Speaking of depth, I only know of one country with great depth, Russia. USA has some good backups at some weights, such as 125kg, 57kg and 79kg. Although 79kg is the only weight we we're 2 or 3 deep as far as top 5 ranked guys (likely medalists) with #2 Dake, #3 Dieringer and #5 Valencia. Russia is 2 or 3 deep at 61kg (#1, #2 and #3 ranked guys), 65kg (#2 and #4), 70kg (#1, #2 and #5), 86kg (#3, #4 and #5) and 97kg (#2, #3 and #5). That's crazy deep. Our top guys can compete, but we have nowhere near the depth that they have.

So, McKenna finally got a vote in the poll. In contrast to our polls, the betting odds (BetDSI) see it as a pretty close match, having Stieber at -140 (bet $140 to win $100) and McKenna at +110 (bet $100 to win $110). Compare that to Dake vs Valencia with Dake at -350 (bet $350 to win $100) and Valencia at +270 (bet $100 to win $270). World rankings (Flo) have Stieber at #5 and McKenna UR, and Dake at #2 and Vaelncia #5. The betting odds are not in sync with the rankings. Our poll is in sync with the rankings and not the betting odds. I think there is a dose of bias in our polls, since Stieber is an Ohio boy and won 4 Ohio and NCAA titles. McKenna is a mere 2x AA and new to Ohio.

The match is today at 6:00 pm, and our poll is giving Stieber about a 90% chance over McKenna. As mentioned above, the betting line is a lot closer. Flo did a poll among their staff, as they do for all the matches, and have McKenna as favorite among six of their staff with four favoring Stieber.

Per Flo
65kg: Logan Stieber vs Joey McKenna
Willie: McKenna over Stieber, 2 matches to none
Nomad: McKenna over Stieber, 2 matches to none
Bratke: McKenna over Stieber, 2 matches to 1
Spey: Stieber over McKenna, 2 matches to 1
Pyles: McKenna over Stieber, 2 matches to 1
Nick V: McKenna over Stieber, 2 matches to 1
Bader: Stieber over McKenna, 2 matches to 1
Kania: McKenna over Stieber, 2 matches to none
Holmes: Stieber over McKenna, 2 matches to 1

BTW, they have Dake as a favorite 8 picks to 2 and Taylor as a unanimous pick (no surprise).

Jordan Oliver would've made this world team with ease

Stieber wins 2 straight!
I'm guessing 8-8 criteria and 8-0.

And when it happens, bdhof owes me $1,000,000

Nothing is easy at this level. Just ask Oliver how easy it was for the 4x AA and 2x NCAA champ to repeat in 2012. If I remember correctly, the top seeded Oliver got upset by some freshman from tOSU named Stieber. Oliver has made zero (as in "zero") US World Teams at the Senior level. Stieber, a year younger than Oliver, has made two, maybe a third after tonight, and has a Senior level World Gold in his back pocket. I agree that Oliver is very good and could beat Stieber and/or McKenna, but just as likely McKenna and/or Stieber could beat Oliver. And you have to show up to win. Oliver, thru a drug violation, isn't showing up this year.

If you want to read a very good preview before the match, I'd recommend this one from Eleven Warriors:

You'll have to split it with jayce, as he also picked McKenna in two straight.

McKenna wins round 1 8-8 on criteria. If anyone who watched it could fill in some details, that would be great. It was a wild back and forth match with the lead changing four times.

I was watching stick men and I saw a post on another site that said Logan won on criteria 8-8. Flo hasn't updated the final score yet.

Stieber vs McKenna - The Buckeye Battle

The veterans, Green, Burroughs, Gilman, Dake, Stieber and Taylor have shown that the time is not here yet for the young guns, other than Captain America as he plays the role as both a young gun and a veteran.

I was watching live and they said that one of the earlier scores was entered incorrectly at the table (I think they initially entered Logan's 4 pt as two 2s), which is why the scoreboard initially showed McKenna as holding criteria when the score was tied with 9 seconds left. Luckily the referee at the table noticed before they resumed action, so they fixed it to show Logan as holding criteria.

If it weren't so sad, it would be funny ...

From youth to Jr. High to HS to College and even at the "next-to-world" level, wrestling can't keep the scoreboard accurate.

This is the case in no other sport.

Agree. Seems like confusion at the scoring table is more the norm than the exception.
