I feel like Ohio is underrepresented at this event. It is my understanding that the event is a "true invitational" in that contestants must be invited in order to participate. I also thought that I heard that contestants expenses, plane fare, lodging, and perhaps more, is covered by Brooks. While the three Ohio athletes are certainly deserving of an invitation, there are many others that are also deserving. Did others get invitations and decline them? Also, NBON is next weekend. Doing both is doable but might be a bit much so perhaps that event posed a conflict for some. If the paid expenses information I heard about Brooks is true, though, that would seem to be a big incentive to participate at Brooks over NBON.

Ohio is one of the strongest states for quality prep track & field. To only have three athletes seems unjustified to me.
I think it is the combo of invite and and limited events. For example I think someone like Steiner on the girls side is going to NBON because they offer both events that she has a shot to win.

The mile field is sick and maybe with a hint of luck Horter could get near or below the 4 minute mile.

Washington is a LONG WAY further than North Carolina in terms of family/friend support. Brooks also has a reputation as a "distance" event, not as a sprint/jump/throws meet.

The Brooks is a great event but I'm not wild about the limited format. It would be nice to have field events also.
I think I saw an interview that she is not doing any post season races as she has switched directions and is now getting ready for the upcoming soccer season.

Abby is going to be playing soccer next weekend so no NBON. As for Ohio invitations, our state meet is later and we had a lot of bad weather, so some athletes didnít get invited because their times or marks might have been too late. Lucas Bons springs to mind.

Here are Ohio prep runners that I am aware of who have run faster mile times before they stared college than Dustin Horter's 4:04.82 at Mason on May 4, 2018. Who will Dustin pass if any?

1. 4:03.12, BRANNON KIDDER, Lancaster, Adidas Grand Prix, June 9, 2012.
2. 4:03.33, SAMUEL BORCHERS, Yellow Springs, Nike Outdoor Nationals, June 16, 2007.
3. 4:03.85, JOHN ZISHKA, Lancaster, Golden West Invitational, June 14, 1980.

Btw, two high school athletes who have run faster than Horter this year in the mile aren't even entered in the Brooks PR mile. Horter has stated he wants to be the best in the country in the mile this year. Will he be able to record the fastest time?

4:04.24, CAMERON PONDER, NC Mount Tabor, 16th Annual Music City Distance Carnival, Jun 2, 2018
4:04.53, BRODEY HASTY, TN Brentwood High School, Prefontaine Classic, May 26, 2018

For the 800, Nick Miller and Nathan Cousino also come to mind. Only 3 entrants in this event have faster times this year than these two. But I agree that these times were run too late in the year to get consideration.

Horter's big advantage in getting invited is that he ran fast times so early, 8:48 at Eastern Relays, 1:50 at Wayne, and 4:04 the first week of May.

You got the wrong guy. Massillon Washington's school record in the 1600/mile dates back to 1965 and is only a 4:33.9h.

I found a Brendon Mahoney from Marist HS in Georgia who ran a 1:50.17 in the 800 at the Georgia state meet in 1999. His Georgia Tech bio says he was Foot Locker National champ in the mile in 1999. He was an All-American in the 800 his freshman year at Georgia Tech.

Well, then they got the wrong guy.

From the actual 1999 Foot Locker National meet results:

Boys One Mile Run

1 Mahoney, Brendon
99 Cumming, GA
4:04.78 $ 1

2 Webb, Alan
01 Reston, VA
4:06.94 $ 1

http://nc.milesplit.com/meets/2937/r...w#.WxrwzopKiM8

Also of note from that meet:

Boys 2-Mile Run
1 Ritzenhein, Datham 01 Rockford, MI
9:01.79 1

2 Mueller, Jason 99 Shelby, OH 9:05.32 1

I totally forgot about Jason Mueller from Shelby. He was stud in DII. He had a big lead at the state XC meet the previous fall at the 2.5 mile mark when he either blew up or got hurt. Rob Myers ended up getting the win that day. Myers wasn't too shabby either.

An interesting side note here is that the winner from Georgia beat Alan Webb who actually broke Jim Ryan's sophomore national record in the event.

1 -Brendan Mahoney Marist, Atlanta, GA 4:04.78
2 **Alan Webb South Lakes, Reston, VA 4:06.94
{National Sophomore Class Record; previous 4:07.8,
Jim Ryan, East, Wichita, KS, 1963}

Understandable error.

While MileSplit, Dyestat, and all the other data-gathering/collating sites are wonderful and desirable, they are only as good as the individuals that oversee their accuracy and the format of the data loaded. I've found numerous errors and omissions on each of those sites, and as those of us old enough to know, the era before timing companies (basically, pre-Y2K) was devoid of much of the information distribution networks we now enjoy.

The information OHSAA publishes suffers from similar issues. They are not infallible; in fact, far from it when it comes to their collection of past state meet data for approximately the first 60 years of the state meet.

Horter wins the mile in 4:04.68.

10th place was Cruz Culpepper. I do believe he is the son of former Olympians Alan and Shayne Culpepper. I failed to notice him on the start list Lancer posted earlier in the thread. He should only be a sophomore, IIRC.

In a pre-race interview Brodey explains why he's running the 800m, he did run 1:52 which is his PR.

There was a rabbit in the race. It was Brodey Hasty. Check out the video at about the 1:42 mark going into the straightaway on lap two.
http://brooks-pr-invitational.runner...ideo_id=246362 In both races where Horter has run 4:04+ there was a rabbit and there were people lining the track. If you listen to Hasty's interview, he also talks about his race the previous week where he ran the time faster than Horter, rabbits and people lining the track. Is this what our sport has degenerated into, having meet management put rabbits into races to try to enable runners to get times faster than they would have otherwise. I don't like it. It takes away the purity of our sport by turning it into an obsession with fast times. Watching the video of the Brooks race, I can't see where Hasty helped Horter to a fast time. He was running too far ahead of him down the backstretch of lap two. Also, I believe Horter knew that Hasty wasn't going to finish the race. A rabbit is only effective if its not known if he is a legitimate entrant in the race.
