Many of us witnessed Nelloms' 13.30 (Region 4) national hurdles record, and his 45.59/20.47 double at the 1990 state meet.

I've seen several at the state meet but the most memorable for me was Fostoria's Cory Echelberry winning the 1999 Division II state discus title with a throw of 203-7 at Dayton Welcome Stadium.
The discus area was in a park next to the stadium.
At the time, officials placed a flag noting the record in the middle of the landing area.
Also at the time, the landing area was not cordoned off and fans were allowed to sit or stand where they wanted.
In 1999, fans were sitting on blankets and chairs in front of the flag when Echelberry, who won the title in 1998, began warming up.
Officials warned fans to move back because Echelberry was expected to challenge the then-record of 194-10.
His first warm-up throw landed near the flag and skipped through the crowd, sending fans scurrying.
Each throw after that kept moving them back until he ended with the title and the record.
His 203-7 is still the longest throw at a state meet, regardless of division.

That park has always had good throws over the years, but unfortunately, Dayton officials have always been poor at conducting a proper throwing event. They've REFUSED to put down sector arcs or even basic distance indicators for years. And yes, I do mean REFUSED...I mentioned this to officials years ago and was told that they've always done it without any type of distance marks and patently couldn't see any need for them. I hope the meet never returns to Welcome or the DPS.
