Crap. I may have Saturday playoff games and will have to skip some college games and weekend trips.

Good progress, I personally wish it was back to splitting them up more. I liked d1 and d3 on different nights just because I cover a team in both divisions.

Good move, especially when my alma mater could be playing Friday night and the team my son coaches for on Saturday!

I am glad though I was getting into driving to Pa. to see playoff games there on Saturday.
I might still go a time or two.

I guess one could say this experiment failed bigtime?

Thought from day one that this was a money loser. Most out here and beyond did . OSU and college football reason was always specious . Glad they came around so quickly. Now they just need to amend the running clock rule to say 40 points and let the JV players and guys who work their azzes off get on the field on Friday nights.

This is more complex that simple spread sheet economics / field availability like the Friday - Saturday dynamic.

Nice work Ohassa , I liked your transfer rule change as well , it's a start. Now? Get rid of that stupid 30 point running clock rule YESTERDAY!!

I don't know what the financials looked like in order to declare it an epic failure, but the grass certainly wasn't greener on the other side.

OHSAA 2018 Football Playoff Schedule and State Championships Site Announced

Division I, II, III and VI games on Fridays; Division IV, V and VII games on Saturdays; all games will kick off at 7 p.m.; regional assignments announced; state finals will remain in Canton in 2018

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio High School Athletic Association has announced details for the 2018 football regional assignments and playoffs schedule, including the location for the state championship games. The OHSAA will return to using Saturday nights for several divisions during the playoffs and the 2018 title games will return to Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.

The OHSAA Board of Directors approved school playoff regional assignments and the playoff schedule Wednesday during its June meeting and authorized the OHSAA Executive Director’s office finalize the contract with Visit Canton and the Pro Football Hall of Fame to host the 2018 finals. The regional maps, which show the number of schools within each region, and the lists of schools in each region are posted at: http://www.ohsaa.org/sports/football

In November, playoff games in Divisions I, II, III and VI will be played on Fridays, while Division IV, V and VII playoff games will be played on Saturdays. Last year, the OHSAA experimented with having all playoff games on Friday nights during the first four rounds. In addition, all playoff games will kick off at 7 p.m. Previously, Friday playoff games kicked off at 7:30 p.m.

“We still have good attendance throughout the playoffs, but the overall total attendance dropped in 2017 when we moved all the games to Fridays,” said Beau Rugg, OHSAA Director of Officiating and Sport Management and the OHSAA’s football administrator. “Some parts of the state liked staying away from Saturdays for playoff games, but we also received quite a bit of feedback, mainly from the smaller schools, that they hoped we would return to having games on Saturdays, too, so their communities could see two games per weekend instead of one.”

The specific dates and times for the state championship games in Canton will be announced after the state semifinals November 23 and 24.

2018 OHSAA Football Schedule

Monday, July 30 – Start date for practice (5-day acclimatization regulation in effect)

Sunday, August 5 – Mandatory day off

Tuesday, August 7 through Saturday, August 18 – Scrimmages permitted

Monday, August 20 – Regular-season games may begin

Saturday, October 27 – Regular-season ends

Sunday, October 28 – Final computer points posted and playoff qualifiers announced

Friday, November 2 – Regional Quarterfinals in Divisions I, II, III and VI

Saturday, November 3 – Regional Quarterfinals in Divisions IV, V and VII

Friday, November 9 – Regional Semifinals in Divisions I, II, III and VI

Saturday, November 10 – Regional Semifinals in Divisions IV, V and VII

Friday, November 16 – Regional Finals in Divisions I, II, III and VI

Saturday, November 17 – Regional Finals in Divisions IV, V and VII

Friday, November 23 – State Semifinals in Divisions I, II, III and VI

Saturday, November 24 – State Semifinals in Divisions IV, V and VII

State Championship Games at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, Canton (Nov. 29-Dec. 2)

Predictable that they went back to both days. They were idiots to switch it in the first place. Of course attendance and money would drop. You took the ability for people to attend 2 games a week away. I said that on here a lot

But in typical ohsaa fashion , they still can't get out of their own way. They put the top 3 divisions all on the same day taking away ability to go to 2 of those games. D1 and D2 should be on separate days with D3 and D4 rotating

While I didn't care because I would generally not go to two games, I, too, thought it was better on two nights. That said, I would not call them "idiots". By most accounts they run a great organization that does much good for kids across this state.

Well I would call them that. They make a lot of stupid decisions. So oh well

They talk about attendance dropping because of football not being on both days ..

Then they take the 3 highest enrollment divisions and put them all on the same day .... that's stupidity right there.

People are more intrigued by the higher enrollment divisions being a neutral party. It's just common sense.

D1 and D2 should be separate days

Part of the angst over the Saturdays was that for years, D1 was always on Saturday and D2 was always on Friday. Had they rotated those two since inception of the playoff format, I don't think there would have been that push by D1 schools to change anything.

They treated it like a trial, but seemed quite obtuse to the downsides of going just to Fridays. In the end, good that they corrected it.

But, as pointed out. Having D1, 2, and 3 on Friday puts the three biggest against one another for fans and venues. Generally the divisions needing the largest stadiums that are available. Again, those larger stadiums might not want to host if they think their own HS might be making a playoff run. In the past, Massillon was a prime example of not playing on the date their team might (stress 'might') be playing.

But, then, aside from that, they just bumped Friday games from 7:30pm to 7pm. I'm curious the reasoning. Weather/cold affecting it enough that 30 minutes matter? For a work night, that extra half hour might be the difference between fans making a 60-90 minute trip after work to see their school play a late round playoff and staying at home.

Before all the D1, 2 and 3 supporters get all upset that their games are all going to be on the same day, look at it from the standpoint of those of us that support small division schools. In a mixed division league you could have as many as four divisional playoff teams. Here in Marion county I would have the possibility of supporting league teams, or close by teams, from 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7. The school I support in 5, big league rival in 4 or the school my granddaughters attend in 7. Just saying, the switch to Friday/Saturday playoff nights without the switching of D1 and 2 to different nights, doesn't just impact those supporters.

They're doing this so practice starts on a Monday. You get the five days of acclimation in, then a contact allowable day on Saturday before the mandatory rest day on Sunday.

All the schools around me are D2. So two can play that game. The top divisions are going to draw the most fan interest and crowds in most cases. It's bad business to have d1 and D2 on the same night

So I play on your field and your game. All I said was that one through three are not the only ones affected by this change. So you draw the most fan interest. Let me know when you top some of those MAC 50-50 drawings.

This isn't hard ...

They changed it back due to attendance and money dropping ...

Then they put the games that get the most interest all on the same night. Again that's bad business

Has it been revealed anywhere why they went with 7pm start time for Fridays? It's always been 7:30 for as long as I remember. Just seems odd to go back to Saturday games, but then hamstring Friday games by starting a half hour earlier.
