Biggest Sports Blunders

With JR's bonehead play last night, what are some other infamous sports blunders? Immediately coming to mind is Chris Webber's Final Four time out at Michigan and Seattle throwing it on the 1 yard line despite having Marshawn "Beast Mode" Lynch.

The plays don't have to be from the playoffs/postseason but obviously those are more serious blunders than your middle of the season blunders.

Wasn't there a World Series game that a team left a player in that had an injury
and a ball got by him costing them the game?

Getting an OSU tattoo and then going to UK.

Also giving yourself the nickname the Prototype. Yes I want to give myself a nickname where I am an unfinished product that needs to be improved upon.

Historically there is one that really stands out, Merkle's Boner. It is such an (in)famous play that it has its own wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merkle%27s_Boner

Merkle's failure to advance to second base on what should have been a game-winning hit led instead to a forceout at second and a tied game. The Cubs later won the makeup game, which proved decisive as they beat the Giants by one game to win the National League (NL) pennant for 1908.

Another that stands out is Lindsey Jacobellis' Crash with Olympic Gold firmly in her grasp>

Byner's fumble, while a HUGE mistake, is not a real blunder.

Jim Marshall returning a fumble the other way for a safety instead of a TD, that is a blunder.

Leon Lett celebrating before reaching the endzone and Don Beebe knocking the ball out. THAT is a blunder.

The countless idiots who, in an attempt to look cool, have dropped the football JUST before crossing the goaline. Those are blunders.

Earlier this year, the Mets batted out of order...in the first inning against the Reds. This was probably a month ago.
The lineup that was posted in the dugout was different that the one given to the home plate umpire before the game. Oops...

blunĚder /ˈbləndər/
noun
1. a stupid or careless mistake.
verb
1. make a stupid or careless mistake; act or speak clumsily.

After further considering the definition of blunder, I can agree with your assessment.

Sig Hansen can only hope to improve
Brett Favre desperately throwing it downfield into coverage and getting picked off when the Vikings were only a few yards outside of field goal range. It still hurts

Probably in the Dave Shula era. Bengals with the lead going for a meaningless field goal with seconds on the clock. Field goal gets blocked and the opponent runs it back for the winning TD.

I believe it was Philly against the Giants in the NFL many moons ago. All they had to do was take a knee and the game is over but they ran a play, fumbled and the other team ran it in to win..... I could be wrong about the teams though but it did happen. Maybe some of you old timers remember it better....

Also, anytime Joey Votto is on the base paths!

I don't think "take a knee" had been invented yet.

Before Jim Marshall, there was USC's Roy Riegels, running 80 yards the wrong way in the 1929 Rose Bowl before being tackled on the 1 by a teammate. USC was caught for a safety on the next play, and lost 8-7.

Steve Bartman, Cubs fan who interfered with a Cubs outfielder while trying to snag a foul ball in 2003, likely preventing the Cubs from going to the World Series.

One of the oddest blunders I've heard is the "We'll Kick To The Clock" incident during the 1962 AFL championship game. Dallas captain Abner Haynes had instructions to choose the wind at his back instead of the ball if he won the overtime coin toss, but as soon as he said "we'll kick", he lost both options. Despite his error, Dallas beat Houston 20-17.

Isn't that Herm Edwards about to scoop up the fumble and score the winning TD?
