Why isn't baseball double elimination in Ohio?

Discuss.

Weather would be a primary reason.

It would take until 3 weeks into June to run a 2 and out State Tourney--perfectly fine the way it is--the best team on that day wins--exciting!!

No reason why the state semi fijnals cannot be played at a neutral place in between the two teams, and then run a best of 3 series for the title in each division.

I think the only way to do it would be to have teams make the playoffs like they do in football. The regular season is already terribly short. This would make it even worse unless they could encourage the non-playoff teams to keep playing.

Single elimination has served us well for almost 100 years.

This discussion comes up every couple of years or so.

The first set of State Champions in baseball were crowned in 1928. It's been one an out (as it should be) for the last 89 years.

The format isn't going to change for the reasons already listed. (and then some)

1. Pitching
2. Rain
3. See #2

5.....you get the idea

Best 2 of 3 for the finals would be ok with me....but only if you could give a full week of rest after the semi-finals so both teams could have all of their pitching available.

That is what I would suggest.

Week prior is the semi finals, then a week later the finals.

I would make it a DH on the first two games, and if they split then they deciding game the next day.

It really wouldn't be that difficult.

You know, Indiana just started their state tournament last week. Why is it such a big deal for us to start ours later?

May be tied to the facility availability. Have to deal with MiLB schedules.

Powers that be want to start their summer break as soon as possible!

As far as availability....if the Clips can routinelhy have this upcoming weekend on the road I am sure that can be requested to be later in June if they so chose.

School admins/ADs just want the year to be over!

Pitching? Sorry, but baseball is a sport in which one or two strong pitchers can dominate. I would love double elimination or pool play style tournament with many games being played to utilize all the pitching so the stronger team and not necessarily the team with the strongest arm moves on.

That is why I would like to see it.

In NWO we have a summer league called ACME. At its peak there was 125+ teams involved and was a pretty solid league...until all the travel and such took over.

They still have a double elim sectional and district tournament and then an 8 team state tournament. Up until recently it also was a double elimination state tournament.
You really got to see how deep some pitching staffs were, and yes...there were teams who would lose their first game and go through the losers bracket and double dip a team in the finals.

I have been a proponent of a best of 3 state title for a very long time.
It wont happen, but would be cool

Ohio is far from being the only state where weather and pitching are concerns in late spring.

So why can other states with the same concerns make double elimination tournaments work?

The majority, if not all, of the state's that hold Double out tournaments are located in warm weather and they start as early as February. Though it would be fun to have something like that up here, the logistics do not look promising. Besides, you wouldn't want it cutting in to your precious travel ball now wouldn't you?

This is the weekend for graduation at the school I attended. Many of my classmates either had jobs lined up to start the following week, or left for summer term college or the military. Extending the season would have meant playing without a good number of seniors (had we been good enough to get there).

If it is known before the season then I don't see a problem. Does Indiana have a lot of seniors who miss the tournament because they extend till the 3rd week of june?

We were the total opposite, pretty much every senior had a senior trip planned or took off a little bit of time before starting their employment. A few kids had to leave right from the ballpark to leave for the trip was the only issue we had when it was rained out a couple of days.

The one major advantage to single elimination is that everything is on the line every single game. One team walks off the field with their season over and one gets to advance to the next round. It is more exciting this way.

According to the conversations I had this weekend with Indiana teams (my son played up in Grand Park this past weekend), The biggest drawback I heard was that summer teams were missing some of their best players because the state tourney was maybe half way done.

South Carolina runs a double elimination tournament all the way through the state finals. State finals is a best of 3 series. Now SC begins their regular season in late February. Tournament begins in late April. Only the top 32 teams make the tournament. State finals were 2 weeks ago. So they essentially run a double elimination tournament with 32 teams inside of a month. This with SC having spring football that begins in early May as well. Bigger schools normally don't run into an issue with this. But you get down to the smaller classification schools and you might be without several football starters for spring ball. I work at a large class school of 1,800 kids. Only but 1 or 2 of our baseball players play football so not a huge issue. Plus our football team stinks, so there's that.

The Final Series is spread over two weekends and is complete by May 19 as well....

Tennessee and North Carolina have a best of three for their state championships.... Those games are played at multiple locations instead of one venue. Both states have in the area of 400 schools.

There's more to this than, "let's play a series for the champion".
