NFL Owners Approve National Anthem Policy for 2018

Quote:
The NFL will enact a national anthem policy for 2018 that requires players and league personnel on the sideline to stand but gives them the option to remain in the locker room if they don't want to stand, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced Wednesday.

Under the change approved by team owners at the Spring League Meeting, individual clubs will have the power to set their own policies to ensure the anthem is being respected during any on-field action. If a player chooses to protest on the sideline, the NFL will fine the team. The player also could be fined by his team, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network's Judy Battista reported.

Goodell said the six changes under the policy were unanimously approved by team owners who voted. San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York said he abstained from voting, in part, due to the lack of player involvement in the decision process.

"The policy adopted today was approved in concert with the NFL's ongoing commitment to local communities and our country -- one that is extraordinary in its scope, resources, and alignment with our players," Goodell said in a statement. "We are dedicated to continuing our collaboration with players to advance the goals of justice and fairness in all corners of our society.

"It was unfortunate that on-field protests created a false perception among many that thousands of NFL players were unpatriotic. This is not and was never the case."

Intrigued to see what explanation they come up with for declining ratings this year.

It's not forced...you are free to stay in the locker room.

How about they tackle something worthwhile, like concussions? The whole fiasco is just silly.

This whole things a mess. Some teams already saying they'll pay the fines if their players want to kneel. The NFLPA's going to fight this and you could even see even more wide spread protest. Remember this didn't really blow up until Trump and others told the NFL, owners and players they shouldn't be allowed to do it...just made things worse. This may do the same.

Trump and his minions did win in that they were able to convince the dupes that the protest was against the flag and not police killing unarmed black men. He knows his audience.

I absolutely have no idea why anyone would not like this policy? It has nothing to do with Donald Trump. It requires players on the field to stand for the Anthem, but there is an out. If they don't want to participate, they stay in the locker room...everyone's happy right???

And from the insular world of the owner's suite, some of these guys probably think that they are being proactive and heading off this season's protests, even as they revive the show. Makes me wonder if some want the buzz.

When a drunk hillbilly runs on the field, the networks won't show him during the broadcast. Just do the same for the players who don't stand. And move on.

Donald Trump had an opinion on this when it happened. But for people to think he had any influence on the NFL making policy is just nutty.

And it's not aligned with his opinion anyway. If he made the rule, he's have all players stand proud for the anthem. Period.

This is most likely going to end in a federal antitrust lawsuit which will just drag it out longer keeping it in the public eye. NFL believed they needed to come up with a policy to appease sponsors. Doing so without NFLPA input wasn't smart.

Yeah, sure. And UPS employees would sue if the company told them they couldn't wear MAGA hats on the job.

You don't have a right to protest at work. The players need to STF up, get on with their job, and leave the politics out of it.

You know whatís a bigger problem? Armed black men killing armed black men. What will be the body count in Chicago this weekend? Over 10 isnít a wild guess.Focusing on police violence is a deflection bc nobody wants to admit, a lot of this violence is the Black Communityís own doing. There wasnít this kind of street violence 40 yrs ago bc a 2 parent household was normal.

I think the players are barking up the wrong tree. They think they have alot of support and they really don't. In fact, in the court of public opinion, they are losing big time.

When you have any people, athletic, entertainers, CEO's people who make alot of money...and they complain about work conditions to regular people, doesn't get very far. At some point the players will figure this one.

And they donít even have to show up for the ceremony. If the message is what matters, this shouldnít be such a deterrent.

These protests were costing the NFL $. The NFL is a business first, itís not their job to be a moral authority.

Nothing forced about it. The players can stay in the locker room if they want. Iím hardly a Trumper, but this feels like a fair compromise to me. IMO, the act of kneeling became more fashionable than the message itself.

I'm far from convinced that's true, at least to any significant degree. There are a ton of legitimate reasons ratings are declining(over-saturation, concussions, people watching less tv in general, etc.) but answering those questions would be a lot more uncomfortable for NFL leadership, so this was a convenient issue to cast the blame on.

My guess is the ratings will be down yet again this year and we'll get to hear how it's because players are staying in the locker room or because Tony Romo said something political during a broadcast or whatever.
