OK, I'll start a Hoban 2018 thread so that we can quarantine the Hoban talk in hopes it doesn't continue to poison other threads.

A valiant, but ultimately futile, quest.

Please don't. It will go like this for 6 pages:

"Hoban will be good again"
"Hoban is good so they must cheat"
"Hoban players work hard"
"Hoban is only good because they find ways to cheat "
"Hoban has a lot of young talent as well as veteran returng talent"
"Hoban only has good players because they couldn't get into StVM and/orHoban is cheating. Why else would good players go to Hoban?"
"Hoban has a great shot to make it to the finals again"
"Hoban never won State before...they only won because they cheat"
"Hoban has a lot of kids with college offers"
"Hoban kids never had this many offers so that means Hoban cheats"
"Blah, blah, blah, blah, personal attacks, personal accusations, baseless inuuendo of free tuition, more name-calling......."

You are dead wrong on this. Weight Room is the difference for Hoban. It takes local school cast-offs and makes them D1.

Why the lol part? Purdue is a good educational institution and a rising football program. Clearly not elite, but no longer awful.

1. Hoban

2. Everybody else...

It's a down year for Summit County football. Stow and Hudson are down and it is unlikely Barberton cannot repeat last year's success. Buchtel and East will be successful in the City, but aren't likely to have success beyond that. SVSM should improve as the year goes on. Fortunately, in the small schools, Mogadore and Manchester should be good and the continuing improvement at CVCA is fun to watch.

Yep...thatís the same QB who led the Irish to the state semi-finals last year.

Whole team stunk it up against Massillon. Not sure why you would choose to single out the quarterback. The good news is that was only 1 game. Team played much better against Walsh and will look to get better again this week against Benedictine.

Itís all about how you finish the season...not how you start.

"It’s all about how you finish the season...not how you start."

Couple years ago when I played this statement rang so true. We lost the opener to a tough Falcons team, managed to squeak out a win over the Eagles, dropped a tough one to the Dawgs, but ran the table and got better every week. Additionally, the girl I was dating was not what one would call "hot", but once we started winning, I started "winning" and I also got the cheerleading captain and their advisor, who I now call WIFE.
A great season!

I concur. Do you guys think this has any correlation from Hoban stockpiling talent from Summit County? Has to be right?

Coventry hasn't lost anybody to hoban recently, in spite of that billboard hoban has right next to our high school. A laughable waste of $ if you ask me. With that being said, I would like to see Hobans state championship dominance challenged and broken. Otherwise Hoban will become the mecca of all ring-chasers in Northeast Ohio, and I'm not so sure I want that not even 3 miles from my own Coventry. So, Massillon, you have one job this year. Get it done.

Why is that? Maybe they didnít want to pay 12K for a private education, Billboardís are their to recruit students first. They are all over the area. Hoban must reach out to recruit students otherwise they would never survive. Yes itís an advantage if you also get good students and athletes as well. Not a waste of money, part of a comprehensive campaign to attract students.

I recall your best lineman a couple of years ago going to St V. Caleb?

You already have ring chasers closer to you in St V Basketball. Not going to change in the future. Coaching, facilities and Christian education along with a long record of success will keep those kids coming.

I wouldnít pin my hopes on Massillon either.

Caleb was tough for sure, but only a minor concern. We open enrolled Jaylan Campbell, who went to SVSM until his junior year. We open enrolled Bobby Campbell from Ellet. We had guys like Justin Thompson, and Brady McGraw step up, who were both better linemen then Caleb. And don't forget about Hargrove, currently starting for U of Pitt. I assure you private schools are no issue for Coventry, and indeed, Hoban is wasting its resources by having a billboard right next to Coventry High school. And ultimately, while we may have lost a couple individuals to the privates, we gain far more from our open enrollment in 1 year, then we lose to the private schools in 5.

Isn't that billboard fairly close to St. Francis deSales, a Catholic school from which Hoban would hope to draw students?

Summit County private school sports success has been historically cyclical. Success breeds contempt, but it also attracts talent.

Sounds like Utopia in Coventry. Shouldnít have to worry about a billboard and be happy that Hoban is wasting its resources. Keep hoping for that Massillon win.

Summit County Private School success may be cyclical. But I don't see a recovery in the cards for Walsh Jesuit. Nordonia, Hudson, Stow, Woodridge are rather hard to draw football players from nowadays.

As for SVSM their football team is not the team it was 5 years ago. SVSM basketball is elite, but now they are where they belong, in D1.

Really its just Hoban football who have managed to take their program to a level virtually unmatched by any other program in the state. And until the rest of the state figures out Hoban, and how to beat them, that dominance will continue. Part of that is as Cougarfan likes to point out, their their weightroom, and their strength and conditioning program. But also part of that is the sheer talent they have amassed and will continue to attract from a fairly large radius.

In order to mitigate this, it is the job of many of the public school districts to try to improve their programs, and demonstrate a kid can succeed athletically as well as academically from their respective districts. The ones that can do it the best, like Hudson, or Stow, will have little problems with private schools. The ones that fail to do that, like Kent, will hemorrhage athletes to the privates, and who can blame them, at that point.

All I know for sure, is us Coventry folk will try to continue to resist losing athletes to the private schools, by mean of strong community, doing the best we can with what we have in all our sports, and continuing to provide a solid education, to both our in district students, as well as our many open enrollies.

Its no Utopia for us in Coventry. We are just a community of ordinary folks striving to accomplish extraordinary things. While I would like Massillon to win, it will not make or break our spirits.
