Results are starting to trickle in. Turpin Girls finish 11th in 4 x 800 relay emerging elite in 9:32.96. These same four finished 15th at state.

Zariah Hodgkin now at Princeton after being at Withrow up until this year ran 14.43 in the EE 100m hurdles to qualifly to the finals, finished 7th in the finals with a 14.57 both with legal wind readings. Her time in the prelims places her 10th on the all time Cincinnati listing for the top 25.

Freshman Nathan Moore of Uniontown Lake ran 4:16.67 in heat #1 to finish 2nd overall in the EE Mile. Moore won the 1600 and 3200 at the DI North Canton District Meet. However, he did not compete in the rest of the OHSAA postseason due to a previously scheduled European vacation mentioned in the final 1/3 of the article linked below.

I just took a look at the Boys' Emerging Elite results and saw that whoever is doing the stats for the meet haven't updated national records. They still list 18' 3.5" by Barber back in 2012. Ground Control to NBON...the record is now 19' 5 1/2".

Watch for Olentangy Orange's Grace Frye in the Heptathlon. While she sits 12th after Day 1 with 2757 points, she's an all-around athlete with much experience and I project her somewhere in the 4450-4650 range after tomorrow's events.

Peggy Odita (Upper Arlington) still holds the all-time Ohio best of 5163 points from 1986. FYI - In case anyone is wondering "well, didn't the women's javelin change" between 1986 and now? Yes, it did. However, the points table remained the same as there is extremely little difference in performances at the heptathlete's level. In fact, I'd argue its more challenging because flat throws are more common with the newer implement.

Peggy Odita was a great track and field athlete, but I would argue that she is more famous for something she did outside of track and field. Does anyone in Yappiland know what it might be?

My memory might be failing me, but didn't she also play volleyball?

Note: I cheated and know the answer, but will let others chime in. Now that I know the answer, I remember what she did outside the sport now.

Was she part of one of the gladiator shows? I know there have been some track athletes involved in that but can't remember who it was.

Give this poster a gold star! I was too young to know of Odita's HS track and field career, but I remembered her from American Gladiators both from when she initially competed on the show and from watching countless reruns through the years.

Odita was the Season 5 Grand Champion. She also won a Tournament of Champions alumni show pitting the Season 3, 4, and 5 Grand Champions against each other. She came back in Season 7 to defeat the Season 6 Grand Champion. Prior to winning the Season 5 Grand Championship, she won the International Challenge of Champions tournament that aired as part of Season 4 of AG while competing for Nigeria. She also won Season 2 of the International Gladiators competition that aired as part of Season 7 of AG. Odita is easily the greatest female contestant in the history of the show.

Incidentally, the Season 5 Men's Grand Champion Wesley "Two Scoops" Berry was probably the best male contestant the show ever had. The gladiators had no answer for him. In addition to Season 5, he won the Tournament of Champions as well as Season 1 of the International Gladiators competition.

Too young during Odita's track & field career? Wow, she was after my days as a yute.

I remember Shariffa Barksdale (sp?), a 400 hurdler? being a reporter on one of those shows. Several track athletes have found success in those venues. Didn't Odita do quite well at the NCAA level? Stanford?

As you can tell I only remember bits and pieces.

Grace Frye placed 7th with 4557 points, right in the middle of where I predicted (4450-4650). Not hard to figure that one based on some of her indoor marks in ancillary events. Congrats to her.

1990 PAC-10 champion and All-American at Stanford in the heptathlon, also competed at the '96 Trials. Odita went to UCLA for grad school, but I don't know that she had any eligibility left when she got there.

The race I'm looking forward to is tomorrow's girls DMR. Gahanna Lincoln has it stacked, and looks to have a real shot at Beaumont's legendary 11:45.82 state record from 2002.

According to the start lists, Lincoln plans to lead off with Martinez on the 1200(2:08/4:57 PR's, probably good for at least a 3:30), Groves 400(open PR of 61.5), Deas on the 800(2:12 open PR), and Steigerwald anchoring(4:56). That will put them right at 11:40.

Keep an eye out for Centerville's Yariel Soto (Junior) who is currently leading the Decathlon after 2 events. He's put up 1650 points with marks of 11.23 & 7.11m (23' 4").

His pole vault performance in the OHSAA was also pretty stellar. Could get some good points there as well.

Soto is leading after Day 1 with 3727 points, 62 points up on 2nd place. While his putting of the shot was sub-par compared to the field, his HJ & 400m skills brought him back up and into the lead. I'll do a review of his other skills overnight and give my prediction for tomorrow's events. Unless he's a total weenie arm in the discus and javelin and a putz in the 1500m, I think he's got a shot at the meet record of a little over 7000 points (HS implements). Should be interesting!

Kings girls finished 4th in the 4 x 800 relay championship in 8:59.61. I consider under 9:00 in the girls 4 x 800 relay a magical time. Kings was 3rd at state in 9:01 the last two years and finally knocked down the 9:00 door. I'm happy for them.

Kings should have an excellent shot at Turpin's Cincy record of 12:04.49 in the DMR tomorrow(fast heat with Gahanna Lincoln).

Beavercreek's Taylor Ewert, winner of the Girls' 2000mSC yesterday at NBON, is currently leading the 10km walk Junior nationals in Bloomington, IN. She's split just under 24 minutes half-way thru and lapped the field. She's well on her way to destroying her PR of 51:12.42 from last year.

She's also going to end up destroying he Men's 10kmW winner!

Why have this here if she's running in Indiana? You also have a separate thread about it. No reason to post it on two separate threads.
