Memorial Day: Remembering an Athlete

Here's an article by Chris Lillstrung of the News-Herald about Wickliffe grad Bob Poor, who was killed in World War II. Lillstrung also briefly touches on what the state tournament looked like at that time, as Poor was state champ in the broad jump his senior season. He was killed in action less than a year later.

Our home relay meet is named in honor of Jason Manse, Canton CC class of '93. While he was not killed in combat, he did die in service to our country.

From the meet program:
While at Central Catholic, Jason set standards for both academic achievement and athletic excellence. At the conclusion of his track and field career at Central Catholic, Jason was a 5-time state qualifier, a 3-time All-Ohioan, and a school record holder in 4 events: the 400 meter dash (49.7h), the 4x100 meter relay (43.53), the 4x400 meter relay (3:22.80), and the 4x800 meter relay (8:00.12). Those 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay records still stand today. Jason’s greatest moment as a Central Catholic track and field athlete came as a member of the 4x400 meter relay team that won the Division II state championship in 1993. Following his graduation from Central Catholic, Jason attended Duke University on an R.O.T.C. scholarship. At Duke, Jason continued his track and field career and earned his degree in 1997. As a Navy pilot, Jason flew numerous missions during the Iraq War, and upon returning to the states, he continued his military service by training new pilots. Jason was killed on January 10, 2006 during a training exercise.
