Central District Division III

Took the time to look up records of the 26 schools in the District. 2 teams advance to Regionals- last year Harvest Prep and Africentric advanced to State Tournament with Africentric winning the state semi-final matchup.

2019 records thru 1/27
Africentric 8-7
Amanda Clearcreek 11-5
Ready 6-8
Columbus Academy 10-4
Columbus International 2-12
East Knox 10-6
Marion Elgin 6-9
Fairbanks 12-2
Fredericktown 9-6
Grandview Hts 9-5
Grove City Christian 4-10
Harvest Prep 12-2
Heath 6-10
Horizon Science 5-11
Johnstown 12-2
Liberty Union 7-9
Madison Plains 4-10
Mount Gilead 4-11
Galion Northmor 7-9
Northridge 6-9
North Union 7-8
Marion Pleasant 10-4
Utica 2-12
Wellington 8-5
West Jefferson 12-4
Worthington Christian 12-4

My Top 12 Seeds as this point are
#1 Harvest Prep (not as dominant as last year but very good)
#2 Johnstown (likes a half court game- would love to see a team get them in a full court game)
#3 Worthington Christian (Junoir laden team with a fab freshmen)
#4 Columbus Academy (senior laden team that also likes a half court game)
#5 Africentric (probably should not be a top 8 seed but history is on their side)
#6 Fairbanks (schedule is questionable but 12-2 is 12-2)
#7 Grandview Hts (could be a higher seed than this has been dealing with injuries and illness all year)
#8 Marion Pleasant
$9 Amanda Clearcreek
#10 West Jefferson (beat Worthington Christian early but not 100% sold)
#11 Wellington
#12 East Knox/Fredericktown

I think there are 7 teams that could win District Titles: Harvest Prep, Johnstown, Worthington Christian, Columbus Academy, Africentric, Grandview Hts and Marion Pleasant.

Add Cristo Rey 0-10 to this list who Harvest Prep will likely play. Every one is going to try to avoid Harvest Prep. Harvest Prep is going to go to Ohio U region but I think it’s a big mistake with Wheelersburg being there. It would be interesting to see who makes it to the Bowling Green region.

Harvest Prep is too good to lose to any of these teams IMO. Plus they have the experience of making it to State last year. D3 is certainly loaded, but it just seems like HP is too much. They are beating the top D4 teams by 40-50 points and have only been held close by Wellington.

I'm by no means an HP fan (just look at their transfers and recruiting issues of the past), but they are a step above everyone else in my eyes.

Good for the other top seeds they can avoid HP in the central district and maybe not meet them until the State-semi's. I can see no teams making it to the the states from central district because the Bowling Green region is tough and Ohio U region has Wheelersburg with Tanner Holden who will be a hard out from him just alone.

It will be interesting to see which regional teams line up to go to.....especially after seeing Ottawa Glandorf put a beatdown on Africentric on Saturday in Pickerington. Can't imagine the Nubians want to match up with them again...and Archbold, who already beat the Titans could be there also

Prep beat Wheelersburg last year at Ohio U.

Plus, one of the following will more than likely be in BG; Genoa #6 in AP poll with two 1,000 point scorers, or #14 Evergreen or unranked Cardinal Stritch.

Here are some highlights of Genoa's "2nd best player". Kid is a physical freak 6'5" 225+. I like the dunk vs Fostoria when he jumped over the guy trying to take a charge.

It's tough to tell with Genoa...their schedule is just brutally bad this year. They don't have a team in their league capable of challenging them and they play everyone twice. They do have a matchup with D2 Top 10 Wauseon coming up later in the season. At this point, realistically I don't see Edgerton being a factor in the Toledo CC district...likely Genoa or Stritch moving on to BG into a semi-final matchup with whoever comes up from Columbus.

You mean Evergreen, right?

They can beat either of them on a given night, but the odds are not good to get them both back to back. As mentioned in another thread it will be interesting to see where Evergreen goes if they are the 3 seed.

The Lima district winner should have no problem with the Norwalk winner (Upper Sandusky, Western Reserve, Carey and Oak Harbor look to be the top teams)......after a brutal district final between Archbold and Ottawa Glandorf.

I do agree that the #1 seed in the Columbus district might avoid BG.

Africentric is not the team they were last. Grandview Hts also beat Africentric by 16 this year. Africentric will get respect seeding points because they play in the Columbus City League and will play anybody so sometimes their record is deceiving but this year they have struggled. Any of the top 6-8 seeds in the this district can beat Africentric but the Nubians could get hot at tourney time and win another District Championship.

With all due respect, the #1 seed will probably be Harvest Prep: a team that already decided before the season started to go into the district tournament which feeds into the Athens Regional. Has a lot less to do with BG being very good (which it is!), and moreso HP wanting their road to the Schott to run through the SE corner of the state: which they’ve done for something like eight of the past ten years, and reaching state semi-finals/finals by such every time.

I think Wellington goes before Amanda-Clearcreek, and I think Liberty Union has a case to be seeded higher than Amanda.

Tough to argue too much with their system. Wellington just lost to Fisher Catholic at home, but they've also proven they can compete with anyone. I'm pretty sure teams won't want to pick on them when determining their spots. I'm pretty much at a loss at this point and just want to see how it shakes out!

So Prep hoops Ohio has Harvest Prep and Johnstown as the district champs. What is everyone pick for the 2 central district champs for D3?

Meadowbrook is defending D-2 last year from Athens. They’ll probably be in D-3 region this year. They will also be a tough out in Athens if they get there. HP will be the favorite.

HP is the no-brainer in Columbus 2, but if Wellington can break through Academy in round two, then watch out. Hard to beat a team three times, especially one that has the right idea of how to beat you.

Johnstown is a great team, but the LCL was not a good league this year. Wins over Alder and DeSales suggest that they can bring it, but I like the odds for whoever comes out of the top half in the Columbus 1 bracket (GH/WC.)

Central District Division III start play on Monday.

Central District Bracket 1 going to Bowling Green
#18 Heath 28 at #6 Grandview Heights 66
#19 Northridge 46 at #2 Worthington Christian 66
#16 Fredericktown 80 at #13 Liberty Union 67
#17 Galion Northmor 35 at #8 Marion Pleasant 54
#10 Columbus Ready 62 at #5 Fairbanks 48

Ready at Fairbanks should be a great game. Would not be surprised to see Ready pull the upset. Heath has played Johnstown tough so I expect Heath to give Grandview Hts all they want. Fredicktown/Liberty Union should be a good game but see Liberty Union winning.

Central 2 Bracket going to Ohio University
#24 Grove City Christian 41 at #7 Africentric 70
#20 Horizon Science 63 at #12 Wellington School 72
#21 Marion Elgin 41 at #4 Columbus Academy 70
#15 East Knox 32 at #14 North Union 54
#25 Columbus International 41 at #1 Harvest Prep 86

Looks like all home teams will win in bracket 2 but you never know.

Round 1 complete. Here are the Sectional Finals on Saturday 3/1.

#9 West Jefferson at #6 Grandview Hts
#22 Mount Gilead at #2 Worthington Christian
#16 Fredericktown at #3 Johnstown
#10 Columbus Ready at #8 Marion Pleasant

Bracket 2 going to Ohio University

#23 Madison Plains at #7 Columbus Africentric
#12 Wellington School at #4 Columbus Academy
#14 North Union at #11 Amanda Clearcreek
#26 Utica at #1 Harvest Prep

A few interesting matchups in the Sectional Finals.
West Jefferson/Grandview Hts should be a good game with the former Mid State Ohio rival renewed.
Ready/Marion Pleasant also a good matchup. Ready plays a monster regular season schedule and Pleasant is the always playing its best at tourney time.
Wellington School at Columbus Academy will see the Mid State Cardinal vs Mid State Ohio clash. Academy should win but its tourney time
North Union/Amanda should be a good match up. Have heard good things about Amanda and North Union plays in the tough Central Buckeye Conference. Unfortunately the winner has Harvest Prep in the District Semi Finals.

Columbus 1

Johnstown Monroe #3 seed vs Grandview Heights #6 Seed

Johnstown won the 1st game 56-35. They look like a great defensive team. Anything change from the 1st go around that the result will be different this time?

Grandview didn't have Lachey the last game which is like 17ppg a game missing. For some reason over past couple of years Johnstown has had Grandview's number. This game will be interesting and probably low scoring.

A little more context on Luke Lachey of Grandview, for our NW Ohio readers: he is the son of former Buckeye Jim Lachey. 6’6”, 245 and can move! His brother is a tight end at BGSU.

Africentric and Bates will be good in the next couple years with his underhanded recruiting tactics. Go Nubians! Must be learning from the great girls coach that they got over there.

1st meeting was the finals of the Bobcat Classic at Grandview Hts. Grandview was down 2 starters in Lachey (illness) and Cincione (injury). Johnstown has won the last 2 matchups between these 2 teams-both in the finals of Bobcat Classic- 2018 and 2017. Grandview won the finals in 2016.
Johnstown plays great team defense. You earn your points when you play them. On offense Johnstown is led by 6'5 Owenbacher. He gets his points and rest of the team score pitch in 30 points thus usually low scoring games. One of their wins was 30-18.
Grandview has been playing team ball and pretty good defense during the tourney run. Teams seems to be trying to lock down Lachey in the middle and hope the guards are not hitting in the tourney- so far the formula has not been successful.
It will be interesting to see what is each teams plan to shut down the other.
Let the big men gets theirs and shut the rest or try and stop the big men and let the others score.

Both teams are not one man teams. Johnstown has forward Lusk that is capable of taking over a game. He was big in the 4th quarter of their win in the District Semi-Finals. Grandview Hts has 2 other proven scorers and had a had bench player hit 3 huge 3 pointers in its District Semi-Final.

Should be a great game. It will be interesting to see this as the 1st game at Battelle Hall. Hope there is great crowd.

The 2nd game of the night should also be interesting with Harvest Prep vs Columbus Academy.

Harvest Prep is the overwhelming favorite but having seen Columbus Academy twice this year- they are very good. I think if Columbus Academy can keep Harvest Prep from jumping out to a big early lead this game will go the down to the wire. Harvest Prep seems to burying teams early and coast- so a good start by Academy is important.

Thank you for the information.

As a fan it is always fun to look ahead.....players/coaches can take it one game at a time.

2 excellent District Championship Games.

Central 1 District going to Bowling Green

Grandview Hts 54 Johnstown Monroe 49.

Grandview Hts battled and clawed their way to a victory. The Bobcats did not get a lead til 3 minutes left in the 4th was able to hit critical free throws to get the win. Johnstown led by 7 at half thanks to being able to hit 6 3's in the 1st half. Johnstown seemed poised to answer everyone of Grandview Hts runs til late in the fourth quarter.

Lachey, Day and Collier were the big scorers for Grandview but the play of guard Cincione was the unsung hero by able to keep the Bobcat offense moving.

Johnstown was led by Hazelbakker, Foe and Sayer. Hazelbaker is a handful because of the way he can handle the ball and drive to get his shot.

Great game and Good Crowd.

Central 2 District going to Ohio University

Harvest Prep 71 Columbus Academy 67

This game was back and forth and a game of 6-10 point runs. Harvest would get by 8 or 10 and Academy make a run to get back within 2. Academy got a couple of leads in the 4th quarter but was unable to stop Harvest Prep from taking the lead back. Hines for Harvest Prep was the money man this night. He make shot after shot when Harvest Prep needed it.

Turning point in game was Academy took 2 point 4th quarter 62-60 lead and Harvest Prep missed a shot and Academy got the rebound and looked to be going down for a easy score to go up 4 but Academy turned it over and Hines for Harvest Prep hit a 3 pointer to give Harvest Prep a 1 point lead 63-62. Academy did not able to get the lead again after that .

Great Game and also a good crowd.
