Cardinal Mooney (1-3) at Boardman (3-1)

Not sure what to expect from this one. Mooney has played a very tough schedule so far but from what I hear the talent isn't there right now as in years past but they always play the Spartans tough with their ground and pound game. Boardman looking to bounce back after losing to Big Red.

It's HOF night for Boardman as Evan Beard and Steve Vallos, two former greats on the gridiron are among the ones being inducted along with former basketball star Terence Dials. Looking forward to the matchup as always!

Tough game to peg. I think Mooney is going to catch fire the second half of the season and make the playoffs, hopefully it doesn't start until after next week though. No one has really dented Boardman too much on the ground, sans the 85 yard run by the fullback from Big Red at the end of last Fridays game. Question will be if the front 8 at Boardman can hold up in the trenches and contain the Mooney ground game. Lots of celebration on the Boardman side this weekend, hopefully it doesn't lead the team to come out flat. Should be tight. Hopefully everyone gets and stays healthy. Losing Ieraci killed us right at the pivotal moment last week.

Meanwhile, I'm going to go back on the BHS Facebook alumni page and laugh my off some more at the guys who think Ignazio should be fired based off of Fridays game and how Ogilvie would have been 10-0 at Boardman every year....LOL

What was the celebration for on the Boardman side this weekend and why would they come out flat for the Mooney game? Boardman's defensive line played tough against Big Red but still gave up an average 4.2 yards per carry excluding the 86 yard run for a TD (total rushing plays for BR: 37 carries for 237 yards, 6,4 average). However, many runs were held to no gain or minimal yardage. Good luck to the Spartans this weekend.

Mooney wins this game then they will get into week 11, their schedule weakens dramatically after this.

I think the key is how Mooney's defense can handle Boardman's passing. Steubenville was able to stop the pass with a great front 4 that not only had size but speeed and a blitz that put pressure on O'Horo all night. Jackson and Howland rarely got near O'Horo and he picked them apart when needed. And both of those teams had good size up front and probably were bigger than Boardman. It was the size/speed combination that gave boardman fits.

Unless Mooney gets consistent pressure on O'Horo, I like Boardman in this one. I haven't seen enough of Mooney to really say whether they have a front 4 capable of doing that.

I don't know enough about Mooney to say either. Especially their skill positions.

Is Mooney worse than last year ? Or was the schedule that tough early on that it's hard to read ? I know Page is a decent QB.

Steve Vallos is currently helping out in some capacity at Wake Forest I think. How long do they usually wait to induct athletes? Just curious since presumably my cousin would be inducted at some point.

Looks to be about 15 years for the truly special ones. This one heavy on 2002 grads.

2002 class was a pretty good one in all sports. Football was very good and if not for Ignatius and Harding in the same region, likely goes much deeper in the playoffs. I think they were a top 5 caliber team in D-1.

I believe baseball ended up AP #1 for regular season, but were upset in regionals by Glen Oak. And Softball team made it to state that year.

Other than girls basketball, Boardman had a good run at the beginning and end of that decade athletically. Worst stretch in the middle part from 03-06...

Not a lot of posters from Mooney, Poland, Canfield, Campbell, etc.
Interest is waning across the board, not sure why.
Perhaps boredom has set in.

Good luck Spartans!!

...well there aren't a lot of us, but I'm here! The Cards have played some real good competition (Columbus DeSales, Hoban-who could win state again, and Akron St. V's) but the losses stem from turning the ball over at an embarrassing rate. Just this past week when they lost to St. V's over in Akron, (1) bad pick thrown and 3 fumbles (1) went 80 yards the other way and no high school team can win when they commit that many turnovers. Mooney has a great O line and can move the ball pretty well, but week after week they find a way to shoot themselves in the foot. I'm hoping this week, they put together a 4 quarter error free game and not put the ball on the ground, or else chances of making the playoffs will be nearly impossible.

...if you look closely, I'm the frozen guy about the forty yard line who stayed for both games that day. Dammm it would have been great for the SVC to bring home 2 state titles that day.

ps: Boardman got robbed in that game!

You'll see Boardman get robbed in this video lol at about 9:55 (right after Boardman took a 7-0 lead)...

Anyways, this game scares me because Mooney always excels on the offensive and defensive lines and that is where Boardman is generally successful. As SV said, it will come down to O'Horo being able to run the offense against this defense. And whoever turns the ball over less, as usual.

Heads up for everyone. Game is at 7:30 (not 7), and one Bernie Kosar will be signing books at 6:30 at the stadium. Lots of festivities planned this weekend.
