Didn't they exclude Stark County in the PeeDee's rankings in years past?

Hmmm. Ignatius plays 4 of the top 11 in this thoroughly researched list.

Wasn't last year when they had a statewide poll and tried to have statewide coverage? It was a miserable failure to the detriment of the neo smaller schools. Lousy coverage.

Agree. Looks like they decided to stick to an expanded NEO, which makes sense.

Well definitely don't deserve any recognition until we accomplish something on the field. Kinda suprised no Glen Oak, definitely a top 25 team in NEO

No Glenville at all? Could the Tarblooders lose a Senate game?

My guess is Trumbull and Stark are now included to sell more papers. We'd always gotten the PD in Warren growing up, albeit a slightly different version.

The only problem is I'm not sure how many Warren residents still care enough to actually pick up and read a newspaper.

Rare to see the season begin with a game between the #1 and #3 rated teams.

I find this a little strange myself. Definitely more than a couple teams I think Glenville would beat on this list. I guess we shall see!

I'm pretty confident GlenOak would beat at least a couple of these teams.

Akron East better than Massillon? Barberton better than WGH?

Put Down The Bong

You and I have basically the same post, Mr. Jackson. Barberton and Akron East are better than GlenOak? And Massillon is now playing about even with Woodridge?

Makes us at #1 meaningless.

I can give you all some insight and hopefully answer speculation about everything.

-First, I was against the statewide Top 25 last year. It was part of a company-wide push for more state coverage. You might remember a weekly Monday column that included the traditional Top 25 last year.

-Adding Stark County isn't to sell newspapers. It's simply to include the whole Northeast District. The traditional Top 25 included our seven-county coverage area. Stark County, Warren and Youngstown areas were not part of that.

-Admittedly, my knowledge of those areas is not great just yet. Take the GlenOak question. Didn't get to see them this month, so I'll admit to just dropping the ball on that one.

-We saw about 40 teams this month to shape the Top 25. I saw about 30 schools in the first three weeks of camp. That shaped and changed this Top 25, which in the past was unveiled in a daily countdown. I was even higher on Barberton in July. Same with Massillon, and I will say I think Woodridge and Massillon are close after watching the Tigers scrimmage Avon and attending a Woodridge practice. Call me crazy if you want.

-Lastly, I'm gonna bust my butt to give NEO the best football and hoops coverage that I can. I hope that shows in this Top 25 with the breakdowns, links and videos that give you a glimpse into the teams and players. I know the coverage has taken a hit and had its ups and downs, but know you have someone there who values the HS coverage without a motive for using it as a stepping stone.

Feel free to drop me a line with ideas or complaints.

Matt

I loved the system you used for your rankings versus the state wide approach. Great job and your efforts and hard work are greatly appreciated by an Erie, Pa guy that just loves going each week to a NEO HS football game. The more info I can get, the better decision I can make each week picking what game to travel to see. Thanks again Matt Goul.

Thanks for the writeup! I think including the Stark and Mahoning Valley teams is a great idea, since there are so many games between them and the traditional Cleveland-Akron area teams.

You might not be wrong about GlenOak/Massillon/Ytown teams/etc. -- there are question marks hanging above most of them at this point. It could very well be that Massillon ends up being the best D2 team in the county but is relatively mediocre overall, and that WGH isn't very good this year. Preseason is just that. We'll know more soon obviously.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks! Mooney was the team reluctantly left out. All the preseason reports were great, but it's hard to tell. They play Euclid shorthanded, but of course Euclid sat its standouts. Plus you're only getting a 20-play sample with most first-stringers.

Interested to see how Glenville comes out Friday night vs. Euclid. Through the spring and early summer, I heard they were down. Now that tune is starting to change.

So nice PD, no S 5,6,7 teams mentioned. They could have at least made two polls.

I have always suggested a boxing style pound-for-pound type ranking in HS football; would create some cool debate and generate more clicks to a site. If I was Matt I would look at a ranking package like this>

Top 10 Div I & II

Top 10 Div III & IV

Top 10 Div V, VI, VII

Top 20 Pound for Pound

Rankings should not come out until week 3. Pre-Season rankings for high school is a huge guess. I was talking to several parents of kids who are playing for some of the top 10 schools on this list. Several had concerns because of injuries that their school may be 5-5 at the end of the season and miss the playoffs. Wait for week 3 to rate the teams.
