Week 4: StV (3-0) vs. Mooney (1-2)

The Irish laid an egg in this game last year. What are your thoughts on the matchup this week?

"They usually struggle against Mooney" is one of the greatest understatements I've seen on Yappi in a while!

This game could be a problem for the Irish. As mentioned, Mooney always gives SVSM a hard time, even in some years where the Irish seemed to have superior talent. Also, SVSM is very young and the Hoban game looms on the horizon as a possible distraction. I still don't have a real feel for this SVSM team, but the next two weeks should really provide some guidance.

SVSM 24-7.

They have been dominant the last couple times at home against Mooney. It's in Youngstown where they struggle.

Mooney's 4th grade offense is disgustingly bad. If the Irish can't defend that, they don't deserve to win. The Cardinal defense will bend but not break. And as usual they will get no favors at Green Street.

"Mooney's fourth grade offense"

I'd love for Niles, Howland, Canfield, Poland, Struthers and Girard play them year in and year out...the only one looking like a 4th grader would be Mooney's opponent

That 4th grade offense worked just fine when they had guys like McCarthy, Beachum, Zorich and the like!

You have to develop an offense with the personal you have & no offense to those current Cardinals, but they do not resemble those 3 names listed above nor the other players they played alongside. A little imagination and planning could go along way with this team instead of running the QB 25 to 40 times a game because your opponent just might figure out a way to stop it!

You could also lump most publics in the state in that mix.

I disagree. I think the only school on that list with an offense nearly as bad as Mooney's would be Niles.

The others all take far more chances and try much different things than Mooney would ever dream of.

I would've thrown Boardman in that mix but our new coordinator has taken care of that problem. Boardman doesn't have a large senior class, but I was absolutely floored when I saw Mooney had an even smaller one. I know enrollment is shrinking but it didn't seem like it was affecting football as much. Could be worse, could be Ursuline. Guess all those 7th graders never panned out lol

I would have agreed last year as well. That was awful.

There are are lots of reasons why both parochials are hurting enrollment wise and athletic wise.

Merging makes sense, which is why it'll never happen.

Let's see...two years go you were complaining because our top offensive weapon wasn't getting enough touches. According to you, all we had to do was make sure he got his opportunities and the offensive would have clicked.

Fast forward to this year. Our top offensive weapon is our quarterback. Every play starts with his hands on the ball. You should be happy as a pig in slop, but NO. Now using our top offensive threat as much as possible is the completely wrong strategy.

You have probably witnessed our two scrimmages and our three games to date. Tell me, who would you rather have as the focus of our offense with the personnel you have seen?

I've listened to 2 complete games on the radio

That's enough to tell me that the offense is as bad as ever

what do you think?

You can't be that predictable. Not against this schedule.

That QB, who plays both ways, will be hurt by the end of the year running 20+ times a game. It's not about the focus, it's about moving the ball around and mixing things up. Developing other options.

...2 years ago we were talking about a talented wide receiver like Armstrong not getting enough passes thrown his way, went totally under utilized, and not a quarter back getting hit down after down! There is a huge difference!

Ask any high school, college, pro coach in the country and they will all agree that your QB should not be running the ball over 30 times a game. I have no problem with Page handing off, throwing multiple times, but running it that many times as well as playing every down on defense is asking for problems. I will never disagree that Page is special & as he goes...so do the Cards, but if he goes down, who will step up? The answer is nobody! We've played the last 2 weeks and # 7 a pounding full back has zero touches. He's a fullback let him get you tough yards, it doesn't have to be Page every freak'ng down!

Honestly..... people think you need to go to a game to know that Mooney is running the same novocaine offense they've been running for the last 12 years?

No one is reinventing the offensive wheel over there on Erie Street. The last time I remember any sort of real creativity and change was probably the state title game in 2009 and before then the game at Green Street in 2007. That's been a long time now. For better or worse the recipe is and has been bland offense a good defense and good special teams. Problem is the last few years or so the defense hasn't been as good and the special teams have been a complete mess.
