2017 Surprises

Three weeks in, what are the surprises around Ohio high school football?

This can be a team that has struggled historically starting out hot or traditionally strong programs that have dipped a bit this year.

Feel free to also post about players who have come out of nowhere to put up big numbers so far.

Glenville would be a surprise so far this year. Some were talking about them having a possibility of challenging TCC after dropping down to Div III Region 10 but after going 0-3 and being out scored 42-118 in their run through traditional Division I OOC opponents they may not have enough points to qualify for the playoffs even if they go undefeated in Cleveland Senate play.

SW Ohio- Fairmont, Beavercreek, Belmont come to mind. Centerville too but I don't know if you can consider them a surprise since they have been here before.

Thomas Worthington is 3-0, so that's a surprise.

Newark Catholic is 0-3; that, too, is a surprise.

Normandy being 3-0 to start off the season. Coming into the season, riding a 41 game losing streak, expectations weren't the highest.

But their head coach, Brian Darden has done an impressive job so far this season, and the team has responded.

I don't know if they can keep up this hot start, but either way, the Invaders have a very promising future ahead, despite only having two seniors on their roster.

Another good surprise is Twinsburg, who has had some very bad years, but started to turn things around at the end of last season, beating eventual state final four participant Hudson. They could very well be 3-0 this year if not for a close loss to Solon.

I can see the Tigers making the playoffs this year.

Another pleasant surprise is Kenston. They've always had some pretty decent teams, but this is their first 3-0 start in, possibly, their school's history. The way things are going, they might possibly run the table this year and their only test will be against Chardon on October 20th. They have a couple of young guys that are stepping up in a big way. I don't know if they'll be the #1 in Region 9, but they will definitely be a threat.

One more is Lutheran East. Also off to a 3-0 start. They went 6-4 last season, and I'm curious to find out if they'll be playoff bound this year.

I'd would agree with all of these. Normandy might even be able to start off 4-0 versus a beatable Valley Forge. Traditionally Lutheran East really gets roughed up, so it is nice to see them having some success.

I would add from the NEO area Aurora 0-3. The schedule is tough, but have to try and squeak at least 1 out.

University School, also has a pretty tough couple of losses, but I thought they were going to be a lot better than what they have shown thus far. Especially with the talent they have at QB.
