AT&T wants to overhaul HBO, says it isnít profitable enough

Quote:
AT&T has been the proud owner of HBO for less than a month, and it is already considering an overhaul that would see HBO produce more video that can compete for the attention of smartphone users. AT&T wants to boost revenue both in advertising and subscriptions, even if that means upending HBO's longtime strategy of producing a relatively small number of high-quality shows.

John Stankey, an AT&T executive who is now CEO of the company's WarnerMedia division, formed after last month's acquisition of Time Warner Inc., described his vision in an hourlong "town hall meeting" with 150 employees. Audio of the meeting was obtained by The New York Times.

"It's going to be a tough year," Stankey said, according to the Times article. "It's going to be a lot of work to alter and change direction a little bit."

I subscribe to HBO precisely because of those high-quality shows. Their stuff is very well written as well as well acted. They don't seem to do anything on the cheap.
If AT&T cheapens the programming, it'll immediately be noticeable -- and I'll sadly say goodbye to HBO.

Bingo to all above.

Just add one more thing in my life to get ruined in the name of profitability.

As MonclovaSteve said, I watch HBO for GOT, Westworld, and Barry. That is it.

The movie industry has been killed because kids with smartphones dominate the target audience. But it is not just kids with smartphones in the US it is kids with smartphones in the Far East and India. Now the movie industry will not produce anything of substance and quality because they target these folks and have to keep them in constant attention (Think Fast & Furious and every Dwayne Johnson movie - all explosions and chases).

The movie industry has been killed? What are you basing that off of?

Action movies have been around forever.

I've been saying all along, Game of Thrones would look much better designed for a 2in by 2in screen.

Someone tell me what the hell they're getting at with that? Compete for smartphone? What's that mean? Interactive?

I'm sure they will achieve their goals but it will definitely suck watching the quality nosedive, like AMC post-Mad Men/Breaking Bad

If they think this will make it more profitable and they succeed, more power to them, can't hate on that. But I suspect it will have the exact opposite effect.

This reeks of the new management feeling like they have to put their stamp on things to prove their worth. "Video that can that can compete for the attention of smartphone users" sounds so much like out of touch board room speak that it borders on parody.

Thanks Ronnie...lol

The difference in today's world is most comedies and dramas of yesteryear would not get the funding to be made. Think Shawshank or True Romance. You know? Movies with great casts, acting, dialogue, story, etc...

China and India push our movie market now.

Both of those movies are excellent. Shame many Millennials have never seen/heard of them.

Businesses is in business to make money so they can pay their employees and shareholders.
That's not greed, it's survival.
Mellenials are watching Netflix and Hulu. I'm shocked people still pay for movie channels. We just had a free weekend of HBO and Cinemax and the programming was crap.

Oh look, the Bobbsey Twins are ganging up on me....Oh No!

I never said millennials did not know The Shawshank Redemption. I said that movies like that no longer get funded. We are outnumbered now. The article I cited above drives executives decisions on what direction they want to go. More Fast & Furious type movies and less Three Billboards. They LOVE comic book movies as well (Marvel/DC). As a cult classic Super Troopers finally got funding 15 years later. Look for that to not even happen in the future. The major studios will go after the largest audience which is no longer us. Hopefully you millennials are keeping up.

My millennial offspring like many of the same movies and music that their old parents enjoy. As grandparents we also like a lot of the Pixar and Marvel movies the grandkids like.

There are obviously some differences and preferences but in our world one genre does not have to be pitted against another.

So do mine, unlike Neo they actually have style and a sense of humor.

You missed the point though. The United States matters less. It does not matter. Our media is now catering to a larger market. Neopolitan can like the band Hansen all he wants but it will remain niche as long as China is dominating.

The technology for VR is basically here... Someone just needs to get a GOT blockbuster out there.
