He Played the Guitar Just Like a Ringing a Bell

It is with deep sadiness that I learned today of the passing of Chuck Berry at the age of 90. I was in St. Louis a few years ago and just missed out on hearing him play live at his club.

He was one of the last original rockers. I think that only Little Richard is left, although maybe some of the boy singers of the era are still alive.

Rest in peace Chuck. You inspired a legion of rock stars and will coninue to do so as long as young want-to-be rockers pick up guitars.

Like John Lennon once said "If you didn't call it Rock N Roll, you might as well call it Chuck Berry."

Legend

My suspision was correct, Little Anthony of the Imperials is still alive and performing. There are still quite a few of the Do wop era singers still alive but they came around in the late fifties. Of the original early to mid fifties rock and roll stars, there are very few still alive.

Hail hail Rock and Roll!

My mistake; the Imperial's first hit was 1957, making them of the same vintage of Dion and the other Do-wop artists. So Little Richard may be the last of the founders of Rock and Roll from the early to mid-fifties.

When I heard the news, my first thought was of him appearing in "American Hot Wax", in the concert finale with Jerry Lee Lewis.

When I first saw that movie, I remember thinking that moviegoers definitely had to suspend reality to believe this was Berry and Lewis in 1960 - Chuck was 51 at the time (which was ancient to me), and Lewis about 41.

Another rocker's tribute:

Great history lesson. Not being an axe man myself, I could feel the differences over the years but I could not understand how each style came about or how they were distinctively different. Thanks

One of the saddest facts of his life is "My Ding-A-Ling" was his biggest hit. I mean the guy never toured with a band because literally every musician knew all his tunes and how to play them so he would just get a local group together in each town to play a show yet this dopey song is what sold more than any other.

Dude liked to jam though and was always up for a gig with a vareity of acts so he could spread his gospel.

Wow! What a line-up! Yeah, I was hoping no one would mention that one song.

The look on Chuck Berry's face was one of the best things I've seen in a while.

Our high school's administration removed the entire jukebox from our school cafeteria because "My Ding-A-Ling" and Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" were getting too much playing time...complete with student sing-a-longs, of course. Why not just remove those two records if they were unacceptable?

Preacher does that teaching, reaching back further to steel guitars ( I believe) and early blues in Mississippi (as I recall). Been awhile since I heard him, forgot his name. Of course that doesn't mean HE was the original either.

It was pretty amazing listening to him jump the generations, showing how one merged into the next.

Edit: Found, Rev Jones. Can't find the clip I really want but here's one. Begin about 3:30 where he shows progression from Blues to Rap.
