Balloonatic gets $26K fine for 'unconscionably stupid' lawn chair flight over Calgary

This kind of reminds me of an episode of "The A Team" but I'm betting most people will think of the movie "Up"

Quote:
In a phony Boston accent, Daniel Boria quoted John F. Kennedy's moon speech and compared himself to the Wright brothers to explain why he tied over 100 helium balloons to a lawn chair and floated four kilometres above Calgary, getting in the way of commercial aircraft and putting hundreds of lives at risk.

Boria, 27, was ordered to pay $26,500 in fines when he was sentenced Friday, after pleading guilty in December to dangerous operation of an aircraft for the 2015 stunt.

''Unconscionably stupid' stunt

"Why climb the highest mountain?" said Boria outside court. "Why 85 years ago fly the Atlantic? Why do the Oilers play the Flames? I chose to fly a chair; not because it is easy but because it is hard. Because that goal served to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills."

Neither - it reminded of of Lawnchair Larry, who did it nearly 35 years ago, but received only a $1500 fine:

This kid Boria's arrogance is astounding. It's one thing to pull a stunt and accept the consequences and move. It's another to flat out say you don't care whether you needlessly inconvenienced or endangered others, and blithely compare yourself to real pioneers.

He apologized, paid his dues, accepted and verbally repeated the fault of his logic and stated he will do it the proper way next time. He was fortunate nothing bad happened and accepts such. I don't think he needs also shove a stick up his azz and castigate himself in shame. A little flightly fun and inspiration is something people need in this grey world. Humor is a survival skill in tough times.
