Ghost in the Shell Trailer 2

Here is the latest trailer to the upcoming Ghost in the Shell movie:

I'm really looking forward to this movie as it's my 3rd favorite Anime movie of all time just behind "Akira" & "Princess Mononoke"! I'm hearing great things coming out of the preview screenings and how can you not like a movie that isn't a sequel, prequel, or Super Hero story.

Why did they cast Scarlet Johansson as the lead?

She seems right for the part as I remember the anime. Who would you have rather seen in it?

BTW, I'm hoping this movie is as inventive as the first Matrix movie was. It has that potential as the anime version is very trippy with a number of powerful scenes. On the other hand this is a story that they could screw-up real easily. Keeping my fingers crossed they got it right.

Lotr sees no issue with Scarlet Johansson playing a character named Motoko Kusanagi.

Lotr is probably waiting for Taylor Swift and her squad to play the Sailor Scouts in a Sailor Moon film adaptation.

No issue what-so-ever! Did you have an issue with Samuel Jackson playing Nick Fury? Did you have an issue with Denzel Washington playing Kikuchiyo in "The Magnificent Seven"?

The original "Ghost" was an anime (cartoon) so I see no problem with crossing racial lines to portray the character. You must be one of those SJW folks who gets upset by the mere thought of "cultural appropriation".

So why again don't you think a white women can play the title character in "Ghost in the Shell" beyond my being an angry white male?

* G & PG rated movies that are outstanding family films. Spirited Away or My Friend Totoro are magical films to watch with young children. The Princes Mononoke is a great adventure to watch with the 10 - 14 age group.

* Hard R rated movies that can be stomach churning. Ghost along with Akira are examples of this and they can be quite intense.

Than there's "Grave of the Fire Flies". One of the saddest movies you will ever see. Haunting is an apt description.

Now I get that anime animation is not everyone's cup of tea and for every good movie there are 100 crap ones. But it's very different to what we get in the states and the originality can be refreshing.

Name: Motoko Kusanagi
Setting: Japan

There are hundreds of Asian women that would kill to play the lead role in this film and they would be staying true to the source material, but instead they cast Scarlett Johansson.

I don't like anime lol I just grew up watching Dragonball Z and have seen snippets on Sailor Moon on social media and my younger sister loved it when she was little. That's about where my knowledge on the art stops.

Why is everything so extreme with you? I'm hardly a "super fan" but I do admire the creative flair of the best anime. Maybe you should broaden your world a bit and actually experience some of that diversity you claim to love so much.

This isn't a Japanese film, it's an American movie. Sure they'll release it all over Asia but from a commercial standpoint it makes sense to cast an American.

The Seven Samurai is one of the greatest and most beloved Japanese films and was set in Japan but it's been remade twice in the US as "The Magnificent Seven" and both times they didn't cast any Japanese in the lead roles. The first version featured Yul Brynner a white guy and in the 2nd version they featured Denzel Washington a black guy. So I'm still confused as to why you don't want Johansson in the role? Seems racist to me.

You really can't figure out why someone would be surprised an Asian actress wasn't cast for a role of an Asian character? That seems pretty stupid to me.

Why should I be surprised? It happens ALL THE TIME in the movies and on TV.

You do seem awfully hung up on the race of the actors in the role as opposed to how well they perform the part.

This is film adaptation of a Japanese manga/anime. For gods sake, the press tour started today in Korea and Japan There's no reason not to stay true to the source material and cast someone who looks like the original main character, is native to the country it's set in, etc.

Casting a white woman in one of the few roles made for an Asian woman is not celebrating diversity.

I never read the comic book Ghost was based on but I did see the anime (cartoon) and while taking place in "Asia" and involving an "Asian" character this was not a uniquely "Asian" or Japanese story. It has a much broader concept.

Now if the source material of a movie was an historical biography about a Japanese women living during the Shogunate period than I would agree with you. But it isn't. The source material is a dystopian science fiction comic book story that was made into a cartoon.

But I just don't get this obsession with the race of the actor. Are you saying that if the source material depicts a character as "white" they can NEVER be played by a person of color? Or if the source material says the character is a man they can never be played by a women (see the two "Starbucks" in the 1979 and more recent Battlestar Galactica series).

So which is more important on the "left": cultural appropriation or racism? It can't be both.
