Don't need to be right near the door and don't worry too much about door dings (most scratches on the car will be of my own making), but I prefer spots where I can pull straight through when I leave. I hate backing out of parking spots.

I would park closest to the entrance as possible, but I worry more about myself (and the kids with me) dinging other cars. One time at Geauga Lake (RIP) my nephew flung the door open like no one business. Gave the car next to us a pristine scratch that matched my car 100% placement and color. I had to move FAR away from that car. Too many fidiots out there wanting to flatten tires or bust your windows

I always park in the back just because it's easier getting in and out of spots. It's also helpful to not have cars to either side of you when one of the kids decides to fling their door open like a maniac.

Same here. I do not live in fear, but believe I am saving myself a bunch of agitation parking far away. Mom used to circle the lot ten times if a slot more than five cars away from the store was not open. Huge waste of time and most of us need the exercise anyway.

Another component of the conversation is what you drive. When I am in my old jeep, short wheel base sharp turning I will park between other vehicles and closer. When I am in my full sized van it turns poorly, is difficult to see low blind spots, and is too wide to slip between many smaller open spots.

By the time my wife finds a "good" spot I've already parked in the outskirts got what I wanted and paid.

Far out and as far away from other cars as possible. Don't want Tyler's kids flinging the door open like maniacs and dinging my ride.

Lots of scared people in this world. If a front spot isn't available, it should only take about 5 seconds to identify that and move on.

What does wanting to keep a car nice have to do with being scared? What kind of POS do you drive?

In the back. Never park near a cart corral, that is suicide.

Also if I see a crappy/beat up car I tend to not park next to it. If they take such poor care of their car, it's unlikely they're going to care about slamming their door into mine. The state of someone's car is unusually indicative of the way they live their life.

2014 Grand Cherokee. What do you think the chances are of your car being dented in a parking lot? 0.001%?

Way way higher. Go ask any body shop. Door dings are the devil. Not only that, in the winter time kids with coats dragging their zippers and such across paint, shoppers by carts...depends on how nice you want to keep your car and for how long.

It's never happened to me in 13 years of driving (knock on wood). I think I'll take my chances as opposed to intentionally go out of my way every single time.

I'm not afraid of my car being dinged, but I always try to park away from the traffic/pedestrians. I don't mind walking, but I hate navigating through parking lots and waiting on people or other cars

Parking lots and gas stations are two of the most dangerous places to drive out there.

While we're talking about parking lots, particular at shopping centers, has anyone noticed how few available good spots are available within, say, 150 feet of the front door? The ones up front are assigned to the handicapped, but the vertical design of the lot insures that most of them get pushed farther back.

Our main shopping center had horizontal parking in the 1960's thru the 1970's, so there were more available spaces within a given radius.

And while we're talking about parking, what is it with malls and stores assigning additional up-front spaces to pregnant mothers, mothers with kids, and mothers in general? I've always wondered if there were any legal teeth behind those signs. They're not official state of Ohio signs that I can tell. What's the worse that could happen if I, a miserable curmudgeon of a male, parked there?

Unless it's raining or something, I generally park wherever. I don't need to have the closest spot and I don't really fret over my car getting dinged.

On the right side, about halfway back.

Where I live, the second option is almost NEVER an option. There are a lot of great things about living in the SF Bay area (weather, proximity to a lot of really cool parts of the country, etc), but one of the things I HATE about it is how crowded it is. And I mean ALL the time. If a place is worth going to around here (and that even includes places like parks), you are going to be hunting for a parking spot and you'll take whatever you can get - near, close, whatever.

At the grocery store, right next to the cart canal, does not matter how far away that is. Will also look for a spot where I can drive thru so I do not have to back out.

Sporting events, typically near a light usually the first one I see. Once again, I don't mind walking so it does not matter how close to the entrance.

Thank goodness you're a devout Catholic!! If you weren't, God wouldn't let you get away with these sorts of statements.

Please point out the post where I said I was devout. Preeeeetty sure I've said repeatedly while I have a strong faith in God and I know He exists, I'm a sinner and don't walk the true path. You must have missed that part.

PS I'm not even Catholic.

I'm a piece of work because I was saved and backslid but still have a healthy respect for God? Huh. I guess I could be a good agnostic Catholic and profess Jesus to be "just a man" or maybe say I'm the son of God like a couple others.

I may not be a practicing Christian, or a practicing Catholic... but I'll tell something else I'm not... worried about what luke warm fence riders think about me.
