As a horror movie junkie, I come across a lot of off beat Horror movies as well as the run in the mill straight to video. I will share my thoughts of the ones that I see this month. So, if you seen a movie new or old and want to share your thoughts go ahead, and if its horror, even better!!!!
I will edit in my horror views here with my rating scale on how I liked it.....
8 = Donnie Darko
7 = Excellent !!!!!
6 = Great
5 = pretty Good
4 = OK/Good
3 = not good
2 = Bad
1 = Unwatchable
Nice send off for Hugh Jackman playing the character. Not as great as it could have been, but certainly the best solo outing for Wolverine. It had some pacing issues (ti's about 10-15 minutes too long) and the villain's are a little lackluster. Tough to go into too much more detail without spoilers.
Horror: A couple of American girls travel to Jerusalem. What started out as a fun trip ends up a battle for survival when something supernatural occurs in the city. Not found footage but shot like one as we see the whole thing through the special glasses of one of the girls. It is what it is.... 4.0/8
Kaiju: "GMK Giant Monsters All-Out Attack". This one ignores all other Godzilla movies but the first as well as other Kaiju films. Godzilla returns raged by vengeful souls of those in the Pacific wronged by the Japanese Empire and is up to the 3 guardians (King Gidorah, Mothra, and Baragan) to protect Japan. Godzilla is really evil in this one as the body count escalates but I did not like that they re-invented the other Kaiju's making them weak compared to Godzilla.... 3.0/8
Horror: 2 Scientists and a Psychic investigate a New Zealand farmhouse after a family flees in terror stating that it is haunted. I watched this late at night with all the lights off and surround sound turned up. I will admit that this one got to me. Great experience.... 6.5/8
Cementerio General (Peru-2013)
Horror: A group of kids head out to the cemetery late at night and mess with a Ouija Board. Well, nothing good happens from that. This one did not know if it wanted to be a found footage film or not so it was all over the place with how it was filmed. They should of decided on one way or another as the way they did it ruined the atmosphere. Supposedly the first horror movie from Peru ... 2.5/8
Horror: An American traveling abroad needs to make extra cash and agrees to try an experimental new gaming system that plays on ones fears. This one was from the Black Mirror series. I felt the lead was annoying... 4.5/8
Viggo Mortensen is a father of six who lives in wilderness Washington state, off the grid. Home schools his children; teaches them survival skills. His wife, who may or may not have agreed with this approach to the kid raising (did at one time, maybe lost her enthusiasm for it), dies while with her parents in New Mexico. The family re-enters civilization to deal with her death.
I know some people like the main character...not the wilderness part, but home schoolers who have opted out of society in many ways. I wonder what they would think of this character and the portrayal. The home-schoolers I know are ultra-conservative. The Viggo character seems to get his political philosophy from the left.
Overall...I'd give this movie a B. It starts very well, but the character motivation and script seem to lose a little steam along the way.
Horror: A family that hunts vampires suspects that there is one in town. Atmospheric but cheezy and boring... 3.0/8
Most Likely To Die (US-2015)
Horror: Somebody is slashing up old classmates at a 10 year reunion party. Oh yes, it is a slasher film. The killer was pretty sweet but once again we suffer from character stupidity. Hello, somebody is slashing up people and yet you guys are still go off on your own???? Middle of the pack.... 4.0/8
Babbett's Feast (1987) (Danish) - Excellent film. Subtitles are not a distraction. The theme of the joy life and the ability of food and fellowship to elevate people in many ways. Best foreign language film of 1987.
Horror/Suspense: Black Mirror: Shut Up And Dance took me for a ride and then toyed with my emotions turning them on themselves and leaving me overwhelmed but amazed at what I had just experienced. I love that they are toying with the horror genre.... WOW, ... 7.0/8
Horror: Ghost story adapted from MR James. A scholar finds a paper detailing the mysterious death of an Archdeacon while at the Barchester Cathedral. I've really liked the other MR James stories but this one was a bit boring.... 3.0/8
Horror: A young woman returns to her hometown to realize that many have left and those that remain live in fear of a vampire. Not to bad for a 50's vampire story from Mexico.... 5.0/8
El ata˙d del Vampiro (Mexico-1958)
Horror: The Vampire has found Marta and wants her for himself.... I actually started watching this one first and about 20 minutes in realized that it must be a sequel so I stopped and found the first one "Vampiro" watched it and then came back to this one. Not nearly as good as the first and did not care for the tongue and cheek humor that was thrown in.... shame!!!! ... 3.0/8
Fun action movie that you don't have to wait until Summer for. They do a good job of telling a concise story while also giving the characters, as well as Kong and the Island itself, sufficient backstory to not just make it a dumb popcorn blockbuster.
Horror: A couple travel to a remote moor to try and capture a cat like beast on film. Well, that was what I was thinking but it makes a turn and ends up being about something else which turned it into crap.... 2.0/8
The Blood Lands (UK-2014)
Horror: A UK couple buys a run down farmhouse in a small town on the Scottish border and has to deal with intruders on the first night... 4.0/8
Horror: "A Candle for the Devil" ... Two old fashioned sisters run a bed and breakfast in Spain and frown upon the young women who act in ways against their morals. Well, one sister believes she has a mission and must deal with these woman in any means necessary. This was the Uncut version that had all the goodies!!!! .... 5.5/8
SciFy Horror: A crew makes a discovery on their last day of the mission that changes everything. I really enjoyed it. Still not sure if this was a remake or not.... 6.0/8
Los Parecidos (Mexico-2015)
Horror: 1968, a Mexican bus stop, people are waiting to leave for the city but a strange rain storm changes their plans. They become restless, paranoid, and unaware of the strange events that will soon consume them. This was definitely influenced by the "Twilight Zone". I did not care for the first 40 minutes but the 2nd half was worth the watch... 4.0/8
