Louisville debates return to Federal League

Quote:
Calling it the best of two bad options, the Louisville Leopards are leaning toward seeking a spot in the Federal League.

During a two-hour school board work session Thursday, Louisville High School Principal Ken Faye and Athletic Director John Twinem recommended that Louisville seek to join the seven schools in the Federal League - McKinley, Jackson, GlenOak, Hoover, Perry, Green and Lake - versus not joining a new athletic conference.

They would be admitted in a heartbeat.

I'm guessing they would be admitted but is it the right decision for Louisville? That's an awfully big conference to be a much smaller school. Too bad they are so far away from the Suburban League because they would be a good fit.

I'm guessing these numbers are a year old. It's from a blog posted last March.

Yes, ideally the Suburban (small) would be a great fit, but going to Aurora and Richfield would be awful. Sounds like they feel they would be forgotten in Stark Co. in that case as well.
I personally feel they would be much more competitive than most people do. They play bigger than their enrollment.

Agreed. The SL American is already too stretched out. It may work for some varsity sports but the the travel time for the lower levels and for sports that play right after school, it would be a nightmare.

It's really too bad because the SLA really needs an 8th team and Louisville would be perfect except for it's location.

Awful? really? 1 hour to Aurora and 50 minutes to Revere? So getting into a league you can compete in all sports vs. one that you will compete in only a few makes a lot more sense. A little extra travel time and expense is not a terrible thing if the fit is better and the fit is for sure much MUCH better

Going to Hinkley would be terrible too, and then trying to create rivalries with teams that have really never meant anything to Louisville before...not very exciting.

Sounds like they are really second guessing themselves on the Independent journey.

Unfortunately no one in Louisville cares about playing Revere, Highland, Copley, Tallmadge, Kent, Aurora, etc. Louisville may struggle a bit, but the Fed teams are who they want as a measuring stick, not Summit and Portage Co teams. It would be an exciting, new challenge for them. The Fed has a lot of respect for Louisville.

The expense is more than you think...in a conversation with some people at GlenOak...they were told Green has cut transportation costs by joining the Fed by $300,000. If you factor in middle school along with high school girls and boys sports...that number could happen.

Also they would be like Boardman was to the Fed. Lake went to Boardman every other year for football and usually got back around 12:30 in the morning after the football game....Boardman had to make the trip to Stark County at least 3 to 4 games a year....that makes for a long evening and then turning around to do Saturdays ready work for the next game on the schedule.

It's not just the varsity sports, and further the "big ticket" varsity sports. You also have the Tuesday night 9th/JV/VAR girls volleyball trips to consider.

Exactly. They would be miserable and get tired of it after a few years. For now it's either Fed or independent.

Still wish something could've been done with a new league with Louisville, Dover, New Philly, Wooster, CCC, etc.

NCL has around an hour drive for some of the schools with traffic, and it still works. (Hoban/Walsh to Lake Catholic)

And for whoever mentioned rivalries, Hoban and St V are still a huge rivalry and they always play non-conference. You don't need to be in the same conference to be rivals.

That said, the Fed is still the only option I see really for the Leps.

My understanding is that Wooster did not or could not give a definitive yes for the league talk....which was part of the talks stalling.

Louisville can consolidate with East Canton to bump enrollment.

OR wait until new projections come out because my gut feeling is that the number of students who left our district because of the strike will drop us to D2 in all athletics. No confirmed numbers on this, just my hunch.

If this is the case, really bad move on Wooster's part as the OCC continues to expand more to the west and south for them. Not sure what other schools could've been added to get that league to 7 or 8 teams though, regardless.

Nordonia

Louisville is in a tough spot, but given that the Fed teams need extra indie games in their small league, why not just use the smaller 4 Fed teams as the basis of an indie schedule ?

Adding East Canton's 89 boys STILL would leave us as the smallest school, but it would bring us almost even with Lake. The big question would be if East Canton insisted on renaming the team the Louisville Hornets.

Go all in and call them the ECL Leopard-Hornets. Give local artists some drugs and have a logo contest. A leopard hornet would frighten me.

The enrollment numbers are taken the first week of October. The strike began about 4 weeks later.

East Canton wouldn't, but at a time of levy woes, there was talk of dissolving the Osnaburg Local SD. In that case, Osnaburg would've been split between Louisville, Minerva, and Canton South.
