Solon Comets girls' hoops 2016-2017

I know that many of you have been waiting for a Solon girls' thread. Hurri-Comet was Solon's girls' basketball fan. With his passing, I suppose it falls to me to carry on the tradition. Unfortunately, I'm not a girls' hoops maven like Hurri. I'm more of a football-baseball guy. But I'll do my best. I haven't been to any girls' games yet; I believe the Comets are 2-1 so far. I'll try to get to some. I also hope that another Solon fan can take up the gauntlet, like Denbigfish did last year, and help me out, because I believe he does go to all the games.

I can assure everyone that Solon remains a D1 state championship contender. The Comets return all five starters from last year's state semifinal team. Solon also boast a couple of Ms. Basketball contenders in senior guard Dee Bekelja and junior center Valencia Myers.

Go Comets!!!

And please remember: I need beaucoup help keeping this thread going.

Sorry to learn of the passing of Hurri-Comet. I enjoyed the passionate enthusiasm for the Lady Comets. Condolences to family and friends. Will certainly be missed!

Good to hear some chatter from Solon. Good luck on your season. Hope to see you in March!

Was very sorry to hear of his passing. I knew something was amiss when there wasn't a Solon girls hoops thread yet. May he rest easy.

I'll do my best with covering what I can.

Hurri will be missed. It was tough to see him suffering through his trials. But the guy just kept on fighting. RIP Hurri - probably THE most passionate fan I've ever been around.

I'll be keeping an eye on both Solon and Twinsburg. Coach Solis has those girls focused topping both Stow and Wadsworth at their home courts in back to back games this week. The Dec. 23rd game (next Friday) will be an area standout as Solon takes on the Tigers. I will not be there as I'm taking my kids to the Cavs game that night (so what if I miss a house payment....).

This will be a statement game for both. Solon is primed to have a standout year with plenty of experience, athleticism and solid coaching.

Weather permitting I'll try and make it up to that game... Took in the Twinsburg-Stow game... the Tigers defense was on point.

That will be worth the trip McGal. Solon better be ready because I know Twinsburg will.

Solon had no midweek games this week and goes to Shaker tomorrow. Twinsburg has Hudson tomorrow at home and should have no problem. I'll catch that one.

Can't see the long off week for Solon helping them before Twinsburg. Kruse better have those girls ready to play against Twinsburg's defense.

Shaker's down and imho the new coach isn't getting as much out of her talent as she should. She's got the right pieces but they don't seem to be gelling well imho.

I did make it to the Shaker game. I'm so glad denbigfish kept stats, because Shaker's scoreboard doesn't post individual scoring totals like many other schools do. And Sunday's PD had no mention of the game. Shaker wasn't a great team and they turned Saturday's game into a rough-and-tumble affair. Lots of hacking. Lots of loose balls and lots of players diving on the floor for loose balls. At times, Solon played down to Shaker's level. But the Comets can still rain 3's; still make pinpoint passes, and still clog the lane on defense. Because of those things, Solon can still put distance between themselves and a lesser team.

Dee, Valencia and Alexis did their usual stuff. I thought that Katherine Dittoe and Rian Dortch really played well off the bench.

Those sideboards are overrated... the only stat that matters is the team score. Heck I'd like to see the team foul counts taken off of there too because officials look at the relative numbers way too much.

Those Solon girls were on their game tonight! Beat the Tigers by 20 plus. Great job especially the second half..

3rd Qtr Told The Tale

Whatever Coach Kruse shared at half time got the Lady Comets attention with a 30-12 run in the third.

Looks like Twinsburg came out strong up 16-7 after one. Solon came right back with a 18-6 second quarter.

I understand it was a physical game all night. Both teams scoring 15 from the charity stripe.

Bekelja led all scorers with 28, Stover with 15 and Myerrs 14.

Solon goes to 7-1 and heads to Detroit Thursday and Friday for the Motor City Roundball Classic.

Twinsburg stands at 6-3 after a physical week with Gilmour (L), Perrysburg (W) and last nights' Solon. They're off till Friday where they head to Hathaway Brown.

GREAT win by Solon! V was in foul trouble much of the first half. Dittoe and Dortch stepped in and played great. Modkins and Mitchell played great defense, negated T-Burg's strong guard's, and handled the press no problem.
V DOMINATED while she was in.
Stover had a very good all around game.
Bekelja scored whenever Solon really needed a bucket.
Not only are these teams #1 and #2 in cleveland.com but they are pretty bitter next door neighbor rivals. I know Solon and Twinsburg both have big goals remaining through the rest of the season but this was a SWEET win by Solon!

Interesting take considering Bekelja was clearly the main force in Solon winning. V has an effect on every game but your take is pretty biased toward her.

Didn't mean it that way MC. You're right, Dee grinding and battling to make plays the entire game was the key. I have been impressed with Valencia's play thus far. I think she's improved in every facet. There's a long way to go but I think Solon is much better off than they were at this time last year. Not sure what Brian is talking about. I thought Solis' coaching and of course the T-Burg girls effort kept them in the game until the 2nd half.

Motor City Roundball Classic Schedule for Solon.

The Lady Comets head to Michigan and Thursday tip off at 7:20 against the Ann Arbor Huron River Rats....would love to see their mascot lol. Present record is 5-2 overall and 3-0 in their conference and average 51 points a game.

Not much time to rest as Friday at 12:40 they take on the Saginaw Heritage Lady Hawks with a 5-0 overall record and 3-0 in their conference. Last year finished 20-2 I believe. No access to a current roster. Averaging 60 points a game.

Regardless, they will be playing two tough out of state teams before their next league matchup at Brunswick on Wednesday 1/4.

River Rats??? Hope they're not rabid. I wish some of these out-of-state teams were coming to Solon. Then again, playing tough teams in tough environments will only help the Comets come tournament time.

Any word on Solon's opponent in the Classic in the Country?

Lady Comets Corner River Rats 59-54

From the Detroit Roundball Classic. Nip and tuck affair for sure.
Up 12-11 after one. Down 25-28 at the half. Down 39-41 after 3.
Outscored Ann Arbor 20-13 in the 4th.
Final of 59-54 and Dee voted MVP of the game with 31 points.

Way to go Ladies. Rest up - you lace them up again in 14 hours.

Lady Comets Dropped Second Game Of Detroit Roundball Classic

Either not much offense or one helluva defensive battle.

All I got from my source was Saginaw Heritage 38, Lady Comets 35.

Solon's second game in 14 hours may have had something to do with it. On the other end, Saginaw was averaging 60 points a game in the prior 5 contests. Solon must have put a lot of effort in to their defense.

Happy New Year everyone ! Be safe!

Solon off till Wed., Jan 4th at Brunswick at 7:30

Lady Comets definitely have a tough schedule as always. Should have won both in Detroit. First game Dee was a monster and they were able to pull it out. Second game Solon was up one with the ball with 20 seconds left and it slipped away. Valencia played very well in the second game both on offense and defense. Bigger picture is that Solon still struggles against a zone. When they get content with walking the ball up the court they struggle. Saginaw played a tough zone defense that slowed Solon down and held them to 35. Detroit trip was a great experience again. Now they need to focus on trying to get a couple conference wins before heading to the CITC.

Solon girls visit Brunswick tonight. I'm not going. I hope denbigfish makes the drive out to Medina County. I'll be there for Saturday's homer vs. Strongsville.

Tight first quarter with the Lady Comets up 16-14 and then 26-19 at the half.

However, second half they came out gunning outscoring the Blue Devils 42-12 to have the final 68-31.

22-9 run third quarter and holding Brunswick to 3 points in the fourth.

Dee with 20 points and 5 assists and Valencia with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Other conference scores Mentor topped Strongsville 42-38. Medina over Euclid 55-50.

Record stands at 7-2 and welcomes the Strongsville Mustangs this Saturday at 7:30.

Keep it rolling Lady Comets.

Lady Comets Move To 7-0 In Conference

Solon topped Strongsville 61-45 with nearly a third of their points coming on free throws (20).

Led 33-27 at the half and again came out strong in the third period with a 17-4 run making a 19 point lead.

Dee with 18 and Valencia 14.

Wednesday Solon welcomes the pesky Mentor Cardinals 10-2 (6-0 Conference) . Maddie Moyer leads the Cardinal averaging over 20 pts in the last 4 games. Mentor topped Elyria 53-45 with a strong second half last night.

Solon moves to 8-2 overall (7-0 conference) and Strongsville stands at 7-5 (4-3).

Mentor fans will be there in full force. Go Lady Comets !

Mentor gave the Lady Comets two beat downs last year. This is a big game tonight in the conference prior to heading to the CITC. I hope they are focused!
