Thanks BullDog. It's not that Joe's won - its more about how they had to play to win. Mentor makes you play defense every second of the game and they make you switch a lot and chase them all over the floor. This was the kind or performance that can springboard you to Columbus.

VASJ with a HUGE program win at SVSM. The last thing D3 teams in Ohio needed to hear is that the Vikings are getting healthy and playing their best basketball at exactly the right time. The AP might be in the dark about this team (ranking them 9th) but I don't know of any other team in D3 that could into LBJ Arena and come out with a win. The young Vikings are starting to play up to their preseason hype and another deep postseason push to Columbus is absolutely possible.

For anyone at the game, Is Beachwood better than what we originally anticipated after losing their talent last season or are we not playing well? Following the game on Twitter for updates.

Beachwood played as well as they could and gave VASJ all it could handle. The Vikings played very sloppy and missed several inside shots against a packed in Beachwood zone. The Bisons were on fire from outside and had a very nicely drawn up play with 4.5 seconds left and could have dethroned VASj - but they missed the layup. Joe's was lucky to get by in this game. Butler saved their butts with his 3s. Beachwood played hard and had several shots where they just took the ball from a Viking player. VASJ played like they were looking past the Bison. The Vikings won by two last year in the semis and ended up in Columbus. I expect a better VASJ team to show up Friday.

Bball216, you know the respect I have for Babe and VASJ. I think Gaffney doesn't have the right attitude. Wants to be a wing and doesn't grind it out when needed inside. i.e., see the JFK game film. He pouted on the bench.
If you can contain Higgins, I think VASJ struggles on offense.

I respect you CCA but Gaffney is still figuring it out, sometimes it takes a while. He likes the wing because he can shoot. He is still only 16 and needs to get bigger (more weight) and stronger (more muscle) to grind it out. Luckily he has Babe to guide him on his attitude and outlook.

I wasn't at the game but I think I might be slightly concerned if I was a VASJ fan. Dropping the last game of the season to JFK and playing poorly by all accounts against a Beachwood team they should have handled. I want to see them do well and they should be a contender in DIII, so Joe's fans, what do you see as the problem?

As a Joe's fan I'm a bit concerned, but not overly. Last year Joe's barely got past Warrensville. Every team seems to have a close playoff game at some point. Joe's made this game WAY closer then it should have been. They have had a bad habit of playing down to the competition and that is dangerous. Sure they lost to JFK in a fluke type game, utbthey also beat SVSM and STA in the last week. Because of TJ Beachwood was well prepared for Joe's. The Vikings are fully aware how dangerous Gilmour and Warrensville are and I expect a great effort on Friday.
As for Babe and TJ - don't expect this to end anytime soon.

Amazing this squad beat Mentor and ASVSM.Poor execution and lack of focus .The Jv squad has some real nice talent.I would love to see about two or three of them on the varsity. That would have given them more talent,a deeper squad, more match up issues for the other team. The bench is not strong enough.Alonzo needs to get stronger and play inside.I thought last year against Lynchburg in the Semi-Finals was his coming out party. He has some good moments but also seems stagnant.Half his career is over. When is someone gonna light a fire under him? Him,McGarry,Will, and Jerry would be unbeatable if he would step it up. The future looks good for him though.

Does anyone hazard a guess as to why we pulled the ball out with 4-5 min. to go up by about 8? If your not fatigued,no foul trouble, and have superior talent that is akin to a prevent in football.I wasn't at the game but this is what I was told from those that were.Anybody know?

That is a common practice by teams with a lead to force teams to come out of the zone defense. Joe's was trying to make them play man and that would favor the Vikes. The danger is if you turn the ball over or miss an open shot - which Joe's did both. Then you find yourself in a tight game and the other team gains a large amount of momentum. That is exactly what happened and Joe's was very lucky they did not lose the game. But to answer your question that is why teams hold the ball - to losen up the zone.

Last year when we played VASJ, they did a phenomenal job of managing the clock. They spread us out with a lead and executed. It is very odd for VASJ to be winning by 6 (JFK game) with a minute to play and lose. To hear Babe pulled it out up 8 late in the game sounds like his great coaching which typically results in a layup for them.
I still question how good they are this year but great coaching with solid players could take them back to states.

This years team is good but they lack that explosive scorer like Dean and that player who could make the quick game changing athletic play like Roberts. That being said Gaffney is due for a monster game, Butler can shoot from the parking lot, McGarry is just flat out a leader and Higgins is rock solid and a game changer. The Vikings when they bring their A game is pretty good. I'm sure with a packed house and a talented Warrensville team opposite them will get their attention. If the SVSM game Vikings show up (I hope so) they could end up in Columbus - if the Beachwood Vikings show up they could be heading home.

VASJ plays a familiar foe in Warrensville Heights for the District crown on Friday. That is the team many expected to be their even though they were seeded #7. Should be another tight game and a packed house.

Didn't know Beachwood was in a zone.Yea you gotta execute with crisp passing and make the shot.Especially foul shots if you force the intentional foul.Seen a lot of bad results when teams pull it.More ball handling puts you on a slippery slope in a tight game. But it can work for you.Just gotta execute.

What a performance by VASJ in the Garfield District Final. The Vikings absolutely dominated and dismantled a very good Warrensville Heights team. When the starters were still in the Vikes were up by 40 on the Tigers and it ended up being a 75-45 final. This Tigers team was one of the hottest teams in NE Ohio and the team that knocked off the #2 and #3 seed in this district. When Joe's plays like this I'm not sure anybody can beat them. Throw into the mix that the so called #1 team LeBra and Oberlin both lost tonight the path to Columbus may have gotten easier.

I have been a long time reader on here I am finally taking the plunge to start posting also. What's better than talking high school sports with other knowledgeable fans. Anyway I can tell you Labrae wanted to play vasj also. Who would have won? Probably vasj but it would have been a fun game. Labrae just picked a bad time to play their worst game. Could have been pressure idk. I have nothing but respect for vasj they seem to do things the right way and play the game the right way with good kids. I have a lot to say but I don't want to make a huge post for my first one. So I'll end it with saying good luck the rest of the way and bring another championship back to northeast ohio. Hopefully our paths cross in the near future

NORTON21 - Welcome. I can honestly say that VASJ and it's fan base know very little about schools like Garfield or LaBrae. I do know however what motivates schools like VASJ, Ed's, Iggy etc and that is teams ranked above them. It's very possible there are better D3 teams in Ohio but Joe's feels highly disrespected being ranked 9th and finally 6th in Ohio. When they get a chance to play a team like that they get really hyped. Look at the Joe's schedule and look at every other team in D3. When I saw Garfield beat Kirtland by single digits and then they knocked off LaBrae I scratched my head. Joe's is easily 40+ points better than the Hornets. Although Joe's will not be able to test themselves against the AP #1 squad they will set out to send a strong message to the team that beat them. Don't be surprised if the game gets ugly. Are you going to the game Weds ? Since you know LaBrae it would great to hear your opinion and comparisons.
