Exclamation Cincinnati's Freestyle & Greco Wrestling Club

The Freestyle & Greco season will quickly be upon us. As you all know, there are MANY good spring club options around the city. Rather than adding yet another club, which often seems to spread out the wrestlers and results in less partners, a group of local coaches are instead coming TOGETHER and MERGING clubs. The purpose is to provide KIDS the best possible training environment and to ensure that every wrestler who shows up will have plenty of quality wrestlers around their weight and skill level. It is the belief of the coaches involved that the best thing for our area is to train TOGETHER as much as possible in the “off-season.” This will benefit wrestlers of all skill levels. Your elite level wrestlers will have other elite level wrestlers to train with as will your average level wrestler and your beginners. We will only BENEFIT by coming together. As you can see, many of the details have already been planned. HOWEVER, we are looking to add as many local head, assistant, youth, coaches to this as possible. If you are interested in being a part of this in ANY way, please touch base with any of the coaches listed on the flyer or come and talk to us at the district tournament this weekend if possible. This will be a work in progress; we want your input and we want to provide a great training environment for the spring season. With the schools that we already have committed and with your help we are certain we can provide a top notch spring training environment for our area – and improve upon what we have been doing in the past.

For many years, Oak Hills, Elder, Colerain, Taylor, West Hi, Northwest, Norwood, etc. have wrestled together for the Westside Wrestling club. This was once held at Oak Hills and the past couple of years has been ran at Mount St. Joseph.

The last couple of years Coach Meyer (Harrison) and I have worked to try to do more things together with Cornhusker & Westside coming together in the spring. Its no secret that in order to get better you need good coaching, but you also need practice partners on your level, whether that is an elite level or a beginners level, you need it. The last couple of years have worked out okay for Cornhusker and Westside when coming together, but when I stumbled across the thread on Yappi promoting the new spring club in Columbus in which multiple clubs/schools/coaches are merging at Otterbein University, I thought to myself "we can do better." It is not a good thing to have Harrison, LaSalle, and Elder all running separate clubs when they are located within 30 minutes from each other and those kids could all be training together

So, Coach Zerkle and I talked about it and agreed that this spring there will be NO Westside FR/GR Club, NO Golden Cross FR/GR Club, but rather one location where we can come TOGETHER to train. We are going to combine and try to do whats best for the wrestlers in our area. Harrison had already laid out plans for Cornhusker FR/GR club this spring, so Cornhusker will continue, but they also agree that everyone training together is what is needed and are currently trying to work something out so they can join (even if its one day a week).

This is our trial run at this, so we will see how it goes.

Of course some of these guys play spring sports or may choose not to do FR/GR, but look at what "could be" if just Harrison, Elder, and LaSalle were in one room training (not to mention studs from surrounding schools that will be in attendance)....

Returning State Placers
Lucas Byrd
Blake Wilson
Garrett Bledsoe
Ti'Ric Evans
Charles Sanders
Alec Moore-Nash
Austin Murphy ('16)

Returning District Placers
Cameron Baird
Antoine Allen
Jack Collins
Jacob Bernhardt
Elan Heard
Hunter Barge
Cam Sauerwein
Michael Baker
Trey Sizemore
X-xavier Weathersby
Antonio McCloud

Others
William Doepker
Seth Lambers
Chucky Lipps
Tanner Perdue
Austin Belcher
Zach Dunn
Josh Dunn
Nick Vogt
Brett McIntosh
Luke Shirley
Simon Shirley
Max Boyle

That is just 3 teams and these are just high school guys, didn't mean to leave anyone out here or slight anyone, just pointing out the talent that could all be training together if we get this rolling.

Like Coach Zerkle mentioned above, if you want to be a part of it or have any questions we want to have as many quality coaches & wrestlers in the room as possible. If you have any questions shoot them our way.

This is a great idea. I am so glad to see you guys working towards what's best for SWohio and not an individual school

Not to mention it is not located at an individual school either.
I hope to see some east siders join along. Mason, Moeller, Fairfield all should consider.

Harrison will be involved. As Coach Roush stated, Cincinnati Freestyle Club decisions were announced after we had distributed material on our club, so we had to consider how we would best accommodate Cornhusker members.

Cornhuskers will operate on Mondays and Thursdays from 6-7:30, while having an open door policy with Cincinnati Freestyle Club. Our intentions are to service our community as we had planned, but allow for a third training day for both clubs. We will travel to muddy creek on Wednesdays and our doors are open to Cincinnati Freestyle Club members with USA cards here at Harrison on Thursdays at no extra charge.

We value the opportunity to train with some of the best teams around the area and look forward to this relationship. The training rooms will no doubt be some of the toughest in the state. It will do nothing but better the area and help SW Ohio secure more spots on the podium!

Good first night on Monday with wrestlers from Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana in attendance. Coaches from Elder, LaSalle, and Taylor. Also helping with technique was former US Greco World Team Member Jeff Simons. Jeff will be helping as much as he can throughout the spring!

Anderson HS head coach and form State Champion Matt McIntire has expressed interest in bringing his guys over and helping with the club as well.

We are expecting a big crowd tonight. We will have 3 mats down!!
