Lake Catholic football

Guys the wrestling team is killing it with recruiting great talent, I think we can use their momentum for football. Do we have the summer camp for football set?

Yes fac974 I believe this is a make or brake year for O'D. I think the Cougars have to at least make the playoffs.

A good HS football team has to have a core of solid players OR a couple of D-1 studs and a few decent players around them.

What about the talent on the Lake Catholic squad leads you to believe that they'll make the playoffs, which would probably take 6 or 7 wins? I've watched Lake play Hoban the last few years and haven't noticed a closeness in talent between the schools recently.

Lake obviously needs to step up their peanut butter and jelly game, to help tighten the gap with hoban and bring in that core group and d1 players.

For many, many years, Lake Catholic would keep cranking out the quality teams. Does that imply their PB&J game was better 10 years ago?

I'm not sure they aren't losing kids to Mentor, Kirkland, Ignatius etc ... kids they would have gotten to attend Lake 5-10 years ago.

Are they fielding a football team this year? It's been a while now.

DB04 is right when he states that you don't necessarily
need D1 players to win a state title. The 2001
Lake Catholic proved that. To hoban2020 I didn't necessarily
say that Lake would make the playoffs. But O'D had never
Made the playoffs and that has to change.

Lake has been down but I'd say generally in line with what Hoban gets most years. Let's face it, the last two years are a HUGE outlier for what you'd expect from Hoban over the last 30 or so years.

Kirtland and Mentor both definitely get kids that Lake would have in the past. That's compounded with the feeder schools in Western Lake County and Eastern Cuyahoga basically going away.

In terms of actual football issues, it seems to me quarterback has been the biggest issue. Lake basically went 20 years having above average to great quarterback play. Without that kind of quarterback play, you're counting on near perfect execution out of everywhere else.

You don't need D1 recruits to win games. Brute force and talent don't always win games. Eds/Hoban 2016 proved that.

If West g makes a bad coaching hire
You can expect 2,3 stud athletes to come to Lake year after year!

I agree that QB has been a position of strength for Lake over the year but to me what made the Cougars an above average team was a solid collection of "football" players and those 6'2" 220 lbs. lanky athletes that played on the edge that had the quickness to keep up with the faster team speed programs you see in the playoffs like Benny, Mooney, and SVSM. Add in a coach and assistants that were one of the better game day staffs in the area and you have the recipe for a nice run year in year out. Now you have some nice football players with limited size but most importantly little to no speed and a coach that looks like he has enthusiasm but always seems to fall short on game day.

1. When I have some free time, I'm going to pull up old records from joeeitel.com. I think they go back to 2002 and will show the aggregate LC and Hoban records in the last 15 years aren't that different. You probably haven't noticed Hoban from pre-NCL days.

2. Yes, the latest changes by Hoban adopting the SVSM model of building a football team have been an outlier.

3. I'm an LC grad and attended so many LC football games back to the 80's. In fact, since my kids started attending Hoban, I've sat with LC grad friends on the LC side to watch the game. I would love for LC to return their past football glory; however, either the talent or coaching just isn't there these last few years.

I believe its both coaching and talent. IMO with Mentor schools program taking off, with Triv really becoming one of the best in the state, mentor education improving, not a lot of guys were leaving mentor for lake catholic. Then you add in Kirtland taking off doesnt help. They are a small school with one of the best public educations in the state. That some of the studs Kirtland, prolly wouldnt of played for Kirtland 10-15years ago. Guys Like washington, Bates, Kukura, Finkler, Madden, Hauber, and Santo, prolly dont play for Kirtland.

Following up as I said I would ... while following LC and living up in Lake County, I had no clue of anything Akron, including Hoban and Hoban football. As I moved south and my kids grew up, I've learned more about the history.

In response to your comments, I decided to spend 10 minutes browsing joeeitel.com for regular season records since 2000 (the further joe goes back):

Hoban - 109 regular season wins (6.4 wins/season over 17 years)
Lake Catholic - 107 regular season wins (6.3 wins/season over 17 years)

FYI - from 2000-2005 Hoban won 8 or 9 games each year, had a decent run from 2006-2009, won a combined total of 7 games from 2010-2012, then have won 5, 6, 9, 9 in the last 4 years.

LC also had some good runs from 2003-2005 of 8+ wins, 2009-2011 of 9 wins each year, but since then very mediocre years of 6, 3, 3, 5, 5 from 2012-2016.

In summary, to say that the Hoban football program, over an extended period, is any different than the LC football program over the same time would simply be wrong. Each program has had it's ebbs and flows as good classes and less skilled classes come through the school and coaching/coaching styles change.

While Lake has had some exceptional players, the real story of the best LC teams is getting a bunch of undersized guys to play above their weight class, so to speak. Lake had a ton of 5-9, 160 pound linebackers who just out motored people. A lot of the lines had 5-10, 200 pound guys on it. Lake generally was never the faster team on the field even when winning state championships.

What's the post season comparison?

Lake was in the semis and regional finals a lot of years.

Let's get this right this time, it took forever to move past Sal. Someone that has been proven other than educational bureaucracy. Tommy Gibbons? or someone similar.

My sources told me that the principal was asked if he was interested in Sal's position, apparently he wants to continue in his current role. He feels he can have a bigger impact on students as a principal, if they hire a quality president I think that is true otherwise we will continue to decline. Let's get it right, any suggestions?

They need to get rid of the principal as well, not promote him. He has no impact on students. He has got them all snowed. He's a huge problem there. As soon as he came in after Mr. Koenig left, the place started to decline. There is nothing for the kids there. No pep rallies, awful homecoming dances, no recognition of a two-time state champ, etc. Just recently they held a dance which cost $5/student and there was no DJ nor refreshments. They collected money to stand in the atrium (which we pay over $10,000 a year for). It's all about the mighty dollar there, nothing else. No wonder enrollment is down. Why send your kid there? The academics are bad as well. The average ACT score is one of the lowest in the Cleveland area. It's a shame they ran this school into the ground. But Sal was not alone...he had his principal puppet right by his side. Too bad he's not out the door with him.
