Off Season Training

So outside of playing Club soccer, what are some high schoolers doing for offseason training to prepare for the upcoming 2017 high school season. Open gym/fields? Weightlifting? Speed/agility training?

Do schools offer these things or do parents/players have to get them on their own?

Some schools offer indoor soccer (Centerville is doing Futsal). I'm sure it varies from school to school.

Year round training is destroying soccer. These girls need a break. Nothing wrong with laying around, gaining a few pounds. Come back and work yourself into shape. Good for the soul and body.

The real issue is this. All over the world, soccer is a 9 month sport. So, the US should be no different. For those players that are playing club, especially those players that are playing high level club (ECNL, MRL, National), there is no reason for them to have to participate in off-season high school conditioning. So, high school coaches that have those players on their teams should take this into account as they design Winter and Summer training.

I agree, I coach youth club soccer and I strongly encourage my kids to take breaks. I have parents asking me all the time to play every session of indoor and train all the time. I encourage my kids to play other sports, take breaks away from soccer, and to enjoy being a kid!

You are correct. Anything done in the off season is all voluntary. High schools can only make things mandatory from Aug. 1 until the season is complete.

True, but a lot of coaches will also say "off-season training is not mandatory, but you making this team is not mandatory either" unfortunately.

I don't really look at Futsal or Indoor sessions as true training. Show up, play 24-45 minutes and go home, just a fun limited stress way to keep the ball at your feet.

I always told my daughters they don't have to do it, but they WANT to play. All but one would play soccer all day everyday if they could. And even with playing basketball, and volleyball off season they would prefer to miss those games to play or practice anything soccer related.
