Alliance D-2 District Rankings (Off-Season #3)

I love doing these rankings, but as it has been pointed out before, they are just for fun. To any wrestlers who read these and feel that they are ranked too low, you may be right.
I am bound to be wrong on many of the rankings, but fortunately they have absolutely no impact on how anyone will finish at any tournament this season or any other year.

I started moving wrestlers up and down from their previous year’s weights. The new weights are partially based off of where they’ve been wrestling in the off season, though a lot of it is pure guesswork at this time.
Please let me know if anyone has inside information about new weights, schools, or wrestlers that they think should be added.

I’ve tried shifting the wrestlers around from schools that changed divisions. Please let me know if any are wrong, or if I’m forgetting any schools/wrestlers.

* = unsure about participation

-The schools of the incoming freshmen are based off of the previous Yappi thread. Please let me know if any are wrong or have changed.

106-
1. Jacob Decatur- CVCA (1st, 6th state)
2. Kyle Rowan- Perry (5th district)
3. Jason Mayes- Jefferson
4. Ethan Fletcher – Canfield (8th middle school state)
5. Garrett Lautzenheiser- Louisville (7th middle school state)
6. Dierre Clayton- SVSM (8th middle school state 2016)
7. Hunter Miller- Canton S.
8. Jordan Najdusak- Hubbard

Decatur kicks off the year ranked #2 in the nation by Flo Wrestling, just behind Cadet World champ Kurt McHenry.

113-
1. Christian Wayt- West Branch (5th state)
2. Ed Suber- SVSM (7th state)
3. Kyle Petersen- Aurora (SQ)
4. Jake Hamulak- Chardon
5. Tommy Frazier- Lake Catholic
6. Caden Scarbrough (6th middle school state)/Matthew Williams- CVCA
7. Sean Neff- Streetsboro (6th district)
8. Joe Averill- University

Suber’s move to SVSM could play a huge role in the team title race. The state placer was a bout away from placement at the Beast of the East last year, and he also posted wins over state placers Cael Woods, Trey Finnearty, Payton Burgdorf, and Andy Graham last year as well as state qualifiers Jared Dressler, Michael Shaw, Hunter Olson (twice), and Thane Kaufman.

120-
1. Matt Cardello- CVCA (3rd, 7th, 8th state)
2. Dominic Carone- Streetsboro (2nd, 5th state)
3. Hunter Ryan- Lake Catholic (4th, 6th state)
4. Joe Wright- Coventry (8th state)
5. Hunter Olson- SVSM (SQ)
6. Ryan Jakubiak- Louisville
7. Alex DelGarbino- Girard (5th district)
8. Nick Began- Orange (6th district 2016)

Cardello is ranked 13th in the country by Flo Wrestling entering the year, though at 113 where he wrestled in Fargo.
It’ll be worth following to see which weight he chooses. It’s likely better for the team if he wrestles 120, with Williams and Scarbrough more suited to 113, but he’ll likely be a state title favorite if he’s at 113.

126-
1. Connor McCrone- Lake Catholic (5th, 4th state)
2. Luke Hewitt- Hoban (SQ)
3. Brandon Reeves- Woodridge (6th district)
4. Davin Rhoads- Louisville (2nd middle school state)
5. Mike Hamski- Jefferson
6. Isaiah Smith- Field
7. Logan Martin- Southeast
8. Sam Van Sickle- SVSM (7th middle school state)

Rhoads was runner-up at the middle school state tournament last year after placing 5th as a 7th grader the prior season. During his 7th grade run, he defeated 2017 high school state qualifier Andrew Knick 3-2 in the ultimate tiebreak and then bested 2017 high school state placer Skyler Lasure 4-2 in sudden victory.

132-
1. Jordan Decatur- CVCA (1st state)
2. Jack Gorman- Aurora (SQ, 8th state 2016)
3. David Massey- Woodridge (6th state)
4. Josh Baitt- Jefferson (5th district)
5. Kaleb Kiss- Norton (6th district)
6. Carter Mickley- Louisville
7. McCoy Watkins- Canfield
8. Sean O’Dwyer- University

Flo Wrestling has Decatur ranked #1 in the country at 126 to start the year. I’m not sure if he plans on wrestling at 126, which is closer to where he wrestled for the world team trials, or if he’ll bump up to 132.
He’s scheduled for a rematch with Gavin Teasdale at Who’s #1 to start the year, though he wrestled 120 at Who’s #1 last year before wrestling 126 for the season.

138-
1. Luke Wymer- SVSM (4th state)
2. Andy Garr- Aurora (SQ 2016)
3. Cole Bailey- Southeast (5th district 2016)
4. Justin West- CVCA (6th district, 6th district 2016)
5. Miles Knuckles- Coventry
6. Derek Cain- (Akron) Springfield*
7. Skyler Curry- Alliance*
8. Eric El-Hayek- Canfield

I think Bailey will be a state placer this season. He was excellent throughout last year but had a rough district tournament and missed out on a spot in Columbus.
Last season, he placed 4th at Top Gun where he beat state placer Jayden Hefner 4-2, majored West Virginia state placer Hunter Burdette (14-3) and split two bouts with PA state placer Leno Ciotti.

145-
1. Bret Baker- Norton (7th state)
2. Parker Utley- Alliance (SQ)
3. Jake Potok- SVSM (SQ)
4. Austin Pownall- CVCA (1st middle school state)
5. Kaleb Dohse- Southeast (5th district)
6. Jeff Dunfee- Ravenna
7. Caiden Rodgers- Streetsboro
8. Dakota Ryan- Lake Cath.

Utley’s weight will likely impact the rest of the middle-weight line-up for Alliance. If he’s at 138, we could potentially see Lightner at 145 or Alex Kurpil at the weight.
If Utley’s at 145, Lightner and Kurpil will likely wrestle off for 152 with someone being bumped up to 160 to wrestle off Zach Rodgers.
Another factor will be the availability of Skyler Curry who was a district qualifier in 2016, and started off well last season (wrestling 132) before missing the end of the year. If Curry returns, I could see him anywhere from 132 to 152 pushing for district placement. He beat state alternate Derek Unkefer 7-3 at East Liverpool last year.

152-
1. Jax Leonard- Louisville (8th state)
2. David Johnson- SVSM
3. Luke McKeon- Lake Catholic (SQ)
4. Dylan Miller- West Branch (SQ)
5. Will McGhee- Aurora (5th district)
6. Ethan Ducca- Chardon (6th district)
7. Stefan Farian- Revere (6th district)
8. Braylin Lightner- Alliance

Johnson wrestled 152 at the freestyle state tournament, so I’m keeping him here and Musci at 160 until I see or hear otherwise.
All though this weight is deep, it’s still less hellacious that 160 which could have a 2x state champ, 2 other state placers, and potentially a pair of state qualifiers if Yoho returns.

160-
1. Kevon Freeman - Lake Catholic (1st, 1st, 6th state)
2. Quinton Kelley- Hoban (3rd state)
3. Anthony D’Alesio- Canfield (4th state)
4. Isaac Yoho- Woodridge (SQ 2016)*
5. Jared Musci- SVSM (SQ)
6. Jamil Bannister- Girard (5th district)
7. Trevor Mitch- Aurora
8. Austin Hinzman- Coventry

Freeman starts the year ranked 11th in the country by Flo Wrestling (at 152). It’s surprising to see such a deep weight-class here at 160 where you already have a 2x state champ who’s going for his 3rd state title as well as another wrestler going for his second state title in Graham’s Ryan Thomas.

170-
1. Hank Carey- Streetsboro (SQ)
2. Peter Biery- West Branch
3. Nick Crawford- Canfield
4. Cole Hivnor – Lake Catholic (1st middle school state)
5. Jack Rogan- (Akron) Springfield
6. Marcus Davis- Alliance
7. Jacob Loudon- Aurora
8. Richie Eyre- Tallmadge

Biery defeated Eyre 10-7 for the sectional title last year after beating state placer Khord Moore 7-5 in the semifinals.

182-
1. David Crawford- Canfield (1st, 4th, 6th state)
2. Duce Johnson- Alliance (3rd state)
3. David Heath- SVSM (3rd state)
4. Spencer Robinson- Woodridge (SQ)
5. Kenny Marra – West Branch (1st middle school state)
6. Zach Hazlett- Girard
7. Clay Smock- Jefferson
8. Jason Beyer- Perry

This should be a phenomenal weight-class with the potential for the top 3 finishers in the state to all emerge from this district.
Crawford returns as the state champ, Johnson beat 2x state finalist Robbie Bowers at the state tournament last year, and Heath placed 3rd after beating Keysean Amison and Evan Schenk in his final two bouts.
Robinson was only a bout away from placement last year, and Marra was a middle school state champ last season.
It’ll be worth following to see if anyone grows into 195 during the off-season which could be a more open weight-class.

195-
1. Dominic Cooper- Canfield (5th, 6th state)
2. C.J. Williams- Norton (6th district)
3. Colin McNamara- Aurora
4. Zak Crissman- SVSM
5. Sam Eldridge- Chardon
6. Thomas McGee- Benedictine
7. Beckett Fant- Revere
8. Carlos Bach- Girard

McNamara could be a big factor for Aurora in the team race. He had some impressive wins last years as a sophomore (Bruce George, Marcus Davis, Michael O’Horo), and he should be a serious threat to make the district finals at this weight-class.

220-
1. Tyler Stein- Canfield (SQ)
2. Breslin Walker- CVCA (SQ)
3. Nick Mason- Perry (5th district)
4. Ben Hornacek- Norton (6th district)
5. Chavion Young- Alliance
6. Chris Julian- Howland
7. Anthony Ward/Louie Stecz- SVSM
8. Lucas Woolf- West Branch

Walker was a bout from placement at the state tournament as a freshman last year. If he can emerge as a district champ for CVCA, that will go a long way toward cementing their team title.
Last season, Walker beat state qualifiers Jacob Cover (9-3), Kyle Gallagher (6-4), and Austin Weingarner (8-5).

285-
1. Jack DelGarbino- Girard (4th state)
2. Brandon Matlock- Howland (4th state)
3. Alex Leasure- Alliance (SQ)
4. Matthew Holman- CVCA (5th district)
5. Alan Christine- Conneaut
6. Austin Hindley- Woodridge (6th district)
7. Connor Franks- Tallmadge
8. Mehki Reid- Canton S.

The top 3 ranked wrestlers here all come from the same conference (EOWL) and all of them also wrestle at the same sectional tournament (West Branch). Christine also wrestles in the EOWL, which makes 4 of the top 5 wrestlers. Christine pinned state qualifier Tim Davin to claim a title at Columbiana last year.

Team:
1. SVSM
2. CVCA
3. Canfield
4. Lake Catholic
5. Aurora
6. Alliance
7. West Branch
8. Louisville

Adding two middle school state finalists (Pownall and Duvall) is huge for CVCA who now looks like the potential district favorite heading into the season.
I knew that they would be a great tournament team with their top end talent, but the addition of these two wrestlers in the middle of their line-up should be crucial in a dual meets. They may also be able to bump Cardello up to 126 in certain situations and insert either Williams or Scarbrough in at 120 to further fortify the squad.

Canfield could get a push from their light-weights. I know they have a handful of quality freshmen like Fletcher, Nick Barber, and Ron Angelilli who could potentially make an impact at the district level.
They should also help even out the line-up as Canfield makes a potential run at a birth in the state duals final.

SVSM adds a few big pieces in state placer Suber and former middle school state placer Clayton. The addition of those two plus newcomers David Johnson and Sam Van Sickle could propel SVSM to the district title.
Their line-up could be even more potent if Heath or Crissman makes 170. That would free up 195 for Ward where he would have a shot at a top 4 finish (which he could still potentially accomplish at 220).

I’m still a bit uncertain about parts of Lake Catholic’s line-up, though they could have former middle school state placer Richie Delsanter or round of 12 wrestler, Anthony Trivisanno, who could be in the 106-126 range. Their presence could be a big factor in Lake Catholic’s pursuit of a district title.

A special thanks to Boro Fan for all the insight into the weights of the wrestlers, Baum’s Page and Jake’s Wrestling for all of the results that they provide, and to any of the other wrestling nerds that actually read these things.

I would assume that Aurora will be placed in the SVSM sectional since they were in the old Walsh Jesuit sectional a few years back when Aurora was DII. That would give you the 1,2 and 5 ranked teams coming out of SVSM. Would Chardon go to the Lake Catholic sectional. What other sectional changes might be made?

Thanks Max for this report. I don't rank anymore but I am always looking for the good wrestlers and matches. I am sure www.nwntv.com will be at this district doing it live again next year.

Each time you've done a preview for next yrs. district at Alliance it reinforces the fact that next yrs. district will be a huge jump in quality. I've been at this district the last two yrs. and there was good wrestling, but if these wrestlers stay healthy and on target there will be some awesome matches.
