Sorry, I've only been in the area for a couple of years....

Who was on that 2004 Hamilton team? Any Notable players? I didn't realize they'd won a State title that recently.

No one really, just a massive choke job on SJJ's part. They had something crazy like 4-5 D1 players on their team that year.

The leading scorer in the finals was Brandon Lampley who went on to play at Ball State in the Mid American Conference where he achieved an all conference honorable mention honor.

Adam Myers-White was also an all state football player and went to the University of Tennessee where he lettered for four years in football. He played in many games at various defensive positions and was often in the Vols starting lineup in his senior year at Tennessee.

Billy Allen, the coaches son, received a scholarship from Albany University. He was one of the Hamilton leaders in several stat categories, a good all around player.

Hamilton was 24 and 2 for the year coming into this game and SJJ had already lost 4 games. SJJ only lost in the finals by 3 points. I wouldn't characterize this as a massive choke job but rather one very good team getting beat by a slightly better team as is usually the case in the state finals.

The 92 D1 final Lakota vs. Lima Sr. that game shouldn't have been close on paper but Lima Sr. didn't bring there A+ game and got beat by a solid Lakota squad.

I'm not sure why you think it shouldn't have been close on paper because it was always close on the hardwood.

Early in that season Lakota beat Lima 87-82. Late in the season Lakota beat Lima 92-86. In the tournament Lima took West into OT before loosing to the Thunderbirds for the third time that season. It sure looked like they brought their A+ game to Columbus at the time, especially when they were up by over 20 with 11 minutes to go

Both teams were in the same conference and the stars of the teams had been playing each other for two and three years and knew each other like the back of there hands.

That OT win for the championship for Lakota was one of my most memorable basketball games of all time. I just loved watching Greg Simpson play ball.

Mayo and Walker played on the first two teams. The 3rd team was special in a good way by overcoming the loss of the two stars.

Defending state champions the Reading Blue Devils did on Saturday, March 6, 2004 in Sectional final at Cintas. It was NCH only loss of the year. Final score was 58-47 The Blue Devils (17-6), unbeaten NCH (21-1)

very interesting thread. It's interesting to see how dominate the big public schools were until the 80s or so. Would it be difficult to compile something like the top 10-20 all time wins leaders in Ohio? Maybe who has had the POY all time in Ohio? I supposed the Mr Basketball thread covers it from the 80s on but I like to see some of the old time greats that are forgotten about. I was a little surprised to see Canton McKinley with only 3 or 4 state titles. I don't mean that disrespectfully at all I just thought they may have been up around 5+.

Again very informational thread, thanks

Give it up for the 1945 Bellevue "whiz kids" Redmen. Finished 25-0 by beating Massillon and Middletown on the same day. And Middletown was the dynasty in the 40s-50s.

How did this happen? How could these two be in different regions? I know lines have to be drawn somewhere, but this seems weird.

Yep, That was right at the beginning of the Middies "dynasty era". I think its impressive that the Middies still have the most state championships and their last one was in 1957. In a 12 year span, from 1944 to 1957, they won 7 championships. They have had many, many good teams since then, with a few runner up finishes. Hamilton, the Middies chief rival has 4. During the Middies best years, Hamilton was probably the second best team in the state. 2 of their 4 championships were won during the 12 year Middies run.

Middletown defeated Canton McKinley (Massillon's arch rival) in the other
State Semi-final to get to the Championship game.

1945 Semis...

Bellevue 47 / 44 Massillon
Middletown 29 / 28 Can.McKinley

1945 Title game...

Bellevue 36 / 34 Middletown

Looking at the updated lists of the OHSAA, Portsmouth is 2nd all-time in state appearances with 15, and 8th all-time in total wins with 1,381. The Trojans have also made the state tournament in 8 decades, topped only by Canton McKinley's 10 decades. Portsmouth has an overall record of 14-11 in the state tournament, 12-7 in Final 4 games. The Trojans have an 8-1 record in state semifinal games since 1931(state champions in Class AA), and are 7-1 in regional final games since 1961(state champions in Class AA). PHS has a 4-4 record in state championship games, and have won the state title in D2(1988--first year of D2), Class AA(1978--PHS's first year in AA), Class AA(big school--1931, 1961).

As of this post, Portsmouth has a record of 9-4(1,390 total), and needs 10 more wins this year to reach 1,400. It will be tough to do, but it could happen if they can make regionals.

Waterloo Wonders

1934 and 1935 five kids from a very small school beat everybody, even the big boys. Someone should make a movie out of it, like Hoosiers.

This happens (1 of the 5 districts in SWO) is assigned to the Columbus
Regional (1 district from SWO + 3 districts from C-bus). Both the SWO and
C-bus districts are 'super' (they seed across all the teams) and thus a team
gets to chose which bracket they want.

Out of area (Columbus) teams that played in the Columbus Regional

1999 East Liverpool (E/SE)
2000 McKinley (NEO)
2001 Zanesville (E/SEO)
2002 Centerville (SWO)
2003 Centerville (SWO)
2004 Moeller (SWO)
2005 Moeller (SWO)
2006 Elder (SWO)
2007 Moeller (SWO)
2008 Trotwood-Madison (SWO)
2009 St.Xavier (SWO)
2010 Colerain (SWO)
2011 Lakota East (SWO)
2012 McKinley (NEO)
2013 Timken (NEO)

Going way back...

1962 Lima Sr. (NWO)
1964 McKinley (NEO)

In 1961 A Columbus district winner was assigned to
the Canton regional (Portsmouth) - how would you like
to make that drive (Interstates not complete).
