2019 D-II Ashtabula District Thread:

I'm making this thread to keep track of each Ashtabula District team records and have discussions regarding the Sectional/District. I'll include a poll of who will win this years district and represent the district in Canton.

Cleveland Villa Angela-St.Joseph is the defending District Champ after knocking off Mentor Lake Catholic 58-47 last season. VASJ is looking for their 7th straight District Crown in 2019 after winning a district title from 2013 in D-IV, 2014,15,16,17 in D-III, and 2018 in D-II.

Ashtabula has not had a representative in Columbus since Lake Catholic in 2012 before bowing out against 2012 D-II State Champ Dayton Dunbar.

No team went back to back or 3-peated in this district since 2005, 2006, and 2007 Harvey Red Raiders.

VASJ has the most State Championships while in this district with three won in 1992, 1994, 1995.

Below is a list of the past Ashtabula/Kirtland/Mentor/Madison District Champions ranging from 1990-2018, for the missing info from 1990-98 please disclose:

2003: Benedictine over Lakeview

T-2.) Harvey and Lake Catholic (3)

This is my opinion only but here are my favorites and a dark horse for this district as of 12/15/18, so pretty early and may change come tournament time.

Favorites: VASJ and Lake Catholic
Reason: Both teams are coming back with most of their key players from 2018, based off of VASJ losing Jerry Higgins to graduation, you'd think Lake Catholic should win this district. Be aware, VASJ did return most of their key players such as Mitchem, Jackson, Koppleman, Calhoun, Priah, and Wagg and have beaten both Cleveland Heights and Hoban in back to back thrillers to start 2018 after falling to Pick. North in blowout fashion. VASJ still have Hoban once more in Akron, Benedictine 2x, CCC 2x, St.Ignatius, St.Ed's, Euclid, CCA, Mentor, and St.Vincent-St.Mary on the schedule. Player development will be key for the Vikes and if they can grow and clean youthful mistakes as the season goes, they will find themselves back in Canton in March.

Lake Catholic brings back a great chunk of their 2018 squad and their two key players in Junior duo of Eller and Frazier as they are key for the Cougars this season and if they want to avenge their District Runner-Up. Unfortunately we will not get an in season preview like we did last year with VASJ with the Vikings winning the late season contest. Lake has a solid strength to their schedule with St.Ignatius, Hoban, Solon, Ursuline, Holy Name, CCA, Beachwood, and Mentor for the Cougars.

My dark horse: Painesville Harvey
Reasons: To maybe everyone's surprise mainly due to the fact that Harvey has not been relevant since their District Championship teams in the mid 2000's, Wojciechowski who led some pretty good VASJ teams to States in 06,07, and 08 may finally have a team that can possibly make some noise in this district led by freshman standout Coffee III and returning their entire starting 5 from last season but a year older and with more experience can be this districts Cinderella if they can avoid their infamous midseason collapse. Harvey has started the year 4-0 with 3 of their 4 wins coming in blow out fashion against West G, Hawken, and Chagrin Falls. The Red Raiders have games against Riverside 2x, Benedictine, Perry 2x, West G once more, Beachwood 2x, and CCA.

This should be an interesting District this season, best of luck to everyone's teams this season!

Glenville 7-6
Geneva 5-6
Chardon 4-6
Conneaut 3-6
Shaw 3-7
NDCL 2-8
West Geauga 3-9

I also want to apologize for some confusion but I did not realize Edgewood dropped to D-III until today. Ignore them in the poll and view it as Conneaut instead.

At this point of the season, VASJ and Lake Catholic are the favorites. Harvey is the dark horse and we should know more about them when they play Benedictine next Saturday in Painesville.
The winner of the Ashtabula District squares off against the winner of the Stow District in the sweet 16.

Friday could be a Regional Semi preview at The Purple Palace and should be a great game. Iím interested in seeing how a semi-young Harvey team holds up against a talented Bengals squad. I gotta give Wojo credit as it was a struggle for a while going from a storied program to a not so storied program, struggling to win games for the most part but staying through it.

I could of sworn seeing Edgewood being D-II and Conneaut being dropped to III on the NEOHDB website.

Not that. That's the actual tournament draw. I should have been more specific. It's the assignments for which districts feed into which regionals. Usually comes out early January. I haven't seen it yet on the OHSAA site though.

Should be a very good District from the Semi Finals on. VASJ and Lake are both playing well. Glenville gave VASJ all it could handle for 3 quarters last year and Harvey looks to be much better. I still feel it will come down to the talent and depth of Joe's against the two studs from Lake. The Cougars and Vikings are both well coached. I would be very surprised if we did not get a rematch of last year with VASJ winning a close one.

What's with these asinine times for regional finals? On regional final Saturday there's a DII final in Canton at 12. Both DI finals, Akron & CSU are at 2. No time to catch both II & I. Then back to Canton for DIII in the evening. It would be nice to catch multiple games but the timing looks bad.

No idea, kind of dumb in my mind but I guess it is when the venues set the availability to use for the tournament.

A quick update on the District regarding the top 3 teams. VASJ defeated Gilmour Academy (Stow District) by a narrow score of 64-63 then flopped against St.Ignatius by almost 20, in which Lake Catholic beat on a neutral court. Lake also blew out Gilmour in the opening week of the season. I expect for them to regroup but if they donít before playoffs, they are in trouble. At the same time, a few of their seniors have played for a State Title and won at least 2 district and 1 regional crowns.

Harvey narrowly defeated Orange by two points on Friday before getting upset on a 3pt bank shot on Tuesday against Perry (also in Ashtabula District). If Harvey can regroup and avoid their signature mid season collapse, they will be fine. They are led by a coach who has coached many big games including the Final Four in Columbus in 06, 07, and 08 with VASJ. If they continue to buy into Wojís game plan, they can make some noise.

Lake Catholic dominated in their games against Padua on Friday and University School on Tuesday. Lakeís top players Eller and Frazier continue to lead the Cougars to another impressive season, but can they get over defending District Champions and 7x state champion VASJ if they both meet? We shall see. They are led by legendary St.Joes and John Carroll HC Mike Moranís son Matt Moran.

My rankings have changed a bit on the projected seeding. As of today, I would give Lake the edge for the #1 slot, VASJ at #2, and Harvey remaining at #3.

Here are the next 5 games for the Top 3 teams:

Lake Catholic (10-2)
1/25 vs. Warren JFK
1/29 @ Holy Name
2/1 vs. Walsh Jesuit
2/5 vs. Cornerstone Christian
2/8 @ Cleveland Central Catholic

VASJ (9-3)
1/25 @ Hoban
2/1 vs. Cleveland Central Catholic
2/8 vs. Padua
2/9 @ Euclid
2/15 @ Benedictine

Harvey (9-3)
1/25 vs. West Geauga
1/29 vs. Geneva
2/1 @ Beachwood
2/8 @ Orange
2/9 vs. Chagrin Falls

Lake has the easiest 5 game span of the 3 despite having CCC at the end of that said span, but not by much as Harvey is the 2nd easiest with only Beachwood could hand the Red Raiders their 4th loss, while VASJ has to go through gauntlet #1 of 2019 with Hoban, CCC, Euclid, and Benedictine all waiting for their revenge before the get to the brutal gauntlet #2 with Mentor and a trip to Akron to face the D-II State Champ who knocked them out in Canton St.Vincent-St.Mary on back to back nights, then to Lakewood to face the St.Edward Eagles 2 days later, then face St.Thomas Aquinas in Louisville, OH the next night. That brutal stretch is 4 games in 5 days and will be my factor as the Vikings enter Sectional play. So donít be surprised if they take the 1st round bye to get a breather.

Don't be so quick to jump off the band wagon. The Vikings will be ready in March - that is all that matters. Keep the faith. If the past has taught you anything no matter how many losses they have in the regular season VASJ is ready for long tournament runs.

Will the two tone jerseys that the Vikings wear with the giant patches on them be permitted in OHSAA tournament play?

If Brush and Coach Chet Krzyzewski could get their top of the line amazing new NBA quality jerseys approved by OHSAA, I'm sure VASJ would have no problem.

We are almost a week away from the tournament draw. This season is going by real fast. Congrats to all the teams on a good season so far. Here is a quick update regarding the top 4 teams in the district.

1. Lake Catholic (12-2) won their last 2 games coming against Warren JFK and Holy Name.
Their next three games are home against Walsh Jesuit 2/1/19, home against Cornerstone Christian 2/5/19, and traveling to Slavic Village to face Cleveland Central Catholic at St.Stans Social Center on 2/8/19.

2. Villa Angela-St.Joseph (11-3) split their last two games with a loss to St.Ignatius and a come from behind win at Archbishop Hoban.
Next three games are at home against Cleveland Central Catholic was PPD tonight and rescheduled for 2/5/19, home against Padua Franciscan 2/8/19, and traveling down the street to face neighborhood rival Euclid at the Doc on 2/9/19.

3. Painesville Harvey (11-3) won their last 2 games against West Geauga and Geneva.
Next three games are at Beachwood 2/1/19, at Orange 2/8/19, and home against Chagrin Falls 2/9/19.

4. Perry (10-3) won their last 2 games beating Orange and Hawken.
Next three games are at Chagrin Falls 2/1/19, home against Painesville Riverside 2/2/19, and home against non OHSAA member Fuchs Mizrachi 2/7/19.

Top four seeding prediction (my personal opinion)

1. Lake Catholic
2. VASJ
3. Harvey
4. Perry

(VASJ may get nod for #1 seed based on strength of schedule compared to Lake Catholicís SOS.)

You would not put Glenville in over Perry ? We will see what Joe's does in the next two weeks. They have a more impressive resume then Lake at this point. I agree the schedule strength might give the Vikings the edge. Not sure it matters because those two squads seem destined to meet regardless of seeding.

Perry has the better resume over Glenville and also the better record. Playing a Senate schedule doesnít help Glenvilleís case for the 4 seed. Instead they are likely middle of the pack either a 5 or 6 seed

Because it was something unexpected that no body saw coming and may have an effect on seeding that's set next week, something to keep an eye out for with NCL division standings. I did the same thing calling VASJ out over their play much of the season and bashed them when got blown out by Iggy, and rightfully deserved to get called out. Nothing to get your panties up in bunch. From what I saw from highlights posted on the NH feed, Lake played like (bleep) Walsh was hot from deep, perfect storm, simple as that. Lake I'm sure will bounce back and that both teams are very well coached and have some concerns going into the final stretch of the regular season but are more than likely destined for an early March date at Lakeside.

C'Town 216 is good people. He gives good info and does not instigate shyte. Now I don't either unless I see a reason to.Why don't YOU give us a recap about yesterday night? You obviously get the issue between VASJ and Lake. Based on your paranoia about the number of posts about your school, your sniffing around looking for something. Nothing there just facts.Make America Great Again!!!! Take Care

I will enlighten you. The VIKING VILLAGE does not regard LC as a long term interest/threat/rival. WHY? The reason is that LC does not have a tradition of (say this slowly like Charlie Sheen) WINNNNNNNNNNING. They may win this season against JOES. However, in the long run, there will be no comparison. Why do we have this outlook? We have 7 State titles. We have 15 regional titles. We have 31 district titles. We do not give a ?$%& about LC. Do not take C'TOWNs word as gospel from us VIKINGS. He sounds like part Cougar to me.
