Alter is slouching toward irrelevance..Part of this rests with the coaching, part on the overdependence on 2 sports players..Until you have a team anchored by at least 5 skilled. dedicated ballers you are at the mercy of what the football season dictates. This season appears to be headed for the dumper; no late season melding on the horizon. Tricky call for the AD and athletic board ahead.

Some years ago, there was a small, but vocal "dump Petro" campaign at Alter. The argument went something like this, "Petro won a few state championships? Big deal, with all that talent, he should have won at least ten state championships!". Now, with all that talent, Alter hopes for a winning record at best. Be careful what you wish for.

Petro had way better talent. The current group is solid, but Petro rarely had a team without at least one D1 player. Don’t forget, Alter just beat a very good Fenwick team. They will bounce back. The glory days won’t return until they stop trying to win with more than a few football kids.

I mean, he is right. Alter has and will always have some kids who can ball, but they can't over rely on football players like they are doing now. Until they get someone like him back in the fold, we will continue to see some underachieving seasons.

I'm confused.

Saying Alter is down is a pretty hot take. Back to back league titles in 16 & 17. District title in 16, probably should have beat Aiken in Regional Semis. District Final last year with a "down" team. That's more in two seasons than Carroll has accomplished in its existence.

Is Alter "down" because they don't have basketball only players any more, the talent is down, or the coaching? It can't be all three.

I think it’s all 3. Alter has in a way become Lasalle, St. X, and Elder in Cincy who’s basketball programs has been somewhat below average in the last 3 years. They are a football powerhouse schools so most of the best athletes only focus on football. That mixed with a deep run in football playoffs every year and basically playing catch up most the season.
The basketball talent and coaching are connected. Coulter is a good coach but doesn’t have the pull Petro did to get “basketball players” to come to alter to play basketball. Also if centerville continues to get better that doesn’t help either.

Alter has been very inconsistent the past several years. They get very good wins, lose games they shouldn't, or are on either side of a blowout win or lose. For example, Alter beat a very good Fairmont team, beat Fenwick, won at LaSalle, and a had good holiday tournament. Then they come back and lose to a terrible Carroll team at home by 12 and lose Tuesday by 30+ to CJ. Alter was down almost 40 for awhile in the 3rd quarter. Did CJ play lights out? yes. Did Alter have their worst game ever and not make any shots? yes. But these Alter players are soft. The only ones that play aggressive are the football kids. Bazelak still hasn't played in any games in Ohio. I don't know his deal, but I heard he's being soft too about coming back from a minor football injury. Hope this team gets it together and makes a run. They are very capable of doing so.

You can’t be serious. He’s not in any discussion for Mr. Basketball anywhere. He’s good high school player, but there are 75-100 players in Ohio that are better.

He didn't look like Mr. Basketball last night in their loss to purcell at home

Uhl is not a Mr. Basketball candidate by any means. He's averaging 20ppg but there are a lot more athletic players. Atleast he didn't drop f bombs to the refs and then cuss out one of Coach Coulter's young assistants on the bench last night.

I will say that Purcell has a good coach and he gets after it with his players.

So here’s the thing. I was sitting right behind the alter bench. Yes the player dropped an f bomb to a ref in frustration but the coach deserved it after calling the Purcell player a whiny mf’er. The ref even told the coach to shut up. Much respect to both teams. Extremely hard played game.

The only D3 team that I feel has a chance to play with Purcell in SW Ohio might be Stivers. I think Kerr's squad can make it to Columbus. Of course, put Deer Park in the mix. But schools in Dayton such as Brookville won't be able to keep up.

Not sure Deer Park is really in the mix anymore. They were never a deep team, and their bench is even shorter with Hocker out for the year.

They've played a lot of close games with mediocre teams and lost to Reading on Friday.

Must've been a high tempo game. 67 is the most PM has given up all year and 83 is the most they've scored.

High tempoish Purcell was literally scoring at will so deer park had way more possessions than normal. Game was only 16 but was way worse than that

Purcell Marian's biggest challenge in the SW District appears to be Anna. Potentially Ready if they reach the Final Four.

Their biggest challenge will be Dayton Stivers. Anna is smoke and mirrors from a weak schedule. Much like Madison who is ranked in the state from a good record from a weak schedule. They just lost to another D3 favorite Harvest prep by 20 tonight. Stivers probably poses the biggest challenge.

D3:

Purcell
Stivers

everbody else... Not to discredit teams like Anna or Madison, but even though they MAY win a district title, the regional games are going to be lopsided. If the entire GCL Coed was in D3, they'd run the tables on everyone. Purcell is beating everyone and will run those teams out the gym with their press, defense, and height/jumping.

really? CJ's enrollment is bigger than Alter's... Can't help you draw from every failing/non failing district south of Kettering. Oakwood, any DPS, Trotwood, Vandalia, Huber Heights, Stebbins, etc

Alter game score misleading, down by 2 in fourth Q with 3:00 minutes left with 2 chances to tie. It was fiercely contested game. PM very impressive, believe they will get to state with good chance to win it all. PM coach is in your face to all of his players, but they are very well coached. They must be used to his yelling. Good luck Cavaliers.

Ask CJ, they want to be in D2. I’m pretty sure recently in an interview Staley said it was nice going to state in 15 but they want to be in D2.

“I like being in Division II,” said Staley following Sunday’s 63-58 defeat of rival Alter at Centerville. “Those two years we were in Division III, it just didn’t feel right. Our kids felt that way, too.”

I wonder what Staley meant by this? They didn't exactly dominate the Division III level. Perhaps he meant that since Chaminade Julienne has historically not done well in the post-season, it simply felt weird not doing well in a smaller division?
