Devonta Freeman, Falcons Agree to Richest Contract for an RB in NFL

This shows the difference in wealth of players in the NFL versus the NBA and MLB...

Quote:
The Atlanta Falcons and Devonta Freeman agreed to a five-year contract extension Wednesday that will make him the league's highest-paid running back, as first reported by NFL.com's Michael Silver.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the deal is worth 5 years/$41.25 million.

Well one sport is incredibly violent, the other two are not.

There's 53 players on a football team, there's 12 on an NBA team. Not that hard to figure out.

Where NFL players get screwed is on contracts not being guaranteed. If there is any sport where players should demand guaranteed contracts, it's football.

For instance, this Freeman contract is for $41 mil, but only half of that is guaranteed. The history of RB's tells us he'll go downhill pretty quickly and likely won't make it through the length of this contract.

Or you give more money to the guys who will likely get more out of? High ankle sprain sprain takes on average 6 weeks to heal. That's 35% of the NFL season. That's only 24% of the NBA season. Not to mention Neo's point of # of players.

For me, a fan ... I think the NFL has the best system. Players have to earn their pay ... they can't just hit the lottery and stop trying or be a pain to management. How many times do you here about an NFL team trying to get rid of a "bad contract" player ... it happens all the time in the NBA & MLB.

Second, most NFL contract are front end loaded, with the players getting most (a lot) at the beginning ... NFL contract are really no different, except the team has the option rather than the player ... NBA players sign a 4 year contracts with a player option after 3 years ... thus the contract is not really completely guarenteed ... just it the players' choice. Once again, as a fan, I like the NFL model better, players must earn their pay.

Seems like the RB position is back in vogue. I'm not sold on the overall importance given how short the career span is for 90% of guys at the position. In order to have any kind of longevity, you need to be able to catch the ball out of the backfield. Getting hit on most plays is almost like getting in a mini car wreck.
