No team this season?

Anyone know of any team(s) folding their 2017 season due to lack of players?

Portsmouth Norte Dame is down to 16 the last I read on Southeastpreps. Was talk of only playing JV, but they are going to try to keep varsity.

16 is enough to play a game, not sure about a season. They need to scour the halls once school starts to bring in reinforcements.

A month or two ago, I was reading the Mr. Thrifty and saw an add in the classifieds for the Sebring head coach position. I have never seen that before.

Dayton Daily News had an article saying that Springfield Catholic Central has 18 players and 4 of them aren't Varsity ready. http://www.mydaytondailynews.com/spo...2t08XMVWfHcpI/

It's time for football with a reduced number of players in a Ohio. In theory, 16-18 players should be enough to play a game or season, but what if the majority of players weigh under 150 pounds? Some modified versions only call for three lineman, so you wouldn't have to search the hallways and guilt a big kid into playing. The inverse could also be true. One of my friends went to coach a JV game with fifteen kids, few of which would have played a skill position with a larger roster.

I don't mean to ruffle some feathers but if you can't have 11 vs 11 in practice, idk how you can play a season. That's where I think 8 man would come in handy.

EagleFan, I know what I stated was painfully obvious to many, which was my intent. Someone responded to a similar thread last year by saying,
"football is 11 o 11.....anything else is dumb.....if you don't have enough kids, that's too bad.....too many dems on here wanting a level playing field.....might makes right.....always has.....either play football the right way or go play soccer......this is why America has been so screwed over the past decade....too many people putting up with mediocrity.....sack up and play football the way it was meant to be played."
I know most people have enough common sense to know this is an ignorant line of thinking. I was just firing the first shot before anyone started to veer down the path eleven man is the only real football, which is absolute garbage. I wish some of these kids with programs shuttering or fielding less than x number of kids had an avenue to play competitive football.

Yes, because sports participation should be the top determinant of whether a school system should remain independent or merge.

Could merge the teams without merging schools. It's been done before.

Good idea, any current examples of this?

Pennsylvania and many other states form co-ops. Extremely common outside Ohio.

Iowa allows such consolidations for sports. They usually run for two years and must be approved by the school districts involved.

Kinda happens in multi-school districts in Ohio.

No co-ops like in PA/MI other states. Yet.

Youngstown for the past few years has had multiple high schools but was only fielding one football team.

One local school that didn't have hockey had two kids playing hockey for two other schools.

The way it was explained was that if your school didn't have a sport, they were eligible to play for another local school. Might be an option for some of these barely big enough schools if true.

With all due respect, I don't believe you should be playing with 16 kids on a roster. When you get down to those low numbers, you are starting freshmen against another team's juniors and seniors. You are talking about starting a 14-15 year old cornerback against an 18-year old senior running back. On a sweep play this becomes a very unsafe situation and could easily result in serious injury.

To avoid situations like this, a team should have at least 22 players who are varsity ready in order to participate in a game. Let the head coach determine who is varsity ready, not a group of dads with huge egos who want their sons to start a game.

Also, what kind of player do you believe you are going to get by scouring the halls once school starts? Probably not very dedicated ones.

It's not a big deal as long as you're playing other teams in the same boat. The problem lies when you play a team in your scenario. But you can't go around worrying about you will and will not get injured. There will always be some physical mismatches on the field.

I agree on your take of asking kids to play roaming the halls. But those coaches with 16 kids are desperate. And desperate times call for desparate measures

The kids are allowed to play for other schools but the teams they play on then become club teams and are ineligible for the playoffs and they are no longer an OHSAA recognized team.
This was the situation when Poland, Mooney, Ursuline, Boardman and Austintown Fitch pretty much combined to form one team, mind you they don't have a team anymore. Canfield was the only actual non-club team and they remain as the only team of any sort in the greater Youngstown area but that is contingent on the Ice Zone staying open.
