Should the Redskins pay Cousins?

Should have the Redskins offered Cousins the highest salary ever for a QB?

I am torn, on one hand, he is a good QB and good QBs are hard to find ... Who are they going to replace him with ... Colt McCoy ... Johnnie Manziel?

On the other hand, I also have seen what happens when you give good QBs (not elite) really high salaries ... Joe Flacco and Jay Cutler come to mind ... their teams suffered because of their high pay.

So if you were the Redskins ... would you have offered him a max type salary?

I would have tried to sign him years ago to a long term deal that was t astronomical like they have been paying him under these franchise tags. Now they are backed into a corner and either will have to overpay or lose a good qb

Yeah, Snyder really tries his best to be one of the three worst owners in major pro sports. This is just another feather in his cap.

I'm more curious about where he'll play next season. Pundits throw out the 49ers, but why would he go to team that's just begun its rebuild? The Redskins have handled this situation terribly, but Cousins would be a complete dumbazz to go to a bad team at 30 years old. So, why not sign with a team that could use the upgrade at QB, like Houston, Denver, or Jacksonville? If Roethlisberger retires, would Pittsburgh be in the running?

Would these teams have the cap space to sign him?

It is always easy to blame ownership but..............................

Cousins turned down a guaranteed 53 million dollars and one of the biggest contracts per season......

Who knows? If a team wants a player badly enough, they can make it happen.

I will say this: if Roethlisberger retires after this season, Cousins would have to be on Pittsburgh's radar.

Should have signed him a couple years ago.

Now, I say no. It will hinder your ability to get other impact players. The downside of not paying him is you may be forced to find good QB play and with the quality of QB's in today's NFL, good luck.

But that is the problem ... getting rid of good players to sign a good to average QB ... the elite QBs can make up for the loss In talent ... the middle of the road QB can't ... so is Cousins good enough to make the difference? I am not sure.

The only QB who can take a scrap heap team to the Super Bowl is Tom Brady. Cousins is obviously not THAT good, but he is more than capable of leading a team to a SB, and is worth letting a good player go to acquire given the team is a QB away from competing (like Denver, Houston, Jacksonville, and potentially Pittsburgh).

I think I disagree ... I just look at what the Ravens & Saints have been since the signed Flacco and Brees to big contracts and had to let other players walk ... both were double digit winners before and .500 or worse since. I just think some of these guys would be better taking a little less and keeping better teammates ... much like Brady does.

^ Drew Brees has the 11th highest cap hit for QBs this year.

How it is the fault of the QB if their team fails to draft well consistently?

That is this year, ... it was much higher when he first signed ... they did shed several good players right after signing him ... and he was much better QB than Cousins.

... and that is the year they didn't sign several of their FAs and traded Jimmy Graham .

Maybe teams shouldn't offer that much money.
